Dark Souls

I think if there is any game I get after I am done with R3, it will be either Demons Souls or Dark Souls ! I will just wait the others out till next year !

Jesus this game is hard. I don't remember Demon's Souls starting out quite this brutal. I think I'm going to start over with a different class. The thief is just so friggin useless against multiple enemies at the moment, and I've also wasted a ton of items because I accidentally tried to attack with the square button.

 Hi 5 ! I ended up drinking the damn potion right in front of the enemy a few times too. Ico's attack button is also square and I just came out from that game.

Oh ye of little faith.

He did kill me a bunch of times though. But I did managed to kill him eventually, and got something good out of it.

I am still fooling around the starting area. I think I will restart. Was told:

The easiest class is
knight

The best gift is
master key. It allows the players to open locked doors to secret rooms with advanced weapons and armors, including magical ones.

Will probably keep Wanderer but change my starting gift.

I started as a Warrior, which is still going well.

The gift I choose was
the pendant. Although it hasn't been much use. I'm hoping it's story related somehow. That master key probably lets you open up all those doors I haven't been able to open. I should be a great gift since most other gifts can easily be acquired anyway.

Is this game a typical Japanese festival of pain where you die over and over and want to break the controller? Peoples comments on the game seem to be good but I'm just not into that level of frustration anymore. I passed on Catherine for the same reason, so I'm wondering if I should just skip this game as well.

For some people it's probably that type of game.

It's weird, I've broken plenty of controllers, but never on Demon's Souls. Part of learning how to play it is just excepting you'll die a lot.

The game is great though, for the most part. It still suffers a bit from not explaining things, a bad lock-on that won't switch targets reliably, poor camera, and occasional framerate drops.

I just beat the third boss. It's going surprisingly well. I haven't died and not be able to make it back to my souls. I probably have that very powerful sword I've picked up along the way to thank for that.

Awesome game, loving it mucho! Of course I knew I would...

Have not had the time to play it yet that I would normally hope for or expect; work keeps keeping me away. Hopefully some time this weekend I'll be able to address it with a non-stop fourteen hour gaming binge like it deserves. Right now I've spent like 12 hours total and accomplished not much at all. On the verge of defeating the second boss though.

It's too early for me to tell whether this game will be easier or harder (it seems harder), and the story seems even more beyond my grasp... though hopefully it will flesh out more completely as the game goes on.

@ Carl B. What starting class did you choose?

I am kinda missing an area like the Nexus, where you can interact with the NPC's. Maybe there is an area like that later in the game. But right now the NPC's are scattered throughout the world.

The game keeps just piling items on you. Shields especially, I must have about 15 of those in my inventory, with many duplicates. I hope there is something to off load all that stuff.

I started as the Wanderer. What soul level are you at? I've been grinding enough that I definitely have enough junky armor and such. ;) Honestly I tossed everything such to be down to three of the same item or less. I find it a bit of a bit of a disappointment that it seems you can carry an unlimited load this time around - it made endurance a more important stat last game.

Dark Souls - Prepare to die.. It's sounds like a hard game, wich you will die alot.
The last review I read said; Dark Souls: I hate this game! Verdict; 5 (out of 6)..

Well, you should try out either this or Demon's Souls, I think.
I usually play games on easy myself, because I want the experience rather than the challenge. But Demon's Souls were special, whenever I beat a boss and a level, I had the same feeling as when I beat a game..

And when I died in that game, I didn't feel the same frustration as usual - I have to do most over again, wich is usual.
But the DS-game also has a strange death-mechanic.. If I manage to get back to my bloodstain, I will have twice as many souls, than if I had completed it without dying there.. So that becomes a goal in itself, aswell as progressing.
And there are other rewards, when I manage to get back to life.. i.e. I can summon other dead people into my game and help me out, etc, beeing dead I can invade to take their soul, or help other players out in their world.
The game's atmosphere is also really special, not that many dark fantasy games out there nowadays, but the Demon's Souls pulled you into that world perfectly.

You can also watch ghosts of other people struggeling in their worlds, sometimes you initiate this yourself, by examining their bloodstain, wich shows you the last few seconds of their life.. Other times you can see can see ghosts of people playing in their world, rubnning or fighting, before they shimmer away again.

It's a hard gameand sometimes it's frustratingly hard to make it hard to progress onwards, but it's much more rewarding than most other hard games, I feel like.
And there isn't anything else out there in the genre remotely similar to it, so if you havn't tried either out, I think you should see if you can get a hold of either the old game or the new one, and try it out.

I'm waiting for my Dark Souls copy in the mail.

I started with the Wanderer Class with the Master Key gift. The Scimitar is a good balance between speed and power especially when used two-handed.

"Enjoying" the game so far but I'm still trying to get used to the closer camera.

I restarted the game. Same exact build as you. Only level 15 now. Combat is really satisfying so far.

I think I am at the same place Cornsnake killed the equivalent of the Red-eyed Knight.

I sent some of you the Dark Souls GAF chatroom just in case you need to vent . Looks like some high level players (lvl 44) are having a hard time dealing with an advanced grunt.

EDIT: I have the strategy guide now. The maps chapter is somewhat confusing, but the stats and items chapters are very useful.

If you are familiar with Demon's Souls, you should not die too much at the beginning. You'll need to be proficient at melee, and also running away. ;-)

I completed Catherine on Easy. It's not frustrating at all. There is also a Very Easy mode.

Really I had no idea ! Damn I didn't buy it thinking its something I won't be able to complete  ! Time to scourge for copies once my marriage gets over(and my game too :D ! )

On topic, is Dark Souls more difficult than Demons Souls ? Or are they both same once you play well ?

I am not sure but I suspect Dark Souls is more challenging because the bosses cannot be cheesed anymore.

Dark Souls is slightly different from Demon's Souls, but if you are good in one, you should fare well in the other.

I think I'm level 20 right now. I've been putting most of my souls towards strength and dexterity. It is kinda weird to be able to suddenly carry everything after all those trips back to the Nexus to store things at Stockpile Thomas. I feel like I should be able to sell that stuff to vendors.

I think I am at the same place Cornsnake killed the equivalent of the Red-eyed Knight.

The Black Knight guarding a treasure?

I can't wait to get the guide. I already feel like I'm missing some things. I've been poisoned, and I faced enemies that can cause bleeding, but I haven't got a cure for either of those. And for the same reason I've been buying stuff I'm not sure I'll need, but I'd hate to be without it if I do need it.
