Formula 1 - The Eco Friendly Motorsport!

Why did the FIA allow Benetton to get away with tampering with fuel rigs, despite being found guilty of it? Why did the FIA not react to Toyota when two employee's are currently being convicted of stealing, and implementing, data?

Because Mclaren are beating Ferrari? ;) I somehow think that Ferrari wouldn't care about this if Mclaren wasn't very likely to win both constructor's and driver's championship. They'd just sack/punish/prosecute Stepney, and that would be that. But as always at this time of year, Ferrari has something in their back pockets to raise a complaint to the FIA. Last year it was the wheel damping systems inside the Renaults when the Renaults were winning.

Look at what happened when movable wing surfaces were banned at the beginning of the year. Ferrari simply dodged around the spirit of the ruling by making their movable wings capable of passing the weight test, but still deforming under racing load. No punishment to Ferrari for continuing to implement moving wings, just a change of the rules again. They are doing the same with the wheel covers for their wheels. But a couple of years back Honda decides to "interpret the rules" a particular way, and they lose all their points.

I can see this going to court, if for no other reason than the disparity in punishments given to other teams. The FIA always seem to consider Ferrari to be untouchable because the governing body would do anything to make sure Ferrari stays in F1.

Murray Walker said this morning that FIA = Ferrari International Assistance. Not that he's an unbiased reference, but it made me giggle.

McLaren ratted out the mass damper on the Renault.

It is Ferrari's right to complain to the FIA or not. The victim has a right to press charges or not, like in most crimes!

In the Toyota case, they were too incompetent to gain any advantage from the 653/F2002 data, the Toyota car in 2003 looked like a carbon copy of the greatest single seater of all time.

Ferrari's car is 100% legal, it passed all scrutineering. Moreover Ferrari were not the only team to change their floor/rear wing, nearly all teams did it. Renault last year was always 100% legal, it passed scrutineering. The McLaren in 1998 was 100% legal, it passed all scrutineering. The McLaren in 2000 was 100% legal, it passed all scrutineering (apart from the tampered engine seal in Austria).

Ferrari designed their floor/wing so it would pass the FIA test. Renault last year and in 2005 used TMD in a way that passed the FIA test but was against the spirit of the rules. McLaren in 1998 used the third break pedal in a way that passed the FIA test but was against the spirit of the rules. Mercedes in 2000 used Beryllium in their engines till it was outlawed by the FIA on safety grounds.

None of those incidents are incidents of cheating. None of those cars were illegal. They all passed scrutineering. The cars are built to pass the FIA test, not 100% within the spirit of the regulations! This is how teams gain competitive advantage!

The claims of FIA bias for Ferrari are way overblown, given that we have the evidence in front of us now, it is abundantly clear that the decision made was not the correct sporting choice but a commercial one. All parties admit to that.

Moreover it is also now clear that Fernando Alonso is a disgrace. I have never ever heard of a driver that would attempt to blackmail their own team. Alonso really has no loyalty and no respect. I wish Hamilton all the best for the championship; I firmly believe he had little or nothing to do with any of the cheating that happened. He is the closest thing yet to a new Michael Schumacher on the commercial side, if he wins in 2007 it will be a similar result to Schumacher’s first title in 1994, one which was equally as dodgy.

EDIT: Honda cheated in 2005 with the fuel tank. That wasn't any creative interpretation - it was a hidden fuel tank!

So, what actual bits are used on the McLaren from the Ferrari again ?

From 1.4 of the FIA charges against McLaren

"In particular, McLaren was charged with the unauthorised possession of one or more of the following technical documents that could be used for one or more of the following purposes: designing, engineering, building, checking, testing, developing and running a 2007 Ferrari Formula One car"

Could be used for making a 2007 F1 car. Were they ever likely to? That's an insane charge.

The nearest they got in the whole of the remaining pages of the release was in relation to the brakes and that was

"we are looking at something similar"

Maybe because of the info, maybe they were already down that path, impossible to prove.

On the other hand it does show Couglan was a complete liar and McLaren were using the data for setup purposes, I think they thought that was ok as it had been done in the past by all teams, but this time it went slightly too far not to be punished. They made mistakes allround.

The interesting thing is that if Stepney gets punished then he will have nothing to lose and will publish all his stuff also. I bet that is a lot more juicy than these emails. He has already said he knows where all the bodies are hidden. Ferrari are bound to have done similar

This could be just the start.....

I'm very disappointed in Alonso. :(
yep, to tell that your team is cheating and to threaten your boss, that unless the team treats him equally ...
who da **** is Alonso ?! He's a spanish driver in a english team, after all, he should just shut up and do his best to make Hamilton's car as fast as possible.

Te tell that your team cheated, how dishonorable!!!

Alonso was not asking to be treated equally ! are you joking thats what he was unhappy about.
He was asking to be treated preferencially as in put me ahead of lewis or else...

Exciting Time trial on Spa today. I'm happy to see that Kimi took the pole as Spa is THE drivers circuit :) Massa and Alonso were quite close though.

Alonso took part in the cheating, then tried to blackmail his boss with that same cheating to get preferential treatment over his team mate. You think we should pat him on the back for running to the FIA (when he had no choice after Dennis tipped off the FIA) after cheating and blackmail that has cost his team massive amounts of money and reputation?

Yeah. We got 4 Ferrari's on the first 2 rows tommorrow :D

To bad I want be able to watch as I have to attend some family party. Its amazing how they always manage to pick dates on the day I want to see something. In 2 weeks I have another one when the next race is, it cant be coincidence.

I can't wait. The recent drama has added to the excitement, and Spa is definitely my favourite circuit on the calendar.

Its not the FIA hate you :D

ps: you should be supporting Spyker with them being your national team...

I wish spyker all the best but apart from the name there is little dutch about it. Basically its still the same team as in the Jordan days, everything is still UK based and the only dutch driver left cant even drive because he also signed a contract with super aguri. And now the team has been bought by this Indian guy who probably wants India in the team name so there is just about nothing left of the first Dutch F1 team ever. Sad but true especially since the B-spec shows some improvement and I think with a couple of years they could get away from atleast the last 2 rows.

Wow, what a thriller quali. Very entertaining and Kimi's Q2 time was incredible.

hehe. Depsite being thrown out of the construstors championship and having no points, McLaren are still likely to appeal the lost of constructors points from the Hungry qualifying.

They are now fighting for all the "virtual" constructors points they can get as the money they have to pay is netted against where they would have finished in the championship, so although they won't get any points back from the appeal, it can still have a financial impact for them.
