Business Approach Comparison Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox

yeah, I edited at the exact same time as your post

Still, the Dutch launch is in early 2014.. I think that's enough time for a free game or two

Does that also mean once PS4 launches a few weeks into it it will be time for a free game or two?

Considering the xb1's on ebay are going for $650+, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Looks like those ppl that brought xbones hoping to make a quick profit lucked out
http://kotaku.com/the-average-price-of-a-ps4-sold-on-ebay-is-425-so-far-1471231809
he PlayStation 4 was sold on eBay for an average price of $425 in comparison to its retail price of $399
the new Microsoft machine was averaging $481 in comparison to its $499 MRSP

Youve gotta wonder how its possible a machine a few days old could be worth less, the logical reason is they tried it & it didnt click for them unless someone else has other ideas. But surely you can return the device and get your money back? Or is that not common in the US

"More" suggests relative terms and not that the other feature is valueless. And also I said nothing about removing kinect.

That was exactly the point i was conveying. I was initially responding to the post above mine which saw a future without kinect in the box. My response was in opposition to that stating that I could live without Blu-ray (as most users of tablets, smart TV and xbox 360 owners do) but Kinect is a different story. Kinect adds value that isnt currently replaceable. Thus more value.

From the article:

...though the tracking data it offers only goes to Nov. 21—the day before the system launched.

So, no.

It looks like it was just speculators getting burned and taking what they could get instead of getting stuck with a system they didn't actually buy to own.

When you said blu ray I took it as getting rid of the disk medium completely. Most 360 users use their disk drive and probably most still want to use their disk drive to play their games on. In addition the Blu Ray is still very relevant in the market. People have Blu Ray players connected to their TVs. Not having that feature, for many it can be a deal breaker especially when the XB1 is sold as an All in One device. Kinect and Blu Ray are not substitutes to each other, so no matter how much "more" value each offers over the other there are customers who will be turned off by missing one of them.
You are one of those people that dont mind using an always connected, diskless console. For you it is more value like that and I can understand that. But you cant conclude about the majority of the market by using yourself as the primary sample. I can use myself as a counter argument since I want to have more options. But that would be pointless.

In terms of marketing, this is a new low. A public spamming system.

Have you actually tried it? All it does is open up your email program to send an email from your account.

Yeah, it was kinda cool. It's totally designed to help you convince your significant other that you need an Xbox One. Has some pretty funny Mad Libs options. New low? Naahh.

Uhhh.. Why? The email gets sent from YOUR default email account, not from Microsoft. And if you bothered to check out the choices on this mad-lib style email form, it's meant to be humorous. Just as was the mad-lib style doctor's note that MS put out earlier.

But hey, let's just bash MS and continually say that everything they do is on par with drowning puppies. Because our knee jerk reactions to a company we hate is always the best bet.

Or maybe it's just all that green that gets you so riled up. In which case, I agree.

It was that cool they've had to issue a public apology for it. Way to go MS.

I'm not saying they spam themselves, they made a sexist spam-your-wife system.

She doesn't want an xbox? Here a spam generator. Send it yourself so it goes through the whitelist.

Anyway they changed it now...

Not a single gender specific word in that mail. It could be sent from anyone to anyone, living with them or not.

It's not Microsoft being sexist here, Mr "spam-your-wife system".

The original default was very dude to chick sounding, hence the change.

I highly doubt anyone at Microsoft things this. Should be pretty common knowledge that their price difference has been a great help in establishing the 360 early on. We've done a lot of discussion about how the potential audience grows at each price decrease (given a static desireability). The lower the price you start at and the faster you can go down, the faster you can expand your audience. The question for Microsoft is how scaleable their approach is (room for cost reduction). There's likely to be a fair bit.

The Xbox 360 was seen as an inferior product to the PS3 in Europe. The only time it had an advantage was when it had a significant price advantage in its favour, and the type of Xbox most commonly sold was the cheapest which indicated it was a price conscious customer that was buying it. If they release the same machine then Sony wins by default in large parts of the world, so the onus was on them to innovate as at an equal price/spec people would pick Sony almost every time and the network effect would snowball from there.

The biggest, most drastic response that Microsoft can make would be getting rid of Kinect. That one won't be off the table for a while yet, I'm willing to bet, but they aren't ready to do so right now or very soon, that much is also clear, as the UI needs some additional work in that case, I think.

They could probably get rid of Kinect once they establish a large enough user base of Kinect users. Once they have that then it essentially becomes a 'false' choice for the majority of people where it is almost compulsory. It is kind of like the original Xbox 360 'arcade' unit which required a memory card to function. If they lower the total system price to $299 w/o Kinect then it could be an effective bait n switch for them.

I thought it's just bad marketing, but it seems to have exploded a bit too much for what it is

I agree with you. It must have been a really slow news day for this to have gotten that much attention. I think by now that MS would know to run everything through at least some sort of sounding board, twice. It seems like it wasn't as thought out as it should have been.

Though what's that old saying "There's no such thing as bad publicity"? I hope they don't subscribe to that premise.
