Lets say you arent a gamer and werent planning on buying a PS3, and at the time of its launch youve got HD-DVD player for $300 street or a PS3 for $400. Plus youre one of the 99% of the people who have a 720p or less display. What are you buying?
Even with my 480i TV I would get Blu Ray. Just because I cant see the higher resolution now doesnt mean it aint there on the movies. In the end the movies I bought will last longer than my TV and Im already holding off from buying DVDs.

So we're missing:
Phantom of the Opera
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Goodfellas
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Syriana
Blazing Saddles
Full Metal Jacket
Rumor Has It
The Green Mile: Special Edition

-----

Two notables IMO. Especially HP missing is big...

I'd like FMJ on Blu-ray, but I don't think its that popular.

I don't think it's so much a matter of if they come but when..

lol, who's gonna buy BR drives at their current price?

I wonder how many dell will actually 'ship', these things need to get down to at least $300-400 before they will start shipping in PC's.

I dont think we'll be seeing any "Free BR Upgrade!" deals on Dells anytime soon...

So just to sum up...

HD-DVD component players will release at $500-$1000?
Blu-Ray component players will release at $1800-$2000?

Both having a similar quality (not quantity) of titles...? And Blu-Ray requires HDMI? Is that true?

This seems to be what I'm gathering from this post... Unless I've made some mistakes, this is a rather long thread after all ;-)

Personally hd-dvd is a no brainer for me then...

HD-DVD players all require hdmi for HD output. Not decided about Blu-ray, but possibly not.

There are literally maybe just 20 titles announced for HD-DVD that haven't been for Blu-ray...many more Blu-ray exclusives. Quality..purely up to you, if those few exclusives make it special for you, that's well and good (though the exclusivity situation may change, more likely in one direction than the other, as has been to date).

BD prices will be "PS3 price"-$2000 ;) There are 3 other 06 players whose pricing is currently unannounced also.

Companies like Sony and Matsushita (Panasonic), which foot the huge R&D bill for technologies like DVD, have historically recouped their costs in the early years of consumer adoption, when devices made in their own factories could retail with a high profit margin.

[...]

Toshiba, which is preparing the HD DVD format to battle Sony and Matsushita's Blu-ray Disc this year, reportedly is having its HD DVD players made in China right off the bat, so they can carry a price advantage at retail.

Mmm, Chinese build quality and price right off the bat.

Blu-ray $1000 up, not $1800. And really, until we know what launch quantities those HD-DVD players will have and the prices of the other CE manufacturers (from both sides), I wouldn't go making rash judgements.

The lineup is looking good. :)

PS3 is definitely the console im buying after Revolution. (for the purposes of BR and M+ gaming).

1080p Televisions, will require much saving.

The Samsung BR player doesn't even support 1080p...whats up with that?

I believe the Samsung BD Player ~EXTREME!!~ outputs to 1080p. This is the $1800 one

It's strange that one format would support 1080p and not the other, especially when the BR movies seem to be using MPeg2 meaning there's no real space advantage even for 2layer BR discs.

The samsung player only support MPEG2, how can that be considered a true player? Will it only work with some movies? Will all movies use mpg2? Is it a typo?

I thought it was a Pioneer at $1800?

Hmmm...I look into that...but yeah..Pioneer would be the one to charge so high for a player. Actually...thinking about it....I think its the ~Elite~ which IS Pioneer, your right!
