The problem isn't 720P or 1080P, but that nearly all "720P" sets actually aren't 720P but something along 1368x768. And that means, that all content pushed to the tv at 720P gets rescaled, and often also overscanned into the display.

A lot of 1080p also overscan by default unfortunately.

True true... but a lot let us disable it at least. I still don't get why it's still in existance anyway. I mean, with analog signals it made sense, but with digital TV and everything else, there's no good reason to still have, much less have it mandatory.

Call of Juarez The Cartel is next on the list I think. Should be a more interesting comparison than EDF. :p

Really? I'm pretty intrigues here... can you anticipate us something? I remember the ps3 version was behind enough to 360 version... hopes to more close performance now...

It's still behind in a couple areas, but the handling of resolution seems better this time around. They're still using a custom edge filter, so I'll have to do some digging around for a good shot for analysis.

Well if we talking of an improvement like FEAR 3 it's enough for me. I was surprise how handle FEAR 3 compared to the previous chapter, the differences are not so huge to complain for something on the ps3 this time. Of course, on 360 remain more 'flawless' but I mean, at the end FEAR 3 use high buffer with 720p native+QAA, if on the ps3 tend to run worse in the chaotic situations, we talking of the normality of the things, lack of edram it's not priceless... I hope will see the something of similar for call of juarez.

An update about Call of Juarez, first screenshot comparison on the net http://www.lensoftruth.com/head2head-call-of-juarez-the-cartel-screenshot-comparison/1/
Interesting to notice some difference here & there: for now I see better texture resolution in the long distance on the ps3 & a more pronunced used of SSAO too (a la LA Noire to my eyes). Other that there aren't so much to notice... maybe a more deep use of the light on the 360 but here it's just an impression gives in a single screen. Ah, of course finally not meaningful differences in the sharpness from the two version confirmed the increase of the native resolution on the ps3. Glad to see how improve the developers thanks of its passion in the job.

Well yeah the PS3 version now looks on par (if not actually a little better) but at least from what I've seen I wouldn't call Chrome Engine 4 an improvement in any way compared to BiB or even the first game...The Cartel looks so bland that even me that I generally don't concentrate on the negative aspects of a game's visuals and try to be almost always positive can't tell a good thing about it except that the frame-rate at least on 360 looks smoother with no tearing when compared to BiB - besides that the textures, lighting and IQ are clearly worse than the two previous games...also what's up with that horrible looking motion blur and fog in the forest? the forest levels in BiB looked amazing.

What I'm trying to say is that in situations like these where parity affects quality are no way showing an improvement or passion for their job from the devs side.

Surely the art & the level design seems a step behind but technically I can't see so much worsen things compared to the previous... if we talking of stylish or design etc etc well it's an another matter. By the way I don't think the choice of design are all responsability of the general developers... everyone has its roles, if the game changes in worse in terms of gameplay & setting surely not depends of the passion of the works for the graphic developers...

Al,you wrote this one?It seems a bit different than usual but it's great read.
Yeah...AA solution definitely gets rid of the jaggies.Possibly FXAA?

You weren't kidding

Lots of cut backs on ps3..

I see their custom aa looks very nice in screens but watching the videos there's tons of shimmering..

:???: A part the horrible downgrade of the water (a shame imho, I think a more smart & 'artistical' solution would been more reasonable, than cut without to think an alternative way to avoid a flat 'empty' surface) talking of lot of cuts appears a bit overreacted to me... I think the more pixels count something afterall... by the way the real problem remain is incosistent fps in the shooters session... very similar to the prologue chapter but at least the developers have tried to push other aspects on the ps3.

I'm most interested to see how this engine handles running Dead Island. I can't wait to play that game, so I hope it turns out ok.

I'm only able to read the first page at work, other than the slight boost in resolution and texture streaming, so far it looks like most of the cut backs are on the ps3.
