Gears of War 4 [XO, XPA]

So far I'm not loving it, 15 minutes in.

The controls feel clunky as hell. After being super used to Destiny controls. It's tempting to think it's just a matter of getting used to, but I'm not so sure. I think the controls may just be plain archaic.

The grenade system was always among the worst and clunkiest in any game. Making it a real chore to use a fundamental system. No change there.

You move incredibly slow, and you have to clumsily press a button and the stick to run.

It's weird (clunky) to reload on RB. I cant shoot anything, feels like I have a pea shooter that requires needle precision with that Markza or whatever. Like Halo 5, you literally dont seem to be able to die, the AI so far always revives you. The strikes keep mounting.

The gameplay has consisted of, well now you get female generals screaming at you instead of males because, SJW, because, America. But you get screamed at constantly to do this, do that, whatever the game wants you to do. I get that all games do this to an extent, but in some it's handled well. In this one, not. There's only the way the game DEMANDS you handle any situation. SHOOT THEM WITH THE HAMMER. GET ON THAT TURRET. THROW A FRAG IN THERE. HERES THE OBVIOUS PLACE HERE WE TEACH MORONS AND 6 YEAR OLDS THAT YOU HAVE FRAG GRENADES, NO YOU CANNOT HANDLE THIS ANY OTHER WAY. So contrived.

Thematically, the game is clearly trying to start you off at 11. Any good game is paced and BUILDS. Gears 2 made that mistake, "we're going to try to throw 10,000 things at you and see if it makes a good game". Another strike, so far. So far, very little interactivity, it's just a glorified rails light show. The environments seem more constricted and smaller. A tradeoff for all those pretty visuals?

All that said, hey, it's 15 minutes. While there are lots of early missteps, my opinion will evolve, and I hope positively. It looks really nice also. If they are doing this on 1.3 teraflops it boggles to think what 4-6 can do someday.

Personal taste. I really like the grenade system in gears. You have your choice of a quick but potentially inaccurate toss or a riskier but well aimed toss.

You move incredibly slow, and you have to clumsily press a button and the stick to run.

That's deliberate to make it an actual choice when you want to sprint, rather than sprinting just being the normal movement speed that all users use. Or to use a rather arbitrary sprint stamina bar. The regular movement is still faster than regular walking. Gears while mostly a fantastical spectacle type of cover shooter still tries to ground certain things in reality to make combat feel more weighty with consequences to free movement versus taking cover. Movement is one of those things, hence limiting default movement speed to something more realistic than the vast majority of shooters (like Destiny which went for highly unrealistic movement, which is needed for what is basically a slower paced run and gun shooter).

15 minutes? It's quite obviously much of that is the tutorial for the game. Almost all modern games these days uses the first level or two or three as a tutorial to gradually teach the player the mechanics of the game rather than using a printed manual. Just be glad the tutorial doesn't comprise the first 2 hours of the game like some recent Final Fantasy games. :p

The Gears style of gameplay is either a love it or hate it thing. Some people just don't like it no matter what.

Watched some streams of Horde mode and it looks fantastic. Haven't watched any campaign streams yet as I don't want to spoil anything for myself. Just waiting until I get a chance to play it later today.

Finished Chapter 1 co-op last night/this morning. Only complaint is hold X to pick up ammo where previous Gears it was just press X.

I really liked the opening as it kicks it off intensely. It helps that I just finished off Gears Ultimate edition just an hour before starting Gears 4--very big visual jump even compared to a remaster less than a year old. Controls, other than X, is about the same as the original although I noticed that the Roadie Run seems to be smoother than Gears UD.

Loving it so far and can't wait to get some Horde goodness.

Same here for Horde. Going to have to see about getting into the B3D group for this. Hopefully it has crossplay between XBO and PC since I don't plan on playing it on XBO.

iroboto and I were able to crossplay Campaign and Horde mode. I don't think versus is though, but I could be wrong since we never tried it.

Edit: I think only ranked is not cross-play as iroboto was able to set-up a custom/social match with 2 of us on X1 and him on PC. We didn't actually play because there was only 3 of us and we couldn't figure out a Free for All mode. It's something I hope they can patch in.

Cool, just need to hookup with B3Ders now.

What do you guys think about it?
Based on what I have seen so far it is more of the same. The gameplay hasnt evolved much from the previous Gears?
The reviews although reach a good average on metacritic they arent as strong as I thought would be.
Based on my experience with the first 4 Gears, its like the franchise have reached a point of saturation. The sequels were following a very strict formula and the devs werent pushing the envelope in terms of gameplay and how technology could be used creatively to add some variety to the gameplay.
Is it the same case with this one?

I'm really digging it so far. It's more of the same with more stuff.

The wind for instance isn't there just for show. The wind actually affects your movement and non-hitscan weapon projectiles. Grenades, arrows, etc. I'm now going to hate, or at least be really annoyed with, any game where the wind is there just for looks. Gears shows how it should be done with regards to wind.

There is also a greater variety of weapons (I didn't play Gears Judgement so don't know how it compares to that) with subtle but significant differences. The robot sniper rifle, for example, requires not only good aim but timing as well since you have to charge it, and it fires as soon as it reaches max charge.. You have to somewhat predict when a enemy is going to pop out of cover so that it finishes charging just as he pops up.

But the gameplay itself is still the good old Gears cover shooting mechanics.

I'm still early in the game, so there might be more cool stuff coming up, but I'm really liking it.

OK, now that I got to see the rain washing the gunk off my armor, I know what Dodger was talking about it. It's a very nice effect and I just sat there and watched it until my armor was all nice and clean again. :p

Finally got my Z9D and this game looks stunning in HDR for sure, the highlights, color depth and explosions are so much more impressive than the SDR mode. I can totally see myself addicting to HDR for this ongoing gen.
Cell phone cam doesn't begin to do these justice tho. The white and black are so blown out on the phone pics while you can see all the details crystal clear on the tv.

It's more of the same in the same way that the Halo, Uncharted, Tomb Raider and other games are. It's still a Gears game although they have added enough variety for it not to become stale so far (I'm in Chapter 3).

It feels more polished than the other Gears game to me. I just finished Gears of War ultimate so that is most recent comparison, although I remember the other Gears game as well. I never did play Judgement though. The movement feels smoother so there was definitely some tweaking there as well.

The graphics is definitely up there as far as X1 titles go. If you liked any of the previous Gears games then I don't think you would be disappointed with this one.

Yeah, I wish I had an HDR display to check it out in HDR. But, I won't be getting one for another year or two, assuming I stick to my budget. :p

It's all good tho, you'll get an even better set in a couple of years and the prices will only comedown. But the price for z9d is like a grand cheaper in Aus than the states surprisingly, so I just couldn't wait. But yeah love HDR!
