Dark Souls

How good is this?! I'm just at the "take a breather" bit after the tutorial mode. Feels sssooo good! Nice to see gfx have improved quite abit over DS. Textures look very nice, and all has a nice consistent look to it. Framerate takes a hit at times but seems no different to DS. So much to play at the moment! New baby, trying to move house, work...............

Both Demon Souls and Dark Souls arent exactly 'hard' difficulty wise...they just require a certain degree of concentration and awareness from the player, once you are able to do that the game becomes much easier but the moment you lose concentration you start getting into trouble.

Has anyone tried to be summoned?

I just wasted half an hour standing around waiting to be summoned at the last boss I defeated. I wonder if summoning is linked to the covenants somehow.

I think I'm level 20 right now. I've been putting most of my souls towards strength and dexterity. It is kinda weird to be able to suddenly carry everything after all those trips back to the Nexus to store things at Stockpile Thomas. I feel like I should be able to sell that stuff to vendors.

Yeah, they might as well stop dropping dup items once we get the repair tool. Cluttering my menu with the same 10 items is a bit of a nuisance. Selling to vendor probably makes the game easier, but perhaps this option is great for late stage game.

The Black Knight guarding a treasure?

Yap ! [rub hands]

I can't wait to get the guide. I already feel like I'm missing some things. I've been poisoned, and I faced enemies that can cause bleeding, but I haven't got a cure for either of those. And for the same reason I've been buying stuff I'm not sure I'll need, but I'd hate to be without it if I do need it.

Endurance provides bleed and poison resistance. My DEX is 14, so I throw my points at STR, END and VIT.

I'll type in more info later. The guide helped me
find a secret path before you see the knight. Also the master key opened a gate to a high level monster more powerful than the knight. Got chased for a while while laughing maniacally. I mean what else can I do ? ;-). That master key feels like a sadistic trick on me so far

I heard there is some drastic change to network tech. Some tech restrictions apply now. I am trying to find out more. Looks like many people are still trying to know and understand the game, which is part of the excitement. ^_^

Feels like we have discovered New World.

Folks, important explanation about endurance stats and equipment load below:

Not really a spoiler but Xbd and Yemeth seem particular about enjoying the game "as is", so I spoiler tag the post.

According to the guide...

Endurance affects stamina, total equip weight and all sorts of resistance. If equip weight is < 25%, you can roll faster and stamina recovers faster. If equip weight is < 50%, then it's slightly slower, so on and so forth.

You have a limit on total item space. You'll have to manage your inventory at some point. Trading items is possible later in the game via assorted mechanics. ^_^

Blimey, this is tricky! any hints or tips for which way to go from the nice campfire? up the steps or down the steps? and what do i need (other than someone holding my hand 8)

I dont like how you look like a corpse when undead, I'd have preferred to have the glowing aura around your character when you are in soul form in Demon's SOuls.

Up the stairs ! But the right one. The wrong one will lead you to the graveyard with skeleton warriors. They are too tough at the beginning.

I agree ! After customizing my character's look, I was a little shock to see my man "Larry Ellison" becomes a zombie.

Appreciated! :)

I am curious as to what the endurance/equipment tie-in might be though. Really the thing I am most intrigued to find out is whether and what the tangible ongoing effects of being human vs hallowed might be.

Lol...I just realized that my character has a female name.
I earlier wanted to make a female character and so named her Penthesilea (the amazonian queen) later I changed it to a male knight but forgot to change the name

Hehe. I figured that might be the case.
I have the opposite problem not having the master key. I've found a key, now which of the many locked doors I've encountered does it go to. I've only now started unlocking quite a few shortcuts after having found the right keys.

I do like uncovering the worlds secrets. I actually got to some very nice treasure by exploiting the world geometry in a way that wasn't intended. Only after getting there did I find the way I was supposed to go.

I am a little confused with undead vs hollow at this moment.

Well, either way you're undead - hallow the status is when you're ugly and really dead... and then there's the whole aspect about "going hallow," which is akin to going insane and becoming one of the terrors that blight the land.

What I'm curious about is whether the game tracks your time spent in either state, and if so, whether there are any eventual effects good or bad. I guess maybe I'll find out though! :) Such is the hope at least.

Ha ha, that would be this game:
http://ps3.ign.com/objects/092/092176.html

Looks like when we die in Dark Souls, we resurrect as a hollow immediately. You can use a Humanity item to change back to human form at the Bonfire.

You can collect these Humanity items along the way. Your Humanity item count appears in the top left corner of the screen.

Other Humanity uses:
It will affect item drop rate, and is related to some covenants' leveling. I suppose some covenant may require you to stay as a hollow ? Humanity can be used to kindle/upgrade bonfire. An upgraded bonfire will resurrect you with more Estus Flasks. A higher Humanity count also makes you more resilient to curses.

Yap I think Dark Souls is more fancy and difficult than Demon's Souls.

The monsters have a longer path finding range. So it's harder/impossible to trick them. They also don't react kindly to ranged weapons compared to Demon's Souls.

At the same time, they cleaned up the design. Co-op, invading are more structured. Tendencies have been reworked. Maps are far bigger.

I reckon the way to get around the difficulty is to co-op.

But something inside pushes me to go alone. I love to see myself improve, not just in reflex but also in managing anxiety during combat. I wish they will make this game 3D. I also don't mind a Move adaptation, perhaps one small level to try out.

EDIT: I think the other draw for this game is imagination. There are new concepts here and there, like Demon's Souls.

My god is this game intense. I found a big fat secret,
an optional boss,
at the
Undead Asylum
just thinking about what the game might throw at me for going there makes it all the more exciting and scary. I did die though, and again before reclaiming my souls and 6 humanity. But I also got some great loot out of it, so it was still worth it.

Defeated my 4th boss. The
Capra Demon.
Killed him on my second try. Also tried to be summoned again, but no luck there.

About Dark Souls being more difficult then Demon's Souls, I'm not sure. There are definitely some things that take the edge off of some the more unforgiving things in Demon's Souls. Bonfire spacing has also been pretty generous so far. The enemies between them might be stronger though. But I haven't hit a difficulty spike yet as long as I keep to places I'm supposed to go. Just like Demon's Souls, it's about being very careful and methodical.
