GameCube format gets hacked.. WindWaker on XDCC!

There's a chance it could work out, but for now GCN piracy is in limbo. Ooo, a bunch of folks are offering TWW on -! Yeah, and some guy is offering a 1.5GB ZIP of retail Half-Life 2 on -.. let's go download and burn it! Yay! ;)

do not discuss where to get illegal copys of things on this message board. You can talk ab out the format being hacked but if you post a place to download it . I will have to put your name on the list to get baned.

out of interest what are the barriers in place (hardware wise) in preventing this type of hacking?

I guess it could be the laser frequency and the lenght and the pit spacing of the signal wave. Since its a proprietary format and doesnt read any other disks they can customize how the laser reads the discs since its not under any commercial standards. Panasonic even had to add a second laser to their Q system to read DVDs.

Ripping off data from an optical disc is something, making GC read it on another format is something else entirely. My guess is they'll do something similar to N64's hack where you plugged an HDD with the optical drive's wire, bypassing the laser lens (in n64's case, the cartridge reader of course). I've also heard wild stories that it might need the GBPlayer (maybe nintendo opened a loophole without realizing it? )

Not quite the hack the mainstream pirates want to see or bother with though :?

Well, they're only halfway there and that's almost two years after the original release of the console. Actually I'm quite surprised it took them so long.
I doubt that piracy will get big on the GCN though. It's not that you simply dowload an ISO, burn it onto a regular DVD or CD and play it. It's interesting for geeks who simply want to do it to show that it can be done but far too complicated for the regular user.

I don't believe that simiilar latency/read rates are enough to conclude that GOD are Vanilla DVD discs + extra encryption.

Interesting.. is it within the realm of possibility that a firmware/bios flash on the GC could have it read DVDs then? Well, mini-DVDs that is.

Teasy: Heh, I agree. *cough* Metroid Prime *cough* That's about it, though. Zelda, Mario Sunshine, and a few others are the runners up for the top spot.. but Metroid Prime clearly takes it IMHO.

JVD: Wow, I'm sorry that I posted that you could get "things" on a certain four-letter "word" beginning with X that remains in Zurich's topic line without an edit.. (no offense to you, Zurich)

I understand the rules, JVD.. and if I broke them, it was borderline. Do you know what.. that thing is, buddy? BTW, what's wrong with that other word.. the 5-letter one beginning with K? They haven't lost their lawsuits yet.. ;) *cough*

It is not exactly a cheap or overly practical mod, but you could always use some electronics to make a DVD drive look like its native drive to a gamecube.
