Current Generation Hardware Speculation with a Technical Spin [post GDC 2020] [XBSX, PS5]

Seagate won't be happy if they had a exclusivity deal with MS. Of course MS will likely be able to pay off any likely penalties Seagate should impose if there is a break with a exclusivity deal, but with all the money MS have it's likely no a big deal.

Come on, just because you have money, you are not spending ut willy nilly. Thats the quickest way to end up with no money. One tving i have learned about the ones that have real money, they do not casually throw it around.
Why would MS break the deal with Seagate? They, like Seagate, earn money on this deal. Why tear it up and pay a penalty to maybe earn less?

I don't see the PS5 option driving down SSDs prices. Can't really expect a ton of console gamers to pop open their PS5s to install M.2 SSDs. It's a process that amounts to way more than unloosening a screw and popping in some batteries. Its probably why MS went the route they took with Seagate.

Way more;

1) Pop off lid
2) Unscrew and remove plate
3) Insert SSD and screw in place
4) Refit and screw in plate
5) Clip on lid

How will we be able to cope?

The PS4 was significantly more steps and way more complicated including having to download specific files and stick into the correct folder on a compatible USB...and that's all before we consider the backing up of saves and syncing of trophies (etc!)

Well, in the interest of hard facts, it would be great to know the percentage of gamers who installed a new HDD on their PS4/Pros. If we don't know that number, then we can only speculate about how many may be looking to upgrade their SSD.

The fake outrage over changing this SSD would be unwarranted if it transpired that a large percentage of PS4 gamers changed their HDD, which was a bit of a pain and required a grand total of FOUR SCREWS to be removed and then put back in.

Here's the deal:

- if you had a PS4 and never bothered to change the HDD, then you probably don't really care about the size of the HDD and will be ok with the size of the SSD on the PS5. If it becomes a problem, it's really simple to add an SSD.
- if you had a PS4 and swapped the HDD for a larger one, then no problemo, this looks super easy.
- if you don't plan to buy a PS5, then you are probably one of those fake-outraging about this.

Again, it's a bit frustrating to see silly reactions for every little piece of news (on both sides!) being amplified from social media onto the forums.

Is that why some PS5 games won't work with PS4 game saves?

Oh god I forgot about that! What a humongous pain and waste of time it was!

? No idea, I'm unaware of what PS4 saves won't work on PS5 outside of the games that are getting free upgrades? If you have PS+ all your saves can be backed up to the cloud - but I was just saying that if moving to a new HDD on PS4 (and not having PS+) it was an additional step.

Never heard of that game saves generally don't work from PS4. As far as I know there was just one game that specified that the PS5 version of the game had a complete different game ID and therefor it could not access PS4 game saves.

As far as we don't get something official I would assume that PS4 game saves work for BC games, but not if the same game is "remastered" for PS5 and sold as a "new" game (which you get as free upgrade if you already have the ps4 game).

That one game cannot access the saves from another should be a normal security measurement. If the game ID changes, for the System it is a complete different game and therefor it cannot access the file for the original game.

I'd forgotten that I I upgraded my PS4 drive twice and PS4 Pro drive once. Naturally when you're adding to the install system drive you don't need to faff around installing the OS. Not to mention the other faffing of backing up from the old drive and restoring to the new one - for those of us with rubbish internet connections.

The number of people who "upgraded" was presumably fairly significant for Insomniac to low-ball the max I/O bandwidth in Spider-Man at 40% of what these stock drive was capable of.

Also if you wanted to move your games to the new HDD, you have to first back it up onto a seperate HDD with enough space for your games then once you have installed the new OS on the new HDD, you can restore the games back onto the new HDD.

I moved from my 500GB HDD to a 2TB HDD. Best decision ever.

With the PS5, I won't even have to replace my 825GB SSD and just buy extra space with a new 1/2TB NVMe SSD.

Significantly a lot less steps than the PS4.

OH MY GOD I'd also completely forgotten I had to do this, twice (Base and Pro), and this is what took hours to complete!! I'd removed that bad memory completely. I also went for a 2TB. Again, this SSD upgrade will be a walk in the park.

Redownloading everything was so much easier. But i seem to remember when i went from PS4 to Pro you just connected the devices together via the ethernet port. First thing i did was put a 2TB drive in the Pro and copied stuff over.

I suppose it depends on your internet connection. I think I was on 100Mbps then as I am now(or I was on 10Mbps ADSL) but 400+GB will still take some time. The backup and restore process is a lot better in that regards.

Once the games are copied over, everything else is normal as trophies etc. are usually sync'd when you are in the OS or you do a manual sync.

It did take an hour or two as London Geezer mentioned to do the full backup and restore. That would be due to the slow USB port the PS4 has.

The PS5's USB-C or USB-A SuperSpeed 10Gbps will be a huge time saver if people do want to backup for whatever reason using those ports.

The main difference is that in the PS4 your replacing the whole system drive, whereas in PS5 you add storage. Its a much simpler process already there.
Btw, saw the first PS5 commercial yesterday (sweden).

I don't think that has being confirmed for PS5 games. For now it's confirmed only for PS4 games using an external storage.

It seems like a dumb thing to not use the SSD that is there when you add a new SSD. Seriously waste of money on Sonys part.
