Dark Souls

Darkroot is probably the best place to grind soul levels by far in the game. I suggest you buy the seal from the blacksmith that opens up the shortcut in Darkroot if you are after souls. With that seal gone you have a bonfire right next to a great farming spot. Enemies are tough, though. You may also want to explore the Darkroot Basin. The Hydra down there is pretty easy. There's an incredibly easy boss near the stone knights too. If you are feeling particularly brave you can even try to make your way to the Great Wolf Sif.

Patch 1.04 has been announced. Supposedly From is looking into the properties of the Fog Ring (thank god), some glitches that allow infinite use of magic, plus my persononal biggest gripe with the game, the relative weakness of regular weapons compared to their elemental counterparts. (it's just bull how a lowly lightning Claymore outdamages the friggin' dragon tooth which requires 40 or even 50 strength to even wield properly while turning you into a glass cannon thanks to your lack of points in END and VIT)

I hope they solve the severe framerate issues they have in some places. And the issues with the controls not responding properly, or at all. I hate having to fight for an opening that'll give enough time to heal, and then seeing my character do nothing when I press square.

To my knowledge, that shortcut is very expensive to open. $_$
Will scout the area to sample the tough monsters a bit. ^_^

You are talking about the Moonlight Butterfly ? I found a Crystal Lizard near a cliff. Will hunt it down first ! Hopefully I can kill it with my shortbow

It's expensive, but well worth it. You basically
spend 20K worth of souls for the possibility of farming 6K every 2 minutes. I imagine running around with this many souls early in the game can be a little nerve wrecking, hehe.

While I'm in Darkroot, I will prepare to enter the Depth and Blighttown. Should I invest points not Resistance ? I am level 30 now, RES should be incremented by one point every time I upgrade. My current RES point is 12.

There seems to be a delay, or one additional swing occasionally. I remember pressing R1 3 times, but my hero swing 4 times. Perhaps my trigger is loose. ^_^

 I am feeling very good after defeating
Capra. But some pointers about RES spending would be greatly appreciated. Don't have much time. Hope to make as little build mistakes as possible.

I found a great little farming spot in
the Depths.

For souls I put my soul sign down just in front of the door to the bonfire. Killing
the Gaping Dragon gives me 12500 souls. And if the host hasn't played through the level yet there are another 2 enemies that are worth a lot of souls.

While I'm waiting to be summoned I
kill the slimes for upgrade titanite, and kill the rats for humanity.

I think the general consensus at this point is that res doesn't seem to matter a whole lot. Until From hopefully balances things with a patch it's all about endurance and vitality, plus however many points you need to wield a specific weapon. Get END up to 40 as soon as possible (that's the point of diminuishing returns) and try to keep up with health as well. Drop a couple of points into strength and/or dex to wield a specific weapon, but ignore the really heavy ones for now. Use Pyromancy for backup as it's not tied to your stats in any way. You have to upgrade the fire hand with souls for it. Pure magic builds with low vitality are kinda screwed at the moment. No matter how strong your magic attacks are, the 4 Kings are most likely going to own your ass if you can't take a hit or two. Once you hit 40 END and 30-40 VIT you can start to experiment. And don't forget your gear.

Ok cool ! Let me know if the patch changes stuff. I was kinda worried about World 5 equivalent in Dark Souls.

No.
Blight Town is basically The Valley of Defilement except way easier (it even looks exactly the same), especially once you reach the bottom. It can be just as confusing and annoying though.
I'm talking about The Tomb of Giants and Lost Izalith. Lost Izalith in particular seems more like a dubious rom hack than legitimate and thoughtful game design. "Hey, let's just flood some random place with Lava so you take damage constantly, now fill it with dozens of the most annoying, hard-hitting enemies the game has to offer. Now go and have fun in there." It's stupid, it's ugly, it's annoying, and it feels like a part that should have been cut out entirely. Even the boss of that place is just a trial-and-error affair.
Tomb of Giants is just cruel unless you come well prepared. It's well designed regardless and makes you feel great once you have beaten it

Ok, thanks for the heads up !
Perhaps Izalith is the name of the level designer, hence Lost Izalith. :D

I'll check with the chatroom folks to see how they beat the levels.

You might want to spoiler tag this post. :)

Luckily for everyone I had already signed up for the gate pass in that instance. ;)

I couldn't hang around there though past two go-rounds. I am *trying* to progress this plot somehow to give me a sense of direction, but no dice. Between the unsavory options open to me, I am choosing my next "go to" spot based on what I feel should be the relative weakness of the enemies in relation to my other options. Hopefully I get some NPCs to come back on track after I pursue this angle!

Wow, any downside to getting summoned as Blue Phantom ?

Got the Darkroot Garden Crystal Lizard. I think I missed the Undead Parish one. Boss is already dead. :(

Also killed Moonlight Butterfly and the Hydra. I think the remaining bosses are all difficult now. >_<

I'm too stingy to pay up at the moment. Carrying about 8K souls. Will save up and decide later. Will monsters close the gate ? It'd be %&*)%$() terrible if a monster closed the damn gate right after I spent 20K to open it.

Where are you now ? From your previous post about Silent Chief, I'm guessing you have passed Undead Parish and went into the D. And now you're either in the "Valley of Defilement" or in the same place as I'm !

Not that I know of. If you or the host dies you get to keep all your souls and humanity, and are simply put back in the place you were before you were summoned.

Your souls sign will disappear if you stray too far from it. But a warning message will tell you about it.
