Dark Souls

Japan already got it though, right?

It's the 1.04 patch that Japan did get, but we haven't gotten yet. But that patch caused more problems with summoning/invadeding, which is probably why we were never given the 1.04 patch. The 1.05 patch is supposed to fix the problems the 1.04 patch caused.

You need to find an NPC called Oswald of Carim. You can find him in the Undead Parish after you defeat the Belfry Gargoyles. Request Absolution from him. I'm not sure, but it might cost you a lot of souls. 2000 times your current soul level I think. It should be 500 times your SL after the patch, but that might be a while.

Holycow your not lying they want 44k souls for my mistake. I've only had half of that at one point in my entire playtime.

He wants 112k souls for my 2 "mistakes". Which I have, but why pay now when it only costs 28k souls after the patch? I'm not moving an inch with that many souls, and buy myself something nice from all the souls I save by waiting a bit. It also gives me time to catch up on some games I hadn't played because of Dark Souls.

Don't forget to "cash" the soul items you found in the game (e.g., "Soul of Unnamed Hero"). They can add up quite a bit.

If you rely on pyro spells like Iron Flesh, you might want to complete the difficult bosses first. :p

Getting souls is hardly a problem. Those Hero or Soldier Souls are a nice backup for when lose all yours souls and you need to repair your weapons.

I have Iron Flesh, but I never used it. It slows you down, which goes against my playing style. I want fast movement, and fast striking weapons.

Were you guys as clueless playing this as I have been? I mean, we've played it every Tuesday for 4 or 5 weeks now. We start the game saying, "where are we going now?" and recapping all the dead-ends we've got - this undefeatable boss, that impossible area. We slug our way through and perhaps chance upon a route we hadn't noticed earlier, so go thataway. Often we'll set out to get an item we can see, taking some hours perhaps to find the solution to defeat the enemies and allow us to recover said item which is all too often rubbish (the lack of character progression is kinda frustrating. Our best sword is far and away better than any other weapon but gets no bonuses, so we're stuck at the same damage :(). But I've no idea of the story really! There's no direction, or path. There's no 'quest log' that I know of, so as part of a covenant (if we are), I don't know what we're supposed to be doing, or how to get there. There's no map either, so even if we're supposed to go to some specific area we'd spend an age wandering around trying to find it. I know we've rung one bell and that was a Good Thing. The rest is just a whole lot of paths of which I have no idea where we should be going, which ways are suitable for us and which need us to be better experienced/equipped, and we spend a lot of time covering old ground fighting ever respawning foes. That just doesn't seem right!

Yap, I keep a few soul items around for rainy day but cashed the rest to level up faster.

As far as I know, there is at least one boss level where Iron Flesh will make it easy if you can deal high damage at the same time. It's one of those cheesing methods (e.g.,
fighting multiple bosses at the same time, or can't keep up with boss' movement. I used it on Sif. Killed him in 2 tries.
).

Very often the slowdown just gets in the way. I think Flash Sweat (Fire Protection) is more useful in general.

What armor and weapons are you using ? You should have an easier time as the character levels up, and you find better equipments.

I learned a lot just by asking around, and reading the net.

In general, magic and fire attacks are about 3-4 times more powerful, and less risky. If you want an easier time, you can mix spell attacks with melee. At the same time, use a bow to lure enemies out selectively.

After 1.0.4/5, melee damage should scale better compared to spells.

Dark Souls is huge. There are a lot of hidden levels. You may miss 'em if you don't read up, or pay attention to the user messages.

There is not so much a story but conversations/relationships with the NPCs. It's like in the real world where you just joined a company. There may be existing politics/under-current that you're unaware of. You have been summoned to do a job. You'll just have to pick out the tone, read the body language, ask around to navigate. Naturally, there could be multiple versions of truth (ala Rashomon).

If you find yourself lost, seek help! The game is designed around community help, which includes asking on forums or looking at wikis, and the in-game functions.

After the first bell, you should be heading down - to the lower undead burg. There aren't a lot of side paths from there, you just have to keep heading down and beating bosses until you reach the second bell.

What armor and weapons are you using ?
Drake Sword. Longbow. Leather Armour mostly that we started with. Have some thief armour that is lower protection but adds poison resistance. Have Elite Knight Armour that we sometimes use some pieces of though it slows us down a bit, and heavy boar helmet. Only even with these on, the difference in protection isn't much. The items we've found after getting these a few weeks ago are inferior - brigand armour and knight armour and Someone's Sword and stuff.
Not that I should have to spoiler that because everyone else is well advanced! :p

You should have an easier time as the character levels up, and you find better equipments.
The equpiment doesn't get better. When we were using bows (started at planning to play a ranged fighter/ranger) we levelled up and put points in DEX giving a little more damage, but there's only two types of bow so far. Now using sword, we get zero advancement in damage. We can fight the early skeletons and kill them in one hit since getting that sword, and they don't seem to do as much damage. I don't know if general physical resistance increases with level.

Yeah. Of course having already started a character intending to use ranged weapons, that's not much of an option. We just bought Soul Arrow and used that and were impressed. It was by chance we discovered that those 30 shots regenerate at the fire, making it far more useful than arrows whihc seem to be mostly for getting people's attentions and cheesing bosses. However, unable to try magic earlier, we've invested 27 points in DEX, STR and END...

They don't really guide. "Bonfire ahead" and "praise the Sun" doesn't really tell you when you should go take on ghosts and what you need to fight them. ;)

So far there's no obvious story coming from the NPCs. There's a few imprisoned folk, a guy with a big helmet waiting at a door that won't open, and lots of baddies! There are people we rescue who talk about being on call when we see their sign, but we've never seen their sign.

Yes. It would appear the developers embraced the internet age wholeheartedly. No need to think about informing players when the internet will do that for them for free! :p

No-one's directly answered my question though. Did you lot also feel lost and clueless and went to look everything up online, or did you feel like you were progressing to a plan and had a good idea what was going on and how to progress?

There were only a few occasions where I didn't know where to go, later in the game. I always knew the goals - you're told about the bells, and you know the first one is close when you enter the parish and can see the church. For the second, you are told it is in blightown, and it's a matter of exploration - exhausting the options available to you, seeing which areas are at your skill level, and what rewards you get from previous battles (eg the lower undead burg boss gives a key to the depths which makes it the logical progression), to find it.

The story mostly told through the NPCs. You have talk to them frequently to get the most out of them. But even then there are long stretches without advancing the story. If it's anything like Demon's Souls then the actual plot is minimal, but the interactions with the NPCs are more interesting. Dark Souls is nothing without a bit of paranoia, so be careful which NPCs you trust.

Bows are terrible, they do too little damage and good arrows cost too much. It'll probably be awhile before you can make a sword that's better then that sword. Good DEX scaling weapons are a bit rare early on.

The only time I've looked up where I needed to go next was after ringing the first bell. After that it was hinted at well enough until where I am now.

Bow is only useful for luring enemies out one by one. At the moment, the DragonSlayer bow is the only one that can cause massive damage and knock back, but it needs extremely high strength.

Completed
Painted World and Valley of Drakes. Got screwed in Darkwood. It looks like Alvina refuses to talk to me after I killed Sif ? I was looking forward to meet Shiva the merchant. :(

Since I couldn't get the cat to do anything, I decided to hit it with my Iaito. She yelled at me and disappeared forever. Good bye fog ring and backflip ring.

I could have gotten fog ring from Hawk Girl but I didn't have Egg Vermifuge with me at that time. :(

Did answer Alvina's first question with a yes? If not, you won't be able to join her covenant.

The tree lizards in the Darkroot Garden drop Egg Vermifuge.

It never dropped any egg for me. :(
I only found one in the painting.

Yeah I answered 'No' thinking that I could join her later
I was getting tired of that rude cat anyway. Felt good to slash her mouth and hear her scream.

I'm glad I answered Yes. I knew I had to answer Yes beforehand. A good thing to because I couldn't follow what the hell she was saying.

I have the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring almost always equipped. Together with 22 humility I get plenty of rare drops.

27 in END is right. The more the merrier until 40.
27 in DEX is great for Uchigatana, Iaito, Shotel, bow and one or two unique weapons.
27 in STR is only good for some heavy weapons later.

In the Souls games, we have to adapt our strategies to the encounters. That is why there is no class boundary. A lot of people have both melee and casting skills. Pyro spells do not generally scale with stats, they scale with your Pyro Flame equipment. Magic spells scale with INT and have longer range but the damage is slightly less I think. Bow has the longest range. You can hit enemies way before the lock-on. That is why it is great for luring enemies.

If you check out PvP videos, you'll see a few people specialize in DragonSlayer bow.

They don't really guide. "Bonfire ahead" and "praise the Sun" doesn't really tell you when you should go take on ghosts and what you need to fight them. ;)

Those are the usuals. But some are more interesting, "Hidden path ahead", "Attack" (Usually means attack the evil NPC, a Mimic or fake wall), "It is safe here", "Sniper spot".
