if you take a look at the perfornace of S8 vs Nvidia's 5700 card (not ultra) and lower) you will see that S8 is NOT as weak as you think in DX9....actually it is very impressive for the state the card was in....

Where can I see such results? I saw the S8 beating a 5600 but did not see the S8 benched against a 5700.

Also, reread what Hyp-X said and you would see that the Volari isn't as bad as you think.
I'm sure the Deltachrome would find a niche in the low end/OEM market.

One other thing to remember Ati picked up most of S3's driver team when they went joint venture with Via (SirEric and OGL Guy just to name a couple)

Eric came to ATI via the Artx purchase. Certainly though, there are plenty of ex-S3'ers at ATI. I think you'll find that AndyP and Dio were as well, as I believe Paul Ayscough Director of Marketting is.

You'd think that DC would cost peanuts to produce, given that it's ~70M transistors. But then again, why would they price the S8 at $200 then? You'd think they'd undercut NVIDIA/ATI, price the S8 near 5200 Ultra/9600 non-ultra levels where it would be extremely competitive... but apparently, this isn't the case.

Oh well. Maybe next time.
