Halo: Reach

I agree the water looks worse than Halo 3. The water in Halo 3 imo was the best this gen though. That one sunny beach level (dont even know the name) seriously reminded me of a Heineken commercial so much. It was just sublime water. I dont know if the water was "downgraded" technically, or just artistically changed for the worse though.

But I think the rest of the game looks good.

I was looking at an IGN article today on "the history of Halo leaks" and they show, while 2 leaked about a month before, according to them Halo 3 didn't leak until less than a week prior to release. I personally dont really recall from back then. However, if posting the game for reviewer download cost MS possibly 2 weeks of extra leak time, that's pretty boneheaded. Because the last weeks of wait are made a whole lot worse when there's so many leaks and spoilers around.

Kotaku: A Day With The Finished Halo Reach

Stephen Totilo describes a couple of campaign missions. 'Tip of the Spear' sounds magnificent.

The second mission I played, Tip of the Spear, was the grandest level of a Halo game I've ever played. We were out on rocky hills, dozens of Warthogs racing toward dozens of Covenant. Past an intro cutscene and into the playable action, my Noble 6 was in the thick of a firefight against a rush of Covenant troops. I looked toward the sky and counted at least 30 vehicles in combat in the air, UNSC craft vs. Covenant ships big and small. In the distance I saw rows of tanks against huge Covenant walkers. For part of this mission you're driving a Warthog that is armed with some very powerful rockets. You're dealing with massive enemy Wraith tanks and the new Halo Reach enemy vehicle, the Revenant, which is tank in its own right, bigger than a Ghost and smaller than a Wraith (it's in the bottom image of this post). In this mission a Halo game finally feels again like one did when you first hit land in the original Halo: it feels not like a battle but like a war.

I believe that level is called the Covenant, one of the best levels in Halo 3 IMO.

As for the water looking worse, I think that may just be an artistic aspect. The settings seen in Halo 3 may have allowed for more attractive looking water between the lighting and settings of the environments (much like how you described the beach). Compare this to the darker and more dreary tone of what we've seen of Reach so far and it's no surprise that some may find the water in Halo 3 more attractive. Unless I'm mistaken, Bungie said the water in Reach now uses tessellation, so it couldn't be a technical downgrade.

Is it just me or does this guy suck as a writer?

Anyways, this part has me most excited:

You may sometimes fight like a solo warrior in the Halo Reach missions I played, but the game is constantly showing you that you're not alone. That's a distinction for Reach, which approaches the scale of the real-time strategy game Halo Wars in providing the sensation that there is a lot of action happening all around, lots of fighting forces on all sides (Plus animals! The Reach version of the ostrich is too stupid to flee a firefight.)

Halo has always been about large scale battles and wars, but hasn't always conveyed it well IMO. Glad to read that it's being presented better in Reach.

Can those of you who are playing the pirated version kindly STFU? The more you babble about shit the more you leak story stuff. Just keep it to yourself for the next few weeks so you don't spoil it for people who have integrity.

If I were a mod, I'd ban eveyone who talks about playing pirated games until after the release date. A zero tolerance policy is appropriate IMO.

Completely agree with this!!

I don't think anyone here spoiled anything related to story.

Well, firstly there's always the concern that a major spoiler may be revealed by someome in this thread, 3 weeks before the release of the game. Personally I'm far from a Halo fan, but even I'm getting intrigued enough to pop in this thread every so often to see what pre-release buzz is being discussed.

Secondly, there are plenty of other forums out there where scummy cunt pirates can discuss the pirated games they have played before the official release date. I'd have thought Beyond3D is not a site that needs that kind of poster.

Lastly, there are a number of people on this forum who earn their living in software development in various forms, and it's just plain disrespectful to those members to discuss, and even advocate, ways in which their ability to earn a wage is diminished. The facile argument of, "Well, I can pirate it because I'll buy it anyway" has the same ring of truth as, "I'm not homophobic because I know a gay person."

That's how I see it anyway.

Completely agree with this!!

Asking for a ban is completely ridiculous, last time I checked this isn't the Bungie forums.

If you're really that sensitive to spoilers, it's simple - don't read the thread.

I have been a fan of the series since Halo 1 and aren't that concerned - I mean we already know that on Reach everyone dies in the end, so what's there to spoil?

And really, the people who download leaks whether it be music or games are most likely the hardcore fans who will buy limited editions and boxed sets anyway.

It's not like Bungie employees will be out of work come Christmas time due to the leak, so can we please dispense with the overzealous righteousness.

By the look of things I probably have a week before I decide to quit visiting this thread. I already read a minor spoiler by "i nerini del buio". So personally I'd like to see a mod make an official stance either way so I can decide if I should quit visiting & turn off my subscription to the thread.

The VGA trailer for one, compare the material shaders on the Spartan armor in the VGA trailer to the leaked playthroughs and you can see that they have been pared back somewhat and don't look as shiny and metallic as they did before.
I don't think they were supposed to be shiny and metallic in the first place. Shiny combat armour is asking for trouble. There are a few missing shadows and blurrier textures next to the VGA trailer though, if we're being picky.

I think they were, it definitely looked better than in the final version - when the VGA trailer came out there was quite a lot of praise for the quality of the armor shaders.

And let us not forget that Halo is a series where you have guns that fire pink needles and jump off spaceships!

Come to think of it, they did the same thing to the 'Chief's armor in Halo 3, At the E3 2006 trailer it had an amazing tan, hammered finish only to be replaced with totally drab olive green armor.

Apparently some of the wildlife in Reach can fight with the Covenant

Completely disagree with this.

If I cannot read a thread because of being afraid getting a major spoiler...and your only suggestion is to not read the thread and this potentially happening weeks before the game officially releases...
I wonder what else I am supposed to read on this forum? Only games that I have already completed myself or games I do not care at all?!

I like this forum because I have the impression that people here are very sensitive with respect to potential spoiler and handle this well. Keep in mind that I not only care for story spoilers, but I am also curious to find out myself which settings/boss types/enemy types/weapons and other crazy stuff the devs came up with...often, this gets easily spoiled.

PS: I don't think that people here in this thread already spoiled stuff, I just thought that it was a good idea by NRP to kindly remember all of being sensitive!

Well, I suppose they could always use the Spoiler tags to hide spoilers - then there'll be no reason not to visit the thread or to call for bans for people who play it early.

...so what's there to spoil?

Maybe you didn't see my post 3 above yours, where I said I'm not much of a Halo fan but am starting to look forward to this game.

Oh, and I didn't know that.... not at all. So I'm now trying to decide if you were making a joke about how it ends, or if you're a cock.

Well if you didn't know that, you clearly haven't been following Reach as from the very start they've been talking about "you know how it ends" and how it is dark story about 'sacrifice'.

Plus from Halo 1 we've known that Masterchief is the last Spartan.
So it's kind of like asking what happens at the end of Titanic.

What happens in between will be interesting though.

I have to agree with those who vote no spoilers until the release, especially from people playing pirated copies...
