IGN: Nintendo a Niche Player? Sony Stabs MS in Article!

If XB360 still looks good, the format of it's media won't matter one jot. The only one-upmanship Sony can pull is to have PS3 playing HD movies, so people wanting an HD all-in-one solution will eye PS3 as a top contender. Plus image quality surely won't be an issue with PS3 as PS2's DVD playback quality was (though I see nothing to complain about PS2's quality lots of others have said it's playback was/is bad) as with that much media-processing juice Sony can apply whatever cleanup operations they want to the image data. That'll make PS3 a first class console+first calss HD movie player and an economical purchase assuming a sensible price.

Heh, the PS2 could be a much much bettter DVD player "with all that multimedia processing juice" it has. ;)
Later versions of the console featured pro-scan DVD playback, but really, while playing DVDs on my PS2 i've always thought how totally unused the rather powerful hardware (everything considered) was.

Does anyone know, more or less, what kind of processing power these new "1080i converter DVD players" require? Would it be totally out of the question to try that out on PS2 or Xbox?
(to anyone who doesn't know, there are a few DVD players that basically process the DVD images and output at 1080i, with rather decent results, considering the source is a measly 480i/p image)

Well modified Xbox can scale to 720p.

Oh right, i never heard that. I'm guessing a chipped xbox (to make it play dvds at higher resolutions) is cheaper than a dvd converter...?

My XBox outputs all media at 1080i. *hugs xbox*

I can't wait till everything is 720p or 1080i.. I played a pre-release Xbox game a few weeks ago at 1080i on my TV (it's going to be disabled for the final release) and bloody hell the difference was AMAZING, it looked sooo much better. Shame about the framerate though ;)

XBMC handles upscaling media fine, but apparently it can struggle on media that actually is encoded at 720p.

Why is it going to be disabled?.

Probably because of this:
