EA sales break down by platform

That's pretty amazing that the 360 outsold all other platforms combined for them. I'm a bit surprised as I thought the PS2 was a bit closer, but I guess you have to factor in the lower price per unit there.

<edit>
Year over year data in there also.

360 sales up $52 million
ps2 sales down $194 million
DS up $33 million
PSP down $43 million

There are EA games that are not released on old gen platforms. Currently next gen consoles are getting the most EA releases (excluding Wii). Additionally they dont mention the number of units sold. DS and PSP games are sold at lower prices than console games.

Keep in mind EA are only going to be thinking about profit - so the 360 appears to be the golden goose, regardless of sales numbers. Selling 2mil units vs 3mil doesn't matter if the 2mil makes more money.

Alternate ending:
What PSP releases pushed the system above the PS3? That's nuts!

I think the numbers just reflect what we have seen in NA since the 360 launch. The owners of the 360 buy lots and lots of software. MS has really tapped into the 18-35 year old hard core gamers with lots of disposible income demographic.

Well I went through GameSpot and tried to find all of EA's releases during the time period for those figures. Here's what I found:

Observations:
- April to June is a really slow period (low sales all around).
- DS sales in 2007 much higher than 2006, whereas for PSP it's the other way around, 2006 sales were higher than 2007.
- nice 360 sales.

I don't think that's the case. Despite high next-gen gaming costs, I still expect bulk of the 360 hardcore gamers to be kids.

I certainly don't think that's the case. My friends and I all own 360 and fit the below 35 mark. Then aquaintances and so forth in the same range. Also, judging by the people on live, kids are far less common than I thought they would be.

For the 360 to have the software sales and attach rate it has, the membership has to have enough disposable income to buy one game after another. Kids on allowances don't have that luxury.

Back to EA numbers:

So yeah, the 360 sells software. I'm sure every dev out there is well aware of this fact. This is all 3party too.

These numbers do put the insane amount of money Halo3 generated in perspective: $170m in 24 hours alone for Halo vs $218m for three months of all EA 360 games.

Halo3 did get insane amounts of marketing and its the mascot of the xbox ofcourse.

Wii doesnt do that bad either btw. Still nothing compared to x360 but given how most ea wii games are ps2 versions as best its not to bad.

I agree with you, but would just like to say that it depends heavily on the game. There's a fair number of (annoingly good) kids playing Halo 3 and Fifa 2008, however Forza 2 is almost exclusively male adults.

Cheers

This is irrelevant with my point. Additionally sales alone cant tell much about profitability

What is your point? The inclusion of units sold would only allow you to extrapolate the average amount of revenue generated per software unit. It still wouldn't tell much about profitability. The table lack cost figures which are necessary to determine profitability.

While MActivision increased their total revenues by $422M, EA have them decreased by $161M. I imagine EA CEOs might be a bit nervous. It's a bad thing though, as their sports line-up improved greatly across the board (I played only NHL 07&08, but reportedly the same is true for other franchises).
