Gamers prefer PS3 and 360 over Rev..

EndR

Regular
Ziff Davies media has conducted a survey for next gen consoles and the results is based on the north american "tastes and impressions", just for the record.

Some interesting info comes out:

Before we move on, the basics. This blind study was conducted by the Strategy Group using natural selection via telephone, projected to the entire US and took place from May to July of this year. 1,558 total surveys were collected during this three month span. Also, some of the percentages may not add up to 100% because we're excluding staistics from handhelds, PCs, etc. and focusing on next-generation.

Now, onto what matters! 37% are considering purchasing a PlayStation 3 over the next 12 months, with Xbox 360 close behind with 34% and Revolution trailing at 14%. That's a surprising jump for Microsoft, considering the study found only 30% owned an Xbox compared to 51% with a PlayStation 2. If this study's an indication, they've made some serious ground in the minds of gamers this past generation.

You thread title implies that the PS3 has more clout than the X360, but the body of the text shows that the X360 is dead even with it instead, a huge leap for Microsoft.

Since the number of surveys are greater than 1,200, the margin of error is lower that +/- 3%, and puts the X360 on the same level as the PS3.

For Nintendo no, but MS has made some grounds and, if you read the article, apparently some thinks that the 360 will be more powerful than PS3, a legacy from the Xbox vs PS2 era (which is now) ;)

Still, anything can happen..

The thread title is "Gamers prefer PS3 AND 360 over Rev".. which should imply that PS3 and 360 are "equal"...

It's amazing what MS was able to accomplish this Gen as far as mindshare. Next-gen should be a much closer race and I'm all for it! Haven't been this excited since the Genesis and SNES days

Considering Sony hasn't announced the date PS3 will be available in US, the revolution being even more unknown, and Microsoft havking set the date for November this year, and the launch being so close for xbox360, the results aren't surprising.

rabidrabbit - the results speak to the fact that the PS brandname is being forgotten...

if they'd include canada in these NA polls the XBOX would be the clear leader in NA.

Its more about whats closer, regular consumers are going to be anticipating the 360 over the PS3 simply because its closer. Also whoever stated that this was about PS3 and 360 over Revolution is another reason why their equaled out has a point there to.

i think the points for revolution are more valid, but PS3 has had plenty of exposure... I don't think that can be used as an 'excuse'.

Microsoft has clearly made some serious gains in mindshare, whether they can put out enough convincing games, and a sufficiently powerful console to cash in on those gains is the question that i'm waiting to see answered.

except when you poll japan only 2% choose the closer x360.

But to be fair they were 2 copletely different polls, the japanese one asked what their #1 system was.

This poll simply asks will you buy Console X. So it allows for multi-platform owners.

I think this just reinforces the software sales we're seeing for MS in NA, they're nearly on par with PS2.

There's not liking Sony, and then there's just being silly.

Seriously, have a look at the market. If PS is being "forgotten", then the market as a whole is doomed.

Despite the exposure brought by E3, as a market offering, PS3 is a much fuzzier concept right now than X360. I'm actually somewhat surprised X360 wasn't leading in a poll like this at this stage.

Isn't it useless to include the Revolution here? There is almost nothing known about it...

Exactly, PC-Engine summed it up in his post. Theres no comparison in that sense that can be made. The only SOLID information we have about any system is the X360 and thats beause its release is only a few months away (as opposed to 7-8 Months away, which will likely be the time PS3 and the Rev are released).

whatever, if this was 4 years ago it would be 90% PS3 just because of the brand name.

would you be happier if I said the XBOX brand is gaining mindshare? How is that different than Sony losing mindshare?

4 Years ago Sony would have dominated a poll like this because the Xbox was just coming out..or not even out yet. Its not a matter a Brand Name but what people could actually buy (which at the time would have the PS2). Now that the Xbox is out the lines have been drawn and its not surprising that Sony has lost some of its buyers because of the Xbox...where do you think most Xbox gamers are pulled from? My guess they had a PS2 at some point and also pulled gamers from the PC market.

Meh I don't agree,

I feel that the PS brand is undeniably losing steam in NA, it has been for at least 2 years, while XBOX is constantly gaining. This poll just shows that trend...

NA buyers are much less loyal than Japanese, they will forget brands and move onto the next.

Lets agree to disagree, we can leave it at that.

Of course it can be different. If that mindshare for games generally is growing, one company can gain mindshare, but not at the expense of the other, at least in absolute terms. In a market with multiple competitors one company can gain mindshare without impacting the other. Just as in the market, where despite "gains" made by the competition, another company can keep or improve their marketshare.

Look at Sony. Despite Xbox and GC, Sony is on track to retain or improve on the marketshare they won with the original Playstation. That said, what gains has the competition made this gen? Xbox and GC combined have sold little more than the N64 alone managed (5-10m more). If you count Saturn, Xbox + GC are unlikely to match the total sales of the competition last gen. Sony is also hitting sales milestones much sooner with PS2 than they did with Playstation - PS2 is what's expanding the market. That's an incredible achievement on Sony's part given the figures the original Playstation achieved already, and rubbishes the idea of a "forgotten brand".

edit - I'm looking at the global picture here, btw. I think it's a more important one than any single market. If you want to look solely at NA, then if you call a console/brand outselling its competitors by 2:1 or more at most times "forgotten", I'm not sure what you call its competitors. I'd not be surprised if Xbox has taken some mindshare from Sony in NA, but given Sony's dominant position, it's difficult not to in a multi-competitor environment.

I prefer Rice and Beans over Pizza.... o.o

I say...who cares what people prefer....theres absolutley no reason to worry about that stuff (as a gamer)...unless you hold allegience to a brand and need to bring up numbers to trump the competitors consumer.

When a statement like his is made, it simply needs to be addressed.

I also did a little research since my last post, and if you look at last gen console figures up to 2001 and compare them to current gen console figures up to 2004, Sony's marketshare in the US has remained the same, if not grown slightly, from last gen to this gen.
