If you go to storagereview etc and read up a bit, you'll find people telling the exact same story as yours basically, and instead of maxtor you insert any of the major brand names...

ERD commander is a nice lost file recovery tool, but you have to have at least one windows directory since it builds on it.
It also alows you to search for specific files and not g a general restore (which sounds more along what you're looking for).
I didn't get your post so much-Drives are recognised in BIOS? this is crucial to assesing if you have a hardware problem on your hands.
Also, If many things have died on you recently (and not due to old age), you might consider checking your PSU.

Yup, it'll make me feel much better. Inconclusive or not.
