HBO producing A Song of Ice and Fire

And I don't have a clue what people find so great about them. (well at least the first one, because that's as far as I'll ever get)

It's just really well written, and the characters are deep and complex. It's fantasy and yet it has a feeling of authenticity, you find yourself thinking that these are truly human beings. Or it's like anime, haggis, and anal sex; to each his own.

It's fantasy, but magic is extremely sparse, there are no elves or dwarves or hobbits running about, and it's so heavily influenced by GRRM's love of medieval history and glee of trampling on genre formula that elevates the tone of the series. I don't think GRRM's actual prose is anything fantastic, but his characterizations and dialogue are definitely quite a bit better than your typical genre writer.

Well, I've avoided the 15 min thing as I want it all relatively fresh when it finally airs. However, they've started showing TV adverts for it and...

Umm, damn, I can't stop thinking of the actor, Sean Bean, as Boromir even when seeing him in the advert for this series. Hopefully, the show will be engrossing enough that Boromir will stop popping into my head everytime I see him on the screen. It doesn't help that his hair and look are quite similar to how he was portrayed as Boromir.

Still the TV adverts have me excited about this.

Regards,
SB

Sean Bean for me is Alec Trevelyan, so I am expecting Pierce Brosnan to be betrayed at some point in A Game of Thrones. :D

Amazing! i loved it. Better production value than most big budget series also.

HBO is just awesome. Now I have this show, Curb your enthusiasm and Life & Times of Tim all on one channel.

I wonder who Catelyn's father will be on the show. I also wonder how/if they're going to make Jaime's character at all sympathetic.

I loved the visuals of Ned sitting by the weirwood and Catelyn approaching him with the news of Jon's death.

Didn't care for some of the prologue changes though. The Others came off as sprinting zombies (at least according to my wife, sword-wielding zombies who like to decapitate), rather than the graceful and mocking creatures as depicted in the book. Catelyn and Cersei are both poorly cast, but nothing I can't live with. Sean Bean is quite good as Ned.

Do you guys mean they aren't good actresses, or they aren't good matches for their characters in the book? I thought the acting was great all around.

I think the actress playing Catelyn looks old enough to be Ned's auntie. And I've never cared for the actress playing Cersei, not much talent there IMO.

Be interesting to see who they cast as Melisandre now that the 2nd season has been announced. Dare I hope for Christina Hendricks?

I think the production values are amazing. Tyrion is great and Ned is superb too. The kids are all doing fantastic jobs, Arya is just as I imagined her.

I also found the theme song to be very engaging. King Robert was much better than I imagined and Prince Joffrey is just as slimy as I imagined. I also can't wait until Viserys, uhm, well, I won't spoil it for people who haven't read the books.

I am not unhappy about it, though I kinda agree with John Reynolds about the walkers. Anyway, this is the best fantasy ever made for TV and the story is just starting. :)

They are a bit older than expected. Cersei is handsome not "beautiful" and its really annoying to see how obviously her hair is coloured. They could just make it look as natural :( As actresses they did really well.

I proclaim Game of Thrones the first fantasy TV series that is not cheesy.

Watched the last two episodes back to back without knowing anything about the books beyond that they involve fantasy and now I'm totally hooked. Would it be best to read the books before or after the first season? The pacing of the show is absolutely perfect but I just don't want to miss out on any major plot details.

I don't know, at this point you might as well watch the show before reading the book. You'll have a year to read books 2-5 before the 2nd season starts.
