Elden Ring [2022-21-01] [PS, XB, PC]

Watching a streamer play this, my god the stuttering is crazy at times. Even in a closed in area at the start in the caves, dodging around in combat there is sometimes very noticeable stuttering.
What were they playing it on? I was really shocked at how well it ran for me, didn't feel stuttery ever.

Must be one of those hit or miss ports. :(

Man I remember this pain.
i think as long as windows detects the controller than you need to go into steam and set it up. Otherwise no go

I think sometimes you have to go into Steam Big Picture mode and do some custom controller config thing to get controllers working in some games

Thanks guys, it was a weird combination of steam emulation and a few restarts with my logitech g13 unplugged...

The game is the exact opposite of Sifu, that I was playing right before this.
It's going to be hard to adjust.
Also, the frame rate is atrocious... But I haven't fiddled with the settings yet, so I might be able to fix it.
The first thing I did, after reaching the surface, was to go down a cliffside and die horribly by a giant as I tried to get back up :p
The game seems fun. :)

Edit.
So I enabled Riva statistics server, and my frame rate drops from 60 to 56-7...
But when it does, it is very obvious and stutery...
I'm going forum hunting to see if I can disable v-sync.

Edit 2
OK, after disabling v-sync, the game runs quite nice.
The problem then, is the screen tearing.
If I enable g-sync, I get a pretty great experience.
My only problem is, that my monitor is a freesync monitor that is not g-sync compatible, and flickers a lot when I have g-sync enabled...
Anyway, I just thought I'd write this, in case someone finds it useful.

Yeah it's weird. I've had the short stutter when loading into a new world chunk, but I haven't had the seconds long pauses that Cohh had while fighting the guardian dog mini-dungeon boss. I just killed that boss as well and not a single stutter or pause during the fight. So, I'm curious what triggers it. Not looking forward to when/if it happens to me. It'll probably happen during a boss fight and then I'll get my face stomped in. Well, let's be honest, I'd probably get my face stomped in by the boss anyway. :D

Briefly on PC performance, I ran it last night on the "high" preset 'cept for shadows which I maxxed out and was getting a pretty solid 60 with the low dips in the upper 40s.

Gaming at 1080p, Ryzen 5 1600, 16GB, 8GB RX 580 with freesync on with the drivers that came out yesterday.

The game would make me rage quit if it weren't for cheat engine, people play this for fun?

Thats very reasonable for the given hardware. The GPU is OneX class basically (somewhat more capable then).

An RTX 3090.

Wow, im on 2080Ti but i want a 3090 :p

On the PC side, weirdly people with more powerful hardware seem to be suffering hitches more than people with more modest hardware. Or more modest hardware using more modest settings.

I’m certain dx11 would have run much smoother for them. Too bad they opted to try dx12.

Too bad they didn't give a solid effort at it and opted to release before its ready. They should have pulled in Amd/Nvidia/Microsoft to assist on their entire DX12 attempt.

I wonder if those streaming the game are also using that same PC for streaming with Nvidia GPU Encoding also enabled. In the past some streamers had issues with other games with that combination. They seemed to be fixed around a month later or so. Don't know if it was Drivers updates, Game updates, or StreamLabs/OBS/Etc streaming updates which resolved it when they toggled HW Encoding back on.

I wonder if it's because people with weaker GPUs are using lower graphics settings. Perhaps it's the higher graphical settings that trigger those really long pauses? Alternatively, maybe the really long pauses are limited to Ampere GPUs as I don't think I've seen anyone report those stutters on Pascal, Turing or AMD based GPUs.

Of course, it's not like I'm tracking all reports of seconds long pauses, so that's just random speculation as I mostly see people with Ampere based GPUs complaining about it.

At least in Cohh's case he has a separate PC that he uses for encoding and streaming. His gaming PC and consoles feed the video into that machine.

Makes me wonder if they just targeted more common or lower performant setups and settings with the thought that high end wares will probably handle the game just fine.

They may have opted for dx12 on PC because of the xbox consoles. Why support two versions of directx when you can support one? This game seems to the be the answer to that question.
Yea I suspected similar. Xbox consoles do support dx11 but performance could be poor for them with a game like this which is why they opted to drop it.

This game is so amazing though.. The sense of discovery is just on another level. Getting a weapon or an item that helps you progress and overcoming odds in this game feels incredible. Just as all the souls games really...but here, with the open world, there's just so much to discover, and coming across things on your own without being necessarily lead to them is so additcing.

What non-fromsoft games kinda similar to that? Botw? Shadow of colossus?

The reviews and user comments makes me want to try to play but there's no demo and I historically didn't like any fromsoft games.

The CBR solution on Pro (played via PS5 BC) is really solid here (1800p CBR). One of the best solution I have seen. I believe DF already praised the same solution used in Sekiro.

The game perceptible resolution is very similar to PS5 peformance mode (native ~1500p-1600p). Main difference come from less vegetation and less texture details on Pro mode obviously. But locked 60fps is really hard to pass!

It's really a shame they didn't use this CBR solution in all versions in the performance mode.
