Can't install Silverlight, what am I missing ?

I want to try Silverlight 2, so I tried installing it on my older rig, Win2k SP2, but it said I am missing some component and refused to install.

I can't get anywhere with it. It try to point me to some website that doesn't exist. Anyone know what I am missing ? Thanks.

Are you talking about the browser plugin or do you want to develop Silverlight software? Also, Silverlight 3 was released on July 10.

The browser plugin. Yeah, I read about version 3. But I think it doesn't support Win2k. Any idea, what I am missing ? I just installed SP4 on it, still say I am missing components.

Yep, I updated it to IE6 and have all the requirement, Silverlight still wouldn't install.

I've got another problem. After I update to SP4 and it's update, the rig managed to get infected with the conficker worm. So I couldn't even accessed Microsoft site. But I managed to clean it up and go to MS site and installed the security update.

The only problem is the security update installed doesn't prevent this Win2K from catching it again and again. I've checked all my Win XP rigs on the network and they all clean. Anyone has experience in dealing with conficker worm and Win2k ?

You know before the SP4 and it's update, I didn't have the problem. How is it that after SP4 it becomes less secure even after I installed the recommended security update for it ?

Why are you even running win2k in this day and age? Dump that old trash ffs, you probably get conflicker because you have IE6 installed on it; the world's most insecure browser.

You can't even get IE7 or above on win2k; even MS supports it anymore other than security patches perhaps, and it's surely about to get end-of-lifed soon in that regard as well.

Well, this does not bode well for Silverlight to be honest.

Exactly why I would get rid of it and insteead get Windows 7 RC or something.

It's an old rig I used for testing stuff like this. That's why I kept it around. It still work for Internet and stuff like that. I am not going to purchased new Windows for it, it'll be a waste of money.

Anyway, after lots of tinkering around and lots of security updates later, I managed to hack Silverlight 2.0 into it, and now it's working with Firefox 1.5 :) Don't asked me what I did though, I really can't remember.

It seems MS really wants you to upgrade though. Anyway my impression of Silverlight 2.0 is that it is slower than Flash but it seems to be more solid. Flash can feel finicky at times, Silverlight seems just for lack of a better word more solid, but the Pentium 3 on that rig is choking at times. Going forward I think it is a good competition to Flash.

So is MS going to bundle Silverlight with Windows 7 or is it seperate install ?

I am now patiently waiting for someone to ask how to get Silverlight to run on a Win98SE box.

Actually I got Win98 laptop somewhere. :)

Case solved. Thanks everyone.

Well most sites are still only require Silverlight 2. So I'll wait until Silverlight 3 is more widespread and required before I deal with this headache again. Somehow I doubt it'll install considering the trouble I went through to get this one done but you never know. Silverlight need to be more widespread before I install it to the rest of my rigs.

Not bundled with Windows. It's an optional component of the Windows Live Essentials package.

If it's all the same to you, install Silverlight 3 as it's backwards compatible and there's a *few* perf improvements.

I've been toying with SL3 since the release and.... it's okay, but still too slow. Flash is pretty slow too and actionscript makes me nauseous but I was expecting SL3 to be much, much better in this regard.

What I'm really liking in SL3 is the out-of-browser functionality. Cleanest implementation BY FAR. Adobe gets a lot of hype about AIR but SL3 does it right! Still too slow for my sensibilities though.

Hmm I thought MS would bundle this with Win 7, I guess all those anti-competitive stuff got to them. So I've been playing around with SL2 some more, I think I like it abit more than Flash. It's just too slow. Maybe when we get to SL7 things will be highly optimised. Flash wasn't that good out of the gate either. I think I'll skip 3 and wait for 4. I think it'll be a while before SL has any significant marketshare compare to Flash.

Anyone know what the marketshare is like at the moment between Flash and Silverlight ?

Pretty bad for Silverlight there's still a lot of unreasoning hatred for MS on the net which hampers deployment even more.
A guess of mine grabbed out of pure air is flash has >99% of the market. I've not seen one single site ever of those I regularly visit that uses silverlight, and none of my infrequent visitors/random stumbles either, excluding those sites I checked out that were linked from silverlight.com.

Personally I'd love for flash to die a fiery horrible death though, because it's the scourge of the earth as far as I'm concerned. No browser plugin in the history of mankind has caused so many crashes as flash. Nevermind it's slow, from a stability POV it's crap, plain and simple. I still get several crashes or other glitches due to flash every week, thankfully it doesn't take out the entire browser anymore in IE8 like it did in previous versions, but it's annoying enough when it happens as IE stops responding until the tab has been recovered...
