The access to healing aspect and the spell count vs mana aspects are things that make it a bit easier, IMO, if only from a proper pacing/planning perspective. The enemies themselves though are a tad more challenging though. I think I'm too early in to really have a sense as to the scope, size, or ultimate levels of challenge (soul level 21, two bosses, three "big baddies"), but I'm ready to enjoy the ride. The online multi seems thin and more cumbersome to have pan out compared to DS1 though. Beyond the trans-world messaging, I haven't had a single phantom experience yet.
I'm level 25. I'm thinking of trying some pyromancy. A few basic spells should be good for ranged attacks.
I finally managed to be summoned twice. It's somewhat disappointing though. There is very little to be gained from it, and it almost feels like cheating. The boss I fought clearly wasn't made to handle two opponents, making it very easy.
I agree that the online component seems to be very light. I don't see the ghosts of other players as often as I did in Demon's Souls. And the few messages I've left aren't being rated, even though they should be helpful. Hopefully the game expands upon it later.
I'm really enjoying the game. The world really seems to be opening up at this point. I've got multiple places to explore without being overwhelmed immediately. I've found a good cure farming spot. And I've met several interesting NPC's.
The mini bosses are also pretty cool. I've just fought something that might aswell be a regular boss.
Edit: I've yet to spend any time in human form. There doesn't seem to be a down side to it, and why spend the humility points on it when it's so easily lost?
Had another 30 mins and my god is this thing good! The world feels just so real! Scary, but real......Everything (bar the framerate from time to time) is just superb! I still find myself tippy toeing around.......not wanting to venture to far ahead, hoping a bonfire is round the next corner! The melee combat is just second to none in my eyes. Really got to think about what your doing rather than just steaming in or its curtains. The castle from the outside, when you look up and the sun sets off that nice flare, looks just magnificent and foreboding! Now back to Rage, dont want to have prolongued periods on either so i can stretch em both out, though this of course will take a much longer time to plough through, assuming i make it through. I imagine this would be a game to play over the Christmas period........
Heh heh, I hit my office today for 1+ hour to play Dark Souls while my family is partying at a friend's place nearby.
So... about the Dark Souls monsters. I think there are more mini-bosses, optional bosses, and all the unique ones are more difficult than Demon's Souls. The enemies are more bunched up together, and more aware of the surrounding, so we have to divide and conquer more carefully. The exploration does feel easier so far. The world is much bigger and full of more dangers though. Already heard a lot of complains further down the road.
It seems that you can summon NPCs to fight some of the bosses, but not all ?
I did eventually find a way to cheese the
black knight and taurus demon by climbing to high ground
. I don't think FROM Software will let me take it too far for more advanced demons. I'm at level 19 now. I feel I need better equipments, but I am too weak to use the good ones I found yet. :-/
I made a mistake above. About Endurance and resistance, it's only good for
bleeding resistance
. The Resistance attribute is good for
poison resistacne
In any case, I am sure you already know that since you can double check during the level up process.
Anyway, back to real life !
EDIT: Yeah, I am going to take this game slow too. I also haven't been a human at all since I died last time. ;-)
I bought 2 copies of Dark Souls (one for home and one for office). Unfortunately, there is a 24 hour period for uploading/downloading locked game saves to the cloud storage. That means I can't play the game freely if I forgot to take the game with me over the weekend.

I don't get it. You will need the same PS3 to continue from where u left. How can taking the copy over help, when ur saves are in the office ps3? and the cloud doesn't let you download till 24 hrs pass?
ROFL ROFL ROFL ! I laughed so freaking hard, I couldn't see some parts of the video! This is awesome !!! I can't wait to play DS in front of my nephew and niece, we are gonna roll with them pushing me to fight and me running away from every enemy ! Holy shit !
Heh, I have a friend who only plays CoD. Because another friend and I kept talking about Dark Souls, he was curious to try it out. When I logged in yesterday, I saw that he's playing Dark Souls.
I am really not sure how he takes the game at this point. I doubt he bought the guide.

Just so that you know, I was kidding, okay ! Please don't come invading when I do gwt Dark Souls ! We will do some co-op like gentlemen. We will hide in a 'love box' from Peace Walker as 'Sauron' passes us by !
If you watch that spoilerful video, you'll see what I meant by "monsters have longer path finding".
Basically, after getting backstabbed, "Sauron" chased the player all the way back to his spawn point. Even after the player reset his game by touching the bonfire, Sauron resumed from the reset and killed him.
Yet there is hope.
If you use the terrain wisely, you can nail "Sauron" without losing any bit of health.
. In addition, not all monitors behave that way. Some monsters need to guard an entrance/treasure, so they will want to go back quickly in case the player sneak past them somehow.
EDIT: Doesn't feel quite right. The Two Best Friends may have combined 2 different footages into one. e.g., The first time they were able to reach the bonfire early enough to reset the game. The second time they were too late. The monster was already in the room, or too close to the bonfire. Hence the bonfire did not reset the game.
With current sales does this mean I can finally get an Otogi on current gen hardware or are D*Souls spiritual successors enough for me to enjoy? [strike]Quick tangent, wth is the deal with amazon and 360 copies did they not realize the game was multi and simply order no copies?[/strike] To spite me it appears they finally have stock...
From talking to some folks, Dark Souls and Demon's Souls should be good enough to stand on their own. They don't have to be spiritual successor to a particular game (Kings Field, Otogi, blah). Better if they are able to break new grounds, and steal elements from multiple games !

You know, "I have never played Otogi" would have worked just as well but I found an actual answer elsewhere. Given that Otogi is one of my favorite all-time games I plan on picking this up now.

Kajii also spoke about the game's initial inspiration:
"'King's Field' was the game that sparked the idea for the 'Demon's Souls' project, but we didn’t base it completely off of that game. However, its world view and general feel naturally became a part of the basis for 'Demon's Souls.'
"We also drew inspiration from various other sources, mainly from old games and stories, but if we were to name one, it would be the game-books from the 'Fighting Fantasy' series.
"I consider my worn paperback copy of 'Titan' a treasure."
I saw one on the bridge where Hellkite roams. I can't reach it though.
I am at
Church, ready to take on the Heavy Knight(s) and Channeler. Will probably take 2-3 days to complete. Just killed off the Elite Guard and took the Knight's Shield.
Why did From mess up the invade/summon mechanic? In order to invade or summon you have to be in unhollowed form. In order to be unhollowed requires you to spend humanity points. Since humanity points are rare and there's no real benefit to being uhollowed people just hoard the points and stay in uhollowed form (unlike demon's souls where you got a lot more hit points when you reverted baack to human).
Lots of humanity gives you a higher drop rate. And you steal humanity from invaded players. Makes sense to me. You just sacrifice 1 point to go human, for the risk of getting potentially more.
edit: oh I see the problem, human players are rare, and there's no guarantee they will have used their humanity items anyway..
