Dark Souls

Thanks for the tip ! Was only going to try
spear
in my second run since space is limited. Will adjust my attack timing first. Haven't figured out the boss' movement entirely. Died too fast in the few rounds.

I used
a spear to kill the doggies, and then switched to the Drake Sword for the Capra Demon. And a Hollow Soldiers Shield, it probably has the best stability of all the shields available early on. It should keep him from guard breaking you.

The Hollow Soldier shield is damn good, even late into the game. I think in terms of protection per kilogram it's the best shield in the game, and you can even parry with it. I also hated that stupid demon, by the way. Only one other spot in the game has caused me a comparable amount of grief so far. I actually abandoned him for quite a while and started exploring the forest instead. Unless you have some really decent gear that fight as just as much about luck as it is about skill unfortunately. If you have the Master Key you can actually bypass the sucker as well as The Depths and almost the entirety of Blight Town

You mean
DarkRoot Garden
?

And yes, now that I have
Havel's ring, using the Hollow's shield should still keep me under 25% load. Tried it on earlier but I had forgotten about Havel.

I actually really liked that boss fight.
Even the Capra Demon has a short life bar, making the fight very short but intense. The camera being occasionally blocked because of the cramped space is a bit of nuance. But as long as you can see the Capra Demon he's very predictable.

The Capra isn't the problem. It's the fucking dogs. If they manage to stun lock you right away it's over. When I went into that battle I was slightly below Soul Level 20. Had pumped mostly everything into strength. Big mistake as I couldn't block for shit and had very little health. Came back roughly 10 levels later and won. Not a very decisive victory though.

TBH I don't understand the complaints of difficulty for this game. It's dead easy and far too short at under two hours. not worth the asking price.

Just END I believe. Dex just raises attack power if your weapon has a dex modifier, and of course it also let's you wield the desired weapon in the first place (which is by far the more important aspect because unlike Demon's Souls, Dark Souls has very few weapons that scale well with your stats, not to mention the bonus is very small even if they do). The stability of your shield is also of great importance. The higher the stability parameter of your shield, the less of a hit your stamina bar (which depends on END) takes when you guard successfully. If you stamina bar gets depleted during a block it'll cause your character to stagger, if the hit is even stronger you take damage directly. I'm not sure of the fine points, because sometimes I can block really powerful blows with a tiny bit of stamina left and sometimes I can't. That's why END and VIT are by far the two most important stats in the game.

This is definitely not a spoiler, is it? Just basic information the game or at least the manual should provide you with but somehow don't.

Well, you can "sequence-break" pretty easily in the game, and there are a couple of grossly over-powered spells and weapons you can use (not to mention glitches). Knowledge is everything here. in terms of actual size the game isn't all that big.

OMG, this guy is unbelievable. He entered the
ruins
when his character was still weak.

Scanned through the 7 videos. I can't find the part where he fought
Capra
.

Not just knowledge. You need encourage and skills too, although good timing helps. ^_^

Some monsters are easier to take down if you fight them up close. They are actually harder if you pussyfoot around it.

Would love to see how he beat Capra

He must have played it LOADS to learn the way through. These speedruns amaze me. I wonder if the designers deliberately put them in? I'm sure that's the case with the Morrowind speedrun that uses a super jump skill.

The designers did put it a few things to help cheese the monsters even in Dark Souls. The "cheesing" mechanisms are not no longer risk free, but they are quicker ways to take down those bosses I attempted anyway.

I am not sure about some yet. That's why I'm curious to see how he managed them. ^_^

He didn't really cheese any bosses from what I've seen. The problem with cheese methods is they general slowness. The crazy guy also also uses humanity instead of the Flasks, and in a very calculated manner no less. He has exactly 30 of them by the time he needs them to shave of a huge chunk of the completion time.

Wow... first of all, I think I just got Silent Chief'd. Those of you who know what I mean... know what I mean!

The past 24 hours of Dark Souls have been harrowing to say the least, and I am completely in the dark as to the things I am coming across and any would-be directions I should be going in. I am definitely jumping ahead in some respects, and falling behind in others, and as such the plot-based prodding and hints I might expect to be receiving are nowhere to be found. Ah well... back into the fray...

Heh heh, I am waiting for my turn. It's inevitable this time but you can do something about it.

The boundary between NPCs and real players are also more blur compared to Demon's Souls (and other games of course) ^_^

I did it !

Thanks for your advice. I went to Darkroot Garden. Defeated the scary looking prowling demon and grinded 3 levels with the stone giants. I love fighting them and the trees ! Found the Elite Knight set and went back to beat Capra Demon.

With the right equipment, he's not that tough. Succeeded on first try.

The problem was my armor. I was wearing the Wanderer set with Hollow shield. The armor has Poise 0, so I lose my posture everytime anything hit me. With the Elite Knight set, I could continue to swing without getting stagger by bites and sword swing. It made the fight more predictable, and hence much easier.

Thank you so much ! Now I have to decide whether to continue with Darkroot Garden or go down the Depth. ^_^

Which one has more goodies ? and easier to level up ?
