Hello, new SCE related PR... yes YOU are called in too :P

Sony seeks wider reach for game ICs

Tokyo — Sony Corp. is drastically revamping its semiconductor strategy: It will combine the chip operations of its headquarters with those of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., then take the devices developed by the latter unit for the company's popular Playstation 2 game console and steer them toward a wide range of consumer electronics applications.

The company said it will also develop applications for the Cell processor that Sony is jointly developing with IBM Corp. and Toshiba Corp.

In charge of the overhaul is Ken Kutaragi, president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, who was recently named executive deputy vice president of Sony's main office overseeing the Broadband Network Co. (BBNC), an internal company. The broadband operation will play a key role as incubator for next-generation products based on Sony semiconductors, such as TVs, servers and consumer products.

“We will create as many applications as possible for leading-edge semiconductors,†Kutaragi told EE Times this week. “Our foundation will be the semiconductor business, which will foster new applications for volume platforms like Playstation 2. We need volume.â€

The semiconductor operations of Sony Computer Entertainment had been relatively independent from the corporate parent's semiconductor business. The first-generation Playstation used ASICs supplied by LSI Logic Corp., for example. Sony Computer Entertainment built the core engines of Playstation 2—the Emotion Engine processor and high-end Graphics Synthesizer—at a fab jointly owned with Toshiba and its own Nagasaki fabs, respectively.

All that is about to change. Sony and Sony Computer Entertainment have announced plans to invest ¥200 billion ($1.7 billion) to develop 65-nanometer process technology and construct a 300-mm wafer fabrication facility. The companies simultaneously announced they have integrated the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer into a single chip with 53.5 million transistors built in a 90-nm process. The product, which Sony calls EE+GS@90nm, is set to begin volume production.

Under Kutaragi's plan, the EE+GS@ 90nm will first be used in other Sony consumer products, and then introduced on the merchant market. The first nongame applications will emerge three years after the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer first appeared in the Playstation 2. The Cell processor, however, will be available for wider use in other applications from the start, even as it serves as the core engine for Sony's next-generation gaming system, often called Playstation 3. Within about a month, Sony says it will announce a new application that BBNC has developed for the EE+GS@90nm.

Satoru Rick Oyama, senior vice president of Lehman Brothers Japan, applauded the push to find new appli- cations for the game console chips. “If the devices are used only in the closed Playstation world, the technology would not evolve,†he said.

The yield rate of Sony's semiconductor production will be hard to match, bolstered by the EE+GS@90nm's high-volume production for the Playstation 2, Kutaragi said. “This highly efficient technology is waiting for immediate use,†he said. “The next-generation Playstation will probably take the form of a game box, though it will not be a mere game machine.â€

“I am very much interested in how Sony will promote PS3 as a new product for the home, because it will not be a simple game machine,†said Lehman Brothers analyst Oyama.

IMO that is the most interesting part of the whole thing.

As well as even MORE proof that Cell will be used in PS3 8)

I dont think average gamer wants anything but a game console....that said I wouldnt mind anything extra provided the price is $299....I as a gamer do not care about add functionalities like PVR etc...

I would not mind at all a more than game console PlayStation 3 as this is what I wanted ( PlayStation 2 was a good first step in that direction :) ) :D

provided it is priced at $299....am I right??

if they price it at $299....I would not mind if they provide a nuclear simulator....good for satisfying your nuclear ambitions

btw gaming factor should not be lost in a bid to add extra functionalities....ultimately it is a game console!!!

Why Sony always has these big dreams for having a game console do all this stuff is unclear to me.

I say they should just release a seperate box that does all this stuff, and make ps3 a standard gaming console. Although, just like ps2 I have a feeling all these dreams of theirs will turn into BS. The whole "playstation network" anyway.

I think they should just focus on offline and online gaming and only gaming related functionalities....nothing more! for other purposes we alraedy have dedicated machines!

I think you underestimate the massive 20-something market who are still stuck in Dorm rooms, tiny appartments, etc. who absolutely lap up the multi-purpose functionality that the XB and PS2 provide. Plus, it adds serious value in the eyes of purchasing-parents..

Finally, its called broadening ones market appeal :) #1 way to expand your business..

I agree :)

Maybe they can release a gaming version of ps3 for 300, and then a multi purpose one for around 500?

That would seem logical, instead of maybe shoving options on you that you won't use, like the firewire port on the PS2.

You really think that if Sony took all the frills out of the PS3 that they STILL wouldn't charge you $299 for it at launch? ;)

Personally, I'll take the swissarmy-station 3 and the obligatory $299 price tag thank you!

No no ;)

300 just for the gaming console, 400+ for the total package.

I think you read my reply wrong.. what I was trying to say was that Sony will charge you $299 USD [market demanded price] at launch for their console, whether it be uber-multi-media-centre, or just a games machine. That said, wouldn't you take the frills if they came for free ?

Of course I would take the frills if they came for free :)

However, maybe they could make a enhanced version of PS3, with video editing, all that type of stuff for 400 or so.

PS3 with Solar power, wind energy, build-in nuclear warhead codes would be surprising :p

bbot... of course we are all lying and you are going to soon present all the unsormontable evidence that lies behind the fact Cell won't be used in PlayStation 3 ;)

Oh and bbot, the Designchain article is moot now, it turned out to be BS. So go ahead, let's see the evidence! Despite SCEI and Sony confirming Cell to be in ps3.

Has anyone (in the financial world) done projections on the profit margin increases when Sony shfts to 100% internally developed and produced ICs?

Why? Most of the "other aspects" of the PS3 will not be due to inclusion of supplimental equiptement that serves ancillary purposes. Most of this will be done with Cell, Broadband, and BlueRay or HDD.

I guess you have a point, most of the hardware will have to be included anyway.

But maybe they could add a few things? Or include some features that a regular ps3 cannot do, that was what I was thinking.
