Case Design of PS3

Not talking about specs, just the case design. Microsoft got many teams working on their Xbox 360 design including Astro studios.

I was wondering if Sony also sought help from third party or was the design done completely in-house ?

I suspect in-house since Sony has enough experience in consumer electronics being a CE company...

It's in house. Kutaragi mentioned that the same person who designed the PS2 worked on the PS3 or something along those lines.

Its design was led by Teiyu Goto, like both previous stationary playstations (don't know about PSP).

I agree the controller is not that great looking, but it might feel good in player's hands.

It was said that the controller was a test prototype, and certainly not something what one would call a definitive design/controller layout.

not really:

When asked if the there was a possibility the design of the prototype PS3 controller--already derisively being called the "batarang"--might be changed before launch, Chatani replied that there may be some "minor changes." However, he said that its form factor will probably stay the same.

That's what was said. I think that batarang controller will be "ok" but I'll probably get a 3rd party replacement because I would feel stupid holding that thing.

HA! me too. I was thinking the same thing. Family looking at me as if I might be holding a sex toy. j/k But I do feel the same way.

mck, seeing as this appears to be based on the similar design of the old PS1 controller made by Alps , I think you may be pleasantly surprised by the design.

It was one of the most comfortable controllers I've ever used.

I've always favored the exotic controllers. :)

People who don't like the PS3 design, how would you have preferred it to look then?
I suspect people disliking the design, dislike it only because it differs from the norm, like they would dislike almost any new deviating design.

People don't really know what they like, history has shown that time and time again.
They may say they dislike something at first, with words and their "intellect", yet deep down the subject has sparked some positive interest, and after some time they act as though they always liked the subject.

I think the PS3 case is a brilliant design. Definitely the best console design ever, by a large margin.

Squeak i've already said the rounded top or i guess the curved top . The ps3 will be under other things like my reciever , dvd player , gamecube and xbox 360 .

This happens every generation, people think the console looks ugly and over time they grow to like it or at least accept it. Frankly, the consoles could a brown bag of parts for all I care -- as long as they do their job the way it looks is moot. Same with the controllers; comfort and usability is all I care about.

If you're still looking at the console after you bring it home, you didn't buy it for the right reason ;)

But does that have anything to do with aesthetics?
And why would you put such a beautiful design under some generic home electronics equipment, never mind the heat dissipation problem?
PS3 deserves the place on top of the stack.
