E3 2010: Pre-Conference Discussion & Predictions

Josh, you're reading/quoting me out of context. I was replying to the rumored $10/month price for PSN+ pointing out that would be similar to Live's official monthly fee, not 'slagging off' Live.

It be more than twice what xbox live is going for

Can't anyone read anymore these days? There is a rumor that the official, Sony set monthly rate for PSN+ would be $10/month. I'm just pointing out that the official, Microsoft set monthly rate for Xbox Live is currently 6.99 euro. Yes, you can get it cheaper, but that's not the point, is it? *sigh*

Rumor: Virgin Gaming to offer online game tournaments
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/01/virgin-gaming-to-offer-online-game-tournaments/

Virgin Gaming may not be ready to officially reveal its operations until E3, but a bit of sleuthing has shown that at least part of its business likely will be online tournaments for popular games -- with cash prizes. MaxConsole found that the VirginGaming.com domain is administered by Entertainment Tech, the same company that runs WorldGaming.com; a site that allows members to compete in PS3 and Xbox 360 games for money. In addition, a call by MaxConsole to Entertainment Tech's Toronto office reportedly was met by a "Welcome to Virgin Gaming" greeting.

And if the rumor is true PSN+ would be significantly more expensive than the most expensive option for XBL:

$10/mo is 40% higher than the stupidly high XBL monthly option ($7/mo).

$10/mo is a whopping 250% higher than the typical XBL fee ($4/mo)

$10/mo is a 400% more expensive than getting a Live card on sale at $30 ($2.50/mo).

Of course if $3.00/mo difference for the most expensive XBL option isn't really significant then the cost of Live itself is also trivial and insignificant to begin with. Which of course is counter 5+ years of rhetoric. The fact PSN *may* be charging a fee at some point cuts decisively into the rhetoric and also raises the question: What is Sony offering that is 40-400% better than XBL?

This coming from a gamer who thinks it is unfortunate when gaming companies sell MP games and then also want extra cash, especially P2P, and can only  at the idea that PC gaming unfortunately set an example that, you know, MP games (with dedicated servers, voice chat, friend lists, leaderboards, etc) can be hugely profitable w/o monthly fees.

If I understand Arwin correctly, he just thought about this:

rumor: PSN+
Fee/month = 10$
Fee/year = xx$ << 12 * 10=120$

Why? Because MS have the same system with

XboxLive
Fee/month = 7$
Fee/year = 40$ << 7 * 12 = 84$

So we don't know at all how much PSN+ costs, but the rumored 10 $ per month could sound worse as it is in reality, as we don*t know the context of this rumored price yet...

And if the rumor is true PSN+ would be significantly more expensive than the most expensive option for XBL
I think Arwin's point is more that the actual price people will pay will be less than the official price, just as it is with XBLive! So the best price may be 40% up on the best Live! price, about $45. And all in all I don't think $45 is too much to pay for a free service. Oh, hang on... :p

The problem is even if we take $10 to be worse case senario its still $3 a month more than MS's worse case senario. Which means unless Sony is going to discount it so heavly that they pee blood the xbox live option will be cheaper.

Assuming the pricing is true, there is no way to compare both schemes just because we don't know what exactly're included in the bill.

Yes, if the PSN offering includes games, it becomes vaguely better value, excepting when the games are unwanted. But if all the games smell and aren't adding value, it'll be costing more for less service, as the online gaming aspect is already free.

Except I was comparing the $10 to the 7 euros we pay over here, which is even a smaller difference (and at some point not very long ago wasn't a difference at all). Of course, things don't often translate that well from dollars to euros, but then one of the first online retailers I found actually offered a year for 38 euros, but a month for 10,95!

Anyway as said, the point is moot until we know what we are paying for. Right now the rumor is about something else completely, i.e. not online gaming, but actually 2-3 games a month from PSN, and perhaps cross game chat (this is actually not so unlikely a proposition because remember they removed voice in public spaces in Home, because it was too heavy a load on the servers, whereas it is still there and works in the personal spaces, and also still works with up to 64 users).

Code:
12 Month Gold - $49.99
3 Month Gold - $19.99
Month-to-Month - $7.99

This is off the usa site if i go to renew my member ship.

The rumor is that important features like cross game chat and party chat wil be partof the package for charging more.

If we look ms has multiple options that put you at $8 , $6.60, and $4.16 ad these are worse case figures

Not to mention that if you already buy a lot of PSN games you won't be getting a ton of value. The first season of Qore gave me a bunch of old PSN games I wouldn't have bought, which added its value. The second season added games I had already bought, because in late 2008/most of 2009 I was picking up everything, so it was much less interesting.

Yeah, E3 is around the corner - the compositors and sim guys are kinda stressed around the studio ;)

Actually the rumor is that all users will get that. They would get raked over the coals if they did try charging for it.

There are at least 2 Premium PSN rumors. They contradict each other. One says cross game chat is free, while the other says it's in the premium package. :)
