General Next Generation Rumors and Discussions [Post GDC 2020]

True. But if they come up with an idea for a lucrative gameplay mechanic, it's probably best that they don't ask Epic for any technical help implementing it...

Guerilla Games were making buggy and shitty games in general.
Naughty Dog was producing horrendous games on 3D0.
Now they are some of the best companies in the world. We can hope :p

The moment any gameplay is released, people will copy it (if its successful).

Agreed. I thought things were a little different with PUBG and Fortnite though? I was under the impression that PUBG was ahead but every time they went to make some additions or refinements, Epic went "that sounds like a great idea, thanks!"

1000 players is gonna be painful. Super large landscapes... painful.

Overall, super excited if they pull it off.

I can't see it making any difference unless everyone can land in the same place. It's population density that affects game intensity and pacing. Game size affects duration - bigger maps means more traversal and longer matches.

It's another take on games I guess. Each experience will be different from the last. This is sort of why I enjoy playing Battle Royale, as much as I also enjoy arena. The issue with arena, is that it's symmetrical, ti's just respawn and kill and die. That's fun or a while, but as you get better at it, and the teams do, there begins a funneling, the strategies for the map are clear, it can get locked. Some people love the sweats like that, but most people don't.
Battle Royale isn't fair at all, in that sense, but it provides a unique experience each game. The more players, the larger the map, the different the experience.

I don't know if this is a battle royale game though.

Industry Benchmark Graphics for Horizon sequel on PS5
From the official Guerrilla job listing.

"RespawnFirst founder and lead editor Sikandar Mahmood discovered a job listing on the official Guerilla Games website that gives us a few minor but interesting details about the sequel to Sony’s 2017 hit PS4 exclusive game. Horizon Zero Dawn 2 will feature “stunning environments,” “lush and stunning vegetation,” and “industry-benchmark graphics.” What’s interesting is that they are not calling it Horizon Zero Dawn 2, at least not in the job listing. In the listing, the game is only referred to as “Horizon.” Last but not the least, Horizon is created on an improved version of the Decima Engine."
And with every inch of my heart I believe them it will :). Maybe we'll see the foliage quality from Book of the Dead or even better but in a massive open world game with no load time.
If PS4 Pro could run this in 4k then PS5 should cut through this like butter.

As expected 10000%. Here we are trying to find differences between current gen and next gen graphics, as they’re not always immediately obvious from a few trailers, and people are still arguing that the difference between X and 5 will be ‘massive’. Sigh.

This is why I think the SSDs are so important this coming 9th generation. Right up to 7th generation (PS3) a new generation of consoles delivered a revolutionary leap in visuals noticeable to any gamer, even those not caring about graphics. GTA San Andreas to GTA IV is a massive leap. But the leap from 7th to 8th generation only saw an evolution in graphics. Obviously, everything was better, higher resolutions, more detailed textures and models, more items on screen. But this is what we face again because we're not seeing a 20-100x increase in graphical power over previous gen that we used to see.

I genuinely believe that PS5 and Series X would be a tremendously hard sell if the consoles were not doing something revolutionary as almost eliminating load times. That itself is borderline magical and will make a bigger difference to many games than 2x increase in the resolution of the shadow of that bird over there.

I think it’s the total package of it, just the ssd alone wouldn’t be enough, you need a powerfull gpu, cpu and fast ram to leverage what resides on the ssd also (to bottleneck it less).

It’s the sum of all, things like vrs, ML/reconstruction tech might allow for better performance, giving us that 60fps many want so badly.
Ray tracing can add some intresting things (see MC rt, ppl love it).

The 3d/ray traced audio hardware in xsx/ps5 is one nice addition, though i think graphics/load times etc is what people get more excited about. A e3 demo with ultra nice sound or graphics, most would prioritize gfx i think :p

The big jump from last gen to this gen wasn’t resolution so much; as it was the introduction of PBR pipeline. Combined with higher resolution and people were satisfied.

this coming next gen; without ray tracing we’re not going to build a lot of distance from this gen. Perhaps that builds a very strong argument for compute shaders being as flexible as they are. 4K is already there with midgen, leaving 60fps as being the largest delimiter. And anything in the 1080p range without ray tracing is tactfully the same as this gen; with respect to graphics.
Audio is going to be the hardest challenge to market; not going to happen in a sizzle reel.

SSD performance hard to market; hard to showcase in a sizzle reel as well.

this is where MS fell flat; the best things about next gen people couldn’t put their finger on.

This happened last gen as well; some people couldn’t see a big difference at launch, we are in for a repeat for a couple years.

Yes we wont be having ps1 to ps2 jumps anymore, i remember gran turismo 2 to 3 being the jump defining ps1 to ps2. Same for mgs1 to mgs2, that 2001 e3 demo had ppl wondering if it was real. Or going from 2d to 3d.

Jumps like that have not happened since then and wont happen coming gen either.
Maybe VR is that jump, see the new HL, its not the gfx or speed improvements, but how we play thats the differenator.

That's granted, and they both have it all. The point is what will make people really feel that is a big enough step up to convince them buying in to the new generation. I also think the SSD is the biggest "game changer" here. For me 3D audio is important, but I think that will be for a niche market. Good surround on stereo headphones/headsets might help to lift that market some. Most will keep using TV speakers and sound bars.

Yes, a machine should be balanced as much as possible, delivering equally well across the board.
SSD is needed, so are the other components. All are game changers, a current gen console with next gen ssd speeds wouldnt be staggering.
Theres a reason for the 2080 level gpus, fast cpus and gddr6 ram, ray tracing and other advanced tech in there.

Not many would favor the ssd over a gimped gpu or the other way around.
Even in the current state, a real jump isnt going to happen anymore, all the hw in then consoles is the least we want.

I see why VR is getting bigger, its the real differinator to how we play today. I hate it, but thats another thing.

True for the audio, basically no one cares, the reason 3d/htrf audio died off. But ms and sony stuffed 3d audio hw in there anyway, which cant hurt to say the least.

And yes both consoles have it all ✌️

VR was the wow factor for me this gen. But it does not have to replace tradidionnal gaming, i like both, and still want "flat" gaming.
BUT, there are genres, like horror (RE7 etc..) and racing, that i really don't like to play anymore on a TV, and yet i have the low end of VR with PSVR and Quest, but that's still amazing.
