Why do I get the feeling there still will be long queues for PS2 at launch no matter whatever is the launch price and all those who are asking for $299 gaming console only will be among the first in the queue

As for a gaming only device thats very much out of the question specially because MS is in the race and the battle is for our living room and those massive 20-something market who are still stuck in Dorm rooms, tiny appartments, etc.

I remember last time PS2 was launched there were rumours of Iraq buying a lots of PS2 for weapons simulations ....just wondering if the Arms inspector/ US team found those . So the nuclear simulator is out of question but you can obviously expose that functionality by using the mod chip for PS3.

Sorry to play spoiler, but that was what Sony said for the PS2 and afaik, they are late on the schedule. We shall see whether they can finally deliver their set-top box <-> broadband lifestyle ideals, this time round.

I mean, apart from netsurfing, you can do most of that on a modded Xbox!

You do pay extra for modding. And whatever you are talking about a modded xbox, most of that can be done with a modded PS2 too.
So I dont get your point ... is your point that modding on xbox is free ? or you just have to say something negative about PS2 or anything from sony ...I can understand that compulsion.
Also I dont think either Sony or MS is going to allow you to play MP3/Divx just out of the box.
When most people talk about a set top multimedia box it sort of means ability to
1 ) Play games
2 ) Capabilities like Tivo
3 ) Capability to d/l and play media files once you pay the service provider ( btw both Sony & MS can build that kind of network )
any more capabilities probably but I cant think of them right now
