Fallout 4 [PS4, PS5, XO, XBSX|S, PC, XGP]

Lol ! I found the T-60 very early in the game, there was a guy wearing it , somewhere on the right of Corvega or somewhere accros the water plant and I forgot to even chk if we can talk to him and simply attacked him with everything !
That one even looks so cool, has flames gfx all over it :D ! I think it's called Atom Cat or something. Used it to defeat super mutants at that Satellite Array area using Missile Launcher !

Btw, went ahead into Diamond City finally when it struck me that all these missions I was doing were all side missions !

And got a very unique reward from the USS-Constitution quest line

I've not done this yet. I think it's a testament to the size of the game and the number of distinct quest lines that a lot of us are doing very different things.

I've skipped most of this topic and bear in mind, I've never played a Fallout game. The only reason I'm semi interested in this is because it's from Betheseda (or how the heck you spell it), I kind of played Skyrim, loving Witcher 3 and now I've watched a trailer of Fallout 4. Am I completely bonkers to say this somehow reminds me of Half-Life, but with RPG elements? Is this what it is? Essentially a first-person-shooter built around an open-world kind of game?

Yes... I've been under a rock.

Think of it as Skyrim with guns. Replace the rolling hills with a nuclear wasteland and the bandits with raiders. Instead of dragons you have mutated animals that come in all shapes and sizes. Fundamentally, the two games play very similarly. You can tell the same engine (albeit in a refined state) is still under the hood. Mechanics like stealth, lock picking and melee combat are basically like-for-like. The one major difference between FO4 and earlier Bethesda games is how competent the action feels. It's not a rpg that merely looks like a first person shooter. Now it also plays like one. I think that's a good thing, by the way.

Settler brought back the power armor he stole, by the way:D

Oh, and one more thing: wondering how the game is holding up for everyone. Seems remarkably polished for a Bethesda game so far. Heck, seems remarkably polished for an open-word rpg in general. I've easily spent 60+ hours with it, and save for Dogmeat's spider-like ability to stick to vertical surfaces from time to time, the game has held up remarkably well so far. Framerate hasn't gotten any worse, loading times haven't ballooned either, and I have yet to experience a single crash. (PS4)

I agree with all of that Sigfried.

I'm at about 35 hours and haven't had any major issues on PC. No crashes, no quest issues, just a few minor temporary glitches like invisible guns.

It's really nothing like Half-Life other than being a first person shooter. The RPG elements are very stealthily done and there is a lot of math and algorithms dictating what you can do and how well you can do it but it's not in your face.

For example, the shooting mechanics and stealth are solid from the outset but your effectiveness with them (and every other ability) is tied to perks. You can take one perk each level and you gain levels by filling your experience bar by doing things - almost any thing like completing quests, discovering new areas, picking locks, hacking equipment, using powers of persaussian, killing things in different ways, disarming traps etc etc.

The early levels feel like a shooter but as you progress through the game and the levels, your choice of perks gradually become more important. If you neglect locking picking perks you'll begin to encounter doors and safes that you can't open meaining you may have to take the long (and dangerous) way around to get somewhere, or you can't steal all that cool stuff in the safe.

Similarly combining perks for extra damage in combat can make a huge difference. For example, I'm playing a sneaky sniper so I've taken a series of perks called Sneak which increases my ability to move around undetected. I also have taken a series of perks called Mister Sandman which let me kill sleeping targets instantly but more importantly, also boosts attack damage I shoot somebody undetected (helped by Sneak). Finally I've taken a series of Perks called Rifleman because these boost basic damage done by non-automatic rifles. So all three combined make me as a sniper very powerful. I'll also be taking the Sniper perks (which let you hold your breath longer and do more damage) when I've taken a few more important perks.

You don't need to plan like this but it can help.

Easily 60-70 hours in an no game-breaking or quest bugs. Quite remarkable for a Bethesda launch game!

^might wanna throw in the Ninja perk as well if you're after insane amounts of damage.

I'm a sneaky son of a bitch as well. As I'm also way into base building, travelling with companions and silver tongued flirtation or coercion, I had to put loads of points into charisma too. Might eventually go Ninja as well, but so far the 2x damage from sneaking combined with 80% more rifle damage (or 60% extra damage with automatic weapons) has been more than enough for bringing the pain.
Mr. Sandman should be especially good if you're using automatic silenced weapons.

I've had one hard crash back to the OS in around 50 hours of playtime plus another instance where most of the HUD disappeared and I couldn't activate anything in game other than the load menu (PS4). I do find V.A.T.S. totally uncontrollable, especially with multiple enemies though admittedly I've got the controller sensitivity cranked up so that may be related.

So far so good, though I think Codsworth may be hitting on me.

Ninja is also on my list but Agility isn't high enough. With a few piece of apparel I carry with me I can boost my Charm to 10 when needed and the nice thing about the new conversation system is if you can encounter a 'speech check', you can look away then bring up your Pipboy and swap outfits, then re-engage in the conversation :) I also really want to pay with armour crafting but I've neglected the perk - there always seems to be a more urgent situational perk!

I thought I would have picked up Toughness by now but again, no opportunity. So many perks, so few levels! :runaway:I also want Commando for automatic weapons but again, I've invested elsewhere.

I've crashed once. I've also lost three of my companions. Every time I've sent them to the settlement I never see them again. I have the one Minuteman guy with me now. Maybe I should pick up the lone wanderer perk? I was looking forward to a couple of companions I read about in the guide though.

^^^ Maybe try installing a bell in your settlement (unless you haven't done so already)? Causes all the settlers and companions in the area to gather around. I "misplaced" Dogmeat once, and that's how I found him again. It's also really useful if you want to assign the settlers to different activities.

I raised it mostly for the perks like "local leader" (because I accidentally scrapped the weapons work bench in Sanctuary and you need the perk to make a new one) and the one that makes companions more resilient. Got a bunch of points in armorer and gun nut as well. Admittedly you do find plenty of really well upgraded weapons and armor pieces in the wild, so it's more for fun than out of necessity.

YEa, except for one hard crash to OS and the Brahmins walking on rooftops in Sanctuary, its been totally bug free till now.

@Phil It did remind me of Half Life too, due to the colours during day, especially around the Train yard :) ! Having played Witcher 3 extensively, this one is not that "entertaining" but it is very addictive, I lost three full work days to FO4 :runaway: ! Very difficult to stop playing, though I don't know why.

Just make BEll a Sanctuary, ring it and all will come out of the woods and assemble at the bell. Thats how I found my fully loaded Coddsworth !

Finding people without a bell at the larger settlements is tricky. I "lost" Macready at Starlight Drive In then noticed he was gardening. A bell is essential at settlements.

I had a flying feral ghoul the other day. It kind of ran towards me and then suddenly just shot vertically up into the sky and disappeared; couple of seconds later it's landed just behind me and seemed perfectly fine. Until I shot it that is. And I've got a number of spinning limbs stuck in various bit of geometry. Slightly unnerving to see them all gyrating and wobbling every time I pass them...
