Business Approach Comparison Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox

I guess this maybe vaguely qualifies as business related...noticed Major Nelson tweeted Tomb Raider is up on XBL for download today? http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/P...acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80253510802?nosplash=1

Wiki says it came out 3/4. So that's 3 months. Thought the wait used to be 6? Good news then. I havent kept up.

Also the price is 29.99, at a glance I thought that seemed low, and it seems to be. Amazon and others seem to be charging 36-41 for it. Hell it's 49.99 on Steam! So it seems a great price too.

I guess this is MS prepping to be day and date on Xbo-1 maybe?

I rue the coming day when sales figures will be meaningless cause we'll never know how much dgital sold :(

This is interesting:

I wonder what kind of production budget the Halo series has, given Spielberg's involvement. Is it greater than say what Netflix is spending on House of Cards or Arrested Development?

Is MS or Netflix or any tech company prepared to fund say something like Game of Thrones (which probably costs several million an episode)? It seems on surface to have only nerd-appeal but GoT obviously has attracted a much broader group of viewers, willing to pay for HBO.

Halo obviously appeals to the core gamer but if they really want to go beyond the core gamer demographic, they can't limit exclusive TV content to sci-fi, fantasy stuff.
:oops:So...

Microsoft CEO takes Xbox One to Hollywood.

The pieces of the puzzle are coming together.

 Powerbox, let's play. Plop!

Game of Thrones is 10 million per episode... ten episodes a year. Its probably more lucrative than a 100 million dollar movie.

I still think a Halo movie would be better than a tv series or have the movie be a pre-cursor to the tv series. Everyone wants a Halo movie... a tv show.. not so much. How long can master chief go without showing his face on a television show?

A big part of the appeal to GOTS is the character development and rich interwoven stories. I don't see Master Chief pulling that off, more than likely a Halo series should/needs to focus on peripheral stars or new characters and tap into the Halo universe. I think this is part of the problem for video game characters in general when they migrate to other mediums; they are hard to relate to.

People like characters they can relate to, ones that seem real, ones with flaws, strengths, fears and so on. IMO this is why Japanese anime is relatively successful, the characters have a sense of humor even about themselves, they tend not to be too serious. Blood Plus as example showed a completely different Saya than what we saw in Blood the last vampire and with good reason. The movie version was a complete failure too BTW because in large part the lead was once again to sterile.

a halo tv series kinda like band of brothers would be awesome. There is a lot they can do with it actually.

A Halo series or tv show? Seriously?

Maybe I'm getting too old here. I mean, I'm a big a fan of the MGS games as they come, but I don't think I would really want to see them make a series or tv show out of it, much less watch it. That maybe used to be cool when I was a teenager, but even then, I had a lot better things to do then that. I just don't see it, sorry guys.

It would have to be a series because they have to give you a reason to keep subscribing.

That's obviously the approach Netflix is taking.

Movies are hit and miss. Well so are shows but they don't cost as much to make.

Someone else suggested MS or one of these tech companies trying to revolutionize TV should buy up rights to major sports. Well they certainly have the deep pockets for it but hard to imagine that you'd have to have a specialized device, be it a console or a future version of Apple TV, in order to watch some NFL games, for instance.

But there's no denying that sports are a lynchpin of TV programming.

Here's what seems to be a direct result of differences in business decisions between the two platforms:

http://au.ign.com/articles/2013/06/05/free-to-play-shooter-warframe-coming-to-ps4

I don't really see the business decisions difference there. If the article had stated that a dev house previously allied with MS decided to go with ps4 exclusive due to how the two handled devs, that could be a story. This is just a tale about Sony approaching a team to port a game to their platform. Its only exclusive because no one from Ms has bothered to approach them too.

The rest of the story there is editorialized to make it seem like it was due to how ma handled devs... the story doesn't bear that out.

The difference in business decisions could be Sony's attitude toward developers. We already know there is a difference in how Sony plans to accommodate independent developers.

meh. We know that there is a difference. But we do not know exactly how MS plans to go about maintaining indie viability on their platform. Theres just a lot we do not know. XBL used to have an indie channel but MS is in the process of a major organizational restructure and realignment of studios, priorites, and leadership so theres a lot of this story that is unsettled.

Iron man and the rest of his dc and marvel comrades say "hello?". If anything videogames are nothing but new age interactive comic books.

You sure?

BD1: Microsoft requires publisher, does not allow self publishing
BD2: Microsoft does not allow F2P

How is that not relevant?
