Gamescom 2009 : MS/Lionhead's Fable III Conference*

Um... just because the MS conference was lame doesn't make it disappear from existence :)

A confrence took place, it may have been poor/lame or any other vivid term you can come up with. But it wasn't an MS conference, it was a joint MGS/Lionhead natter about Fable 3. It was advertised as such before hand, in fact Eurogamer knew exactly what was happening as they had the exclusive.

Well then obviously MS didnt have anything to show except Fable 3 so they decided to call their conference MGS/Lionhead studio conference. :???:

Which doesnt make much of a difference anyways

They have things to show, it's more like Ms almost ignored the show.
Usually MS pushes games coming for the holiday season.

Gamescom is not a show many of the big publishers/developers etc make big announcements at (E3 was only 2 months ago). I'm not sure that MS even had any type of conference last year. As I said TGS is a month or so away. Its a big confrence and MS will be there in full force. Any major announcements will be made there, its nothing to do with them no having anything to show, its about showing at the correct events to gain full PR coverage. Sony obviously were happy to confirm the worst kept secret at this show as it suited them better.

I didnt say I was expecting it to be like E3. :???:

I realize that Reach announcement was pushed from E3 to TGS, but TGS is generally where Japanese games are announced. It's where MS announced the loss of Tekken exclusivity, for instance, or a whole bunch of SE and Taito XBLA games. I'm not sure they'll pull a Reach again since the announcement fell so flat on the Japanese audience last year (and even westerners were puzzled).

Sony announced a bunch of hardware last year at GC plus Eyepet and Singstar stuff -- it's Sony's 'casual' conference.

I'm not saying TGS is MS main focus point although it is important, I'm saying MS normally leaves major announcemnets to major shows, or set up it own press release. Gamescom is not that type of show. And Nesh the point I was making it was only a matter of 2 months ago when MS made a load of major announcements. Take the PS3 slim out of the Sony conference (which anyone with an interst knew about anyway) and lets be honest it was threadbare.

They werent super large announcment but they were interesting and more considering the size of the show. Like MS, Sony also kept stuff for TGS.

There were no new games but there was the equivalent of an 'NXE' announcement, a price-cut and new model. Yeah, if you exclude all the news, there's no news. And Sony is probably still holding GT5 back for TGS, since it's apparently playable on the show-floor. Not that I'm expecting a ton from SCEJ, as usual.

Ummmm, this is the first ever Gamescom, you know, right? Ergo it has no reputation as a venue to make big announcements at or not.

It's by far the largest European games event. It's the E3 of Europe. Obviously given the international nature of gaming, many publishers will happily fly round the world to show their wares. But if you're serious about the EU market, surely it makes sense to have a significant EU presence? Perhaps a good reason why Sony manages to do well here is because it doesn't treat Europeans like the ugly step-children, offering non-English content, turning up to EU events, etc.?

Good game announcement. Kind of weird they didn't show anything else. I'd like to see what the presentation schedule said. Was it listed as an MS conference, or a Lionhead conference or both? Doesn't really matter anyway. I didn't expect any new hardware from MS, or any new announcements for the Live service. Just about the only thing they could have announced was a price cut, but that can be done at any time, if they want. Another game or two being shown would be nice. I'm skeptical about Fable3 in 2010. I'll say Christmas 2011, unless it gets released as an unfinished game. They didn't even have gameplay shots yet.

Gamescom is on off shoot of Leipzig Games Convention as far as I'm aware, thats why it was cancelled this year. I don't know the specifics behind it but there were many complaints that as an European platform Leipzig was not up to it. Gamescom was then announced. As for MS European presence well I'm sure things can and should be done to improve it but saying that I'm in the UK where the 360 is doing pretty well!

I'm don't think that's a fair characterization. You seem to have forgotten the PS3 launch. MS would have to go a long way to match that one.

MS's European operations are no where near the equal of SCEE at this point, but I think they are pretty engaged there between building up those operations and the investments they have made in Rare and Lionhead.

My sense is that the lack of a major conference at this event has more to do with timing than a lack of regard for the territory. How is their presence on the show floor? If that is minimal, then maybe you have a point.

Oh yeah, episodic content for Fable 2? Seems good to me, and it's coming soon. My gamerscore for Fable2 is something like 1100 right now.

It's an independent rival to GC. Two European events didn't make sense, and in the end Leipzig pulled out. You can read about it here.
