By the way, at least one guy cracked the HDD encryption on his PS3. This should at least pave the way for backups//restores, if he releases the tool used.

Got to the true root of the "80010038" errors I was hitting trying to back up my HDD. It was hardware. The original HDD developed unrecoverable bad blocks, and the new HDD came with a bad read element. Replaced the HDD with another one and haven't had any problems after several 80+ GB back ups. The PS3 firmware isn't actually as shoddy as I had thought it was. (But it should still give you an idea of where it's failing if it hits a snag during backup.)
