Elden Ring [2022-21-01] [PS, XB, PC]

Hopefully you either already like Souls games or you'll grow to like it. It is most definitely not a genre for everyone. So, I hope you don't end up regretting it. :)

I finished bloodborne and DS3 on ps4. DS3 is definitely one of my favorite games, despite being super hard. I love the the feeling of exploring unknown, i think this is what sold souls formula for me. I kinda suck at those games and it may take for me a few days to defeat a boss but the overall experience is fantastic!

Finished Horizon, started this. I have no idea how this game, looking like it does, can run the way it does even on PS5. Baffling. When Demon Souls (or even Horizon, or many other games) look they way they do, and run so much better. Come on From!

Gameplay-wise, I'm still in the HATING it phase, but I think I have that with every new Souls game. We'll see.

different teams, engines and skills ;)

Don't know. Sure it's an open world game but I feel like DS3 looked a bit better, considering it's a last gen title?

Its minor update from DS3 imo, the tech is definitely not their strongest point. Maybe the engine is not well suited for open world, i dunno but it looks very mediocre and runs like crap.

I also don't think that going into this straight from Horizon FW was a great idea. It really does look like a so-so looking PS4 game and the difference is jarring. Plus that framerate, oh dear!

Yeah, this game is most definitely not for everyone. But you can say that about any game on the market. :)

I generally recommend for people to watch some people play it first and then think really hard about whether or not this might be a game they might like. Main reason is that if you don't like it and don't have the aptitude, patience, or natural reflexes (age, disability, etc.) to overcome punishingly tough enemies, then it's just going to be endless frustration.

However, if you are capable of those things, then the game can give you an endorphin rush that is almost unmatched among games made today.

The risk vs. reward is extremely high for Souls games.

Risk reward is actually very little :)
Just get over the hump that your souls don’t matter and risk drops down to just time invested.

the game scales up monster souls as you kill bigger things; so don’t worry about souls lost. Just clear it. You will eventually find a decent place to farm souls and when you do, you get all the souls you need.

Switched from Horizon 2 over to this game - really really like it. Playing on PS5, no major problems so far...not the best graphics tec, sure, but the art style as always is very nice to me.

Open world is a great fit to it, the sensation of wandering around and actually find important things on a map is great to me. Combat feels good.

Somehow, to me, the game feels somewhat like Dragon's Dogma 2 (or what DD2 could have been).

Overall, the game pulled me in and I already put 15h over the weekend into it. Nice.

PS: There are some issues with it, like no respec and upgrading weapons take way to much resources...all of these reduces the amount of experimentation one can do and kinda locks you in into the build, which is meh. It seems that only the Outriders team learned from Diablo 3 team what made this game so amazing.

Just started and decided o get it on XSX and use my pc screen with freesync (VRR). It runs good so far, i didnt noticed any frame rate issues beside one scene where weather changed (heavy rain) and i did sudden change of camera angle, it really felt not 60fps smooth but gameplay wise it works well enought that i can forget that this game has perf issues.
Anyway i'm hooked in the first dungeon dying constantly to the mini (?) boss :D. Atmosphere is amazing, love it, fully understand why it got so high scores.

It's taken me a while but I'm finally getting back into the groove and just like sports, the more you play the "slower" the game becomes.

I'm no longer feeling like the attacks are coming too fast for me to react to. Before I was having to plan what I was going to do ahead of time and then hope things went according to plan. Works for the easier enemies but won't do much for me later in the game.

But now that I've been playing for a bit, the game has "slowed" down to the point where I can see an attack and react accordingly. Well, at least until I get to the harder enemies that have even faster attacks and then I'll have to get used to that as well. :p

Loving every moment of death, death, death, then victory. :)

Playing elden ring is like living beside a rail road track. After a while you just forget about the ground shaking and the sound of the freight cars passing by once in a while. LOL

I no longer notice the frame dips, only get hit hard on the complete stall outs.

Also going from such an upbeat, beautiful game to something so dark and nasty (intentionally designed so) is harsh to handle, I think I need to transition to it more.

And yet, I am rushing through HFW because the couple of hours I put into Elden Ring had so much... I dunno personality and wonder that I cannot wait to go back and see what I discover. Tech wise its a downer (although it looks much better than I expected, youtube does not do the game justice) but the art is too good to ignore.

Like in every field, there are large variations in talent/ability.

I think From Software needs to heavily invest in rendering engineers. Listening to DF made me wonder this game is released on xone,ps4, ps4pro, xbox one x, series s/x/,ps5 and PC and as they mentioned is only playable comfortably on series consoles WITH vrr and ps5 running ps4pro code in back compat mode. Thats crazy! Those games are very popular and receiving great reviews they can surely afford to hire more people.

I love this game and hate it at the same time. LOL.

In theory, I don't like the part where I feel that a portion of the difficulty of the game is due to your ignorance. And where part of your ignorance is due to the lack of hand-holding by the game. But at the same time in actuality, I love it when the light bulb goes off and something I was struggling with becomes easy with a simple change in how I approach it.

However, there are some parts that can easily add to the frustration because they are poorly designed. I spent the first few hours getting continuously smashed and couldn't figure out how to level up. The world suddenly opens up but there is still a linear path that you have to take before leveling is allowed. The game does point you in the right direction but in most open-world games, those types of pointers often lead you to the continuation of the storyline, not to the activation of the leveling mechanic.
