E3 2010: Pre-Conference Discussion & Predictions

Well, something tells me with the new ad saying it's compatible with Kinect, they could ship this very soon, even before Kinect is out. Maybe we get confirmation tomorrow?

The fact that Italian ad is meant to air just after the conference, basically means you should be able to buy it very soon, in weeks or less. It's definitely not going to be launched in Fall along with kinect.

If they could get the power brick inside the new design then I will call this a winner.

Yea, anyone think it looks a bit too much like a PC accessory like an external hardrive or router or something?

It's kinda ugly, but just getting an internal power source would be an improvement. Still, a bit of a shame they couldn't really make it significantly smaller AND ditch the brick. They may still be pretty paranoid about heat issues.

Yeah when I first saw the picture the first thing to come to mind is a slim styled 06-09 Alienware pc. I like the look. It looks mean. It would be nice if this was the actual successor to the 360 with a more beefier gpu, 8 core cpu, and 3 gbs of ram. I guess well have to wait two more years for that dream to come true.

I thought it resembled the Wii more...

YES, Alienware PC, that's it, I was trying to remember what it reminded me off.

It doesn't suit the 360, its more like a throwback to the agressive design of the original Xbox rather than the elegance of the 360 design.

GAF is freaking out over the reveal, naturally. As to power source, there's a pic of a slimmer power brick floating around, but I have no idea if it's legit.

Seems like it's an unwritten rule that a "Slim" design of a console has to be significantly uglier than the original :???:
PSTwo, PS3 Slim, and now this xbox360 redesign, that doesn't even seem to be any smaller.
I don't know why MS even bothered with the redesign, it's uglier than the old and it isn't even smaller.
If it complemented the Kinetic's design, that would be ok, but even the old xb360 matched the Kinetics design better.
It really looks like a PC mod case, or some PC component, which I don't like.

The included WiFi is ok, but from the comments regarding PS3 vs. xb360, it sounds like it never was a feature that was much missed (I sure haven't missed it after I hardwired my PS3)

Edit: Apparently, the newly designed xbox360 is meant to sit vertical, the design just doesn't lend itself to a horizontal position, with the slanted lines and cooling vents. They really should have gone for slot loading then.

The size looks to caused by the internal hard drive. Not sure about power supply, but if that connector on the motherboard is right, then it should still be external.

Personally I thought it looked cool when I first seen it. Bummed about no slot loaded DVD though. Most likely won't get one to replace my Elite. Don't need the 250gb drive or wireless. Only way I get one is if they make Kinect SKU that has better value than the Kinect by itself.

So what has been shown? (from the VG247 link):

- kid controlling Kameo (but not sure that will be a game)
- 'a driving game' (not sure if this will be a real game)
- controlling avaters (this is confirmed, probably the 'send animated avatar message' )
- reading a book using hand motions (? not confirmed yet as an actual app)
- raft game (confirmed)
- mine kart game (a la Indiana Jones) in which you collect balls by jumping over things, and ducking under things (not sure if this all belongs together, but I'm guessing)
- kart style racer (could be the driving game above) with all the usual trappings including four player, boosting, ramps, shortcuts, stunts, uses the xbox live avatars
- some kind of disney game (or, maybe more likely, the kart game is made by disney?)
- star wars game with light sabre, force powers and darth vader
- a yoga style game (as was reported before)
- a sports style game, with hurdles, javelin, bowling, beach volleyball, soccer (which is presumably just penalties? including goalie stuff) and running
- interface with the social apps (Twitter)
- select movies (and browse forward as shown in the new microsoft trailer)
- kinectimals (shown at least four different large cats that the player can interface with)
- dancing game for up to three players
- support for video chat interfacing with the Kinect
- uses a glowing ball cursor that can be moved around, as general selection cursor in general, also for selecting apps (sounds like a good idea)

So vents directly above the CPU cooler to facilitate cooling. Hopefully that's a very low RPM large diameter CPU fan (92 or 120 mm)

Also, it looks like the front is wider at the top and bottom than in the middle. IE - forms kind of an hourglass or "X" shape when viewed from the front. This is more evident in the flash video.

Edit: Apparently, the newly designed xbox360 is meant to sit vertical, the design just doesn't lend itself to a horizontal position, with the slanted lines and cooling vents. They really should have gone for slot loading then.

Disappointing if I can't stack it with other home theater equipment/Wii. And I'm glad no slot loading, I absolutely hate slot loaders. Have gotten more scratched disks from them than just throwing them on the coffee table. Never loan out CD's or DVD's to friends with slot loading players anymore, that's just asking to have my disks scratched.

I cringe everytime I hear one being loaded and hear the dust covers scraping over the disks.

SB

Only thing that interests me is the UI control with Kinetc.
Those games seem just too simplistic and kid oriented.
Hopefully they show something more advanced at the conference. Maybe when Kinect complements traditional games, it will be used the best. Fable III could be interesting.

Edit: Never had any scratch on my PS3 or Wii discs, though that may be because I mainly use Blu-ray discs on PS3 that are supposed to be more resilant to scratches than regular CD's and DVD's, and for Wii... well' I just haven't used that much.
You sure slot loaders scratching disxs isn't just a myth based on car stereos with slot loading players? I can imagine the discs getting scratched in car for other reasons than the loading mechanism.

.

Yeah, I want to sign in my profile by walking into the room and quick launch games by saying their names.

I'm pretty sure in Fable 3 you'll be using Natal to navigate the world map and also for the 'touch' mechanic. Will add a significant overhead to the game though (10 to 15% of system resources) so I'm wondering how non natal users will accept that their game has to has crappier graphics to provide Natal support.

It's not just the BluRay discs - we watch loads of DVDs, and never any issues.

As for Kinetic games, I'm interested in the dance game, but so far not really any of the others that I've seen. But I haven't seen footage yet of all the games/parts - it would be very interesting to see the bowling and beach volley for instance to compare to how they play on the other motion controls.

pretty sure it's flat top and the angle is just on front so horizontal shouldn't be a problem

Cooling looks more prominent on the side though - if it's stacked, it'll definitely want to be on top from the looks of it. But we'll see. I still have a launch 360 with 20GB and without HDMI, so I'll definitely consider a Kinect bundle.

I'm going to make an official Microsoft E3 Conference thread now though, as this pre-conference discussion and predictions thread wil have run its course in about half an hour. ;)

EDIT: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?p=1439589#post1439589

Go ahead! I'm only going to make threads for the platform holders - the rest can go into game threads imho.

My expectations for Sony tomorrow:
- Kevin Butler. Maybe not doing the full presentation (though I do think it could work, but probably not)
- lots of games. Really, very, very many. Including Dead Space 2, apparently ;), but also of course the first party stuff, new stuff from Naughty Dog (Jak & Daxter maybe? Seems very likely, or otherwise at least something like it), LBP2, some Killzone 3, inFamous 2, Gran Turismo 5, a few 'available now' on PSN surprises probably including Dead Nation by Housemarque, Last Guardian, finally the MMOs (Agency, Free Realms, Final Fantasy XIV at the very least, with release dates), the Rockstar exclusive and probably one or two other 3rd party stuff, MAG DLC shown briefly. Also the next thing from the Warhawk team. Resistance 3 maybe? Very hard to guess at this point - it may be announced to be postponed for 2011 instead, not sure. Maybe Ubisoft will show Beyond Good & Evil 2 (I can dream but it suits a Sony presentation, and they had Assassin's Creed 2 last year). Edit: Motorstorm 3 of course
- 3D stuff, but briefly because it doesn't demo well, which is why they've been demoing so much beforehand
- the Move stuff: the games we've seen shown briefly, a few Move surprises, and definitely a few small demoes of both 3D and Move support at the same time, though again brief that can then be tried on the show floor. Support for Move in XMB, but not as neatly integrated probably as Microsoft has.
- firmware upgrade stuff, but I really have no idea what, apart from BluRay 3D support which will probably go live during or just after the show. Could be PSN+ type stuff like game purchase subscriptions or XMB cross game chat, but I am actually more expecting things like the storefront rewrite that allows other parties to sell through it directly, even across different platforms. It may extend to media stuff (music, video), which I'm expecting to see some more of also.
- Move integration in Home. Not sure of this, but it would make some sense. You could be forgiven to think they may have given up on Home, but the recent improvements have been significant enough to believe that they'll continue to support the platform.
- everything seems to point to a PSP2 launch, though I have a hard time imagining one.
- hoping that if they do statistics, they do it in LBP2, like the first time they did them they were in LBP1, but we'll see.

What would surprise me:
- Right now I'm expecting them to be behind Microsoft's efforts for integrating move in the XMB, so I'd love to be proven wrong.
- PSP2 - they're in a difficult position. I have no idea what to expect here to be honest, and I almost wish Sony could focus fully on the PS3, but the PSP still did really well, so I'm kind of expecting them to bring a PSP2 to the table anyway. Their Go experiments would suggest something that does in fact support dual analog sticks (because they experimented with the DS support over bluetooth which seemed a success), while at the same time having a touch-screen. Backwards compatible with PSP, at the very least to some extent, and available in Phone and non-Phone version to show they finally have the different departments working together.
- what would be very unlikely is that they do a GT5 presentation and at the end they suddenly show that the game is finished and hand out copies to everyone in the audience. It would definitely steal the show though.
