Business Approach Comparison Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox

Their usual tactic of buying their way into a market just seems so stale now. For once I'd like to see them actually get into a market on the basis of having the best product at the best price. It's a shame that Nokia will become the next victim of MS's Borg like intent to drive products into a bland mediocrity like they did with the OS market on the PC.

MS is in the console market because they have offered US, Canada, and UK consumers the best possible value for their dollar with Xbox 360. The marketplace has decided that already.

Anecdotal GS preorder numbers, nearly all preference polls, Amazon US & UK charts, silence from MS on preorder numbers, and the need for a FIFA giveaway deal indicate a large disparity in the ratios.

I estimate 3:1 in NA because that seems to be the going ratio floating around in nearly every poll these days. There were 2 interesting (and funny) videos that came out of PAX the other week that support this.

Thank you for confirming my translation.

There is a entire mainstream gaming demographic, magnitudes larger in its population, that doesn't post on gaming message boards or participate in internet console polls and who will preorder much closer to, or buy at launch, or later, and Microsoft has a huge advantage with them. Hope that helps.

So steam announved family sharing of your games. Do people still want to claim game sharing for the one was just glorified demos ?

Doesn't matter now what the plan was. Nor does it matter what anyone else does. Company A providing a service with x/y/z features doesn't necessitate Company B offering to the same service with the same features. We didn't have a particularly clear idae of what MS's intentions were, but they've moved on so it doesn't matter. What'll matter is what their strategy is when they do provide game sharing.

You cant be serious about polls...

I'm pretty sure the ratio in Nov NPD wont be 2:1, in fact my prediction is X1 will win the month on more supply (both will sell out, I think PS4 has more demand) even though it will have a week less on sale.

Look at all the advertising MS is ramping up...

BTW, I would like to make a poll about Nov NPD because I think X1 will "shock the world" and take the top spot. However polls dont seem to be working, any mod confirm? Or I'm doing something wrong?

I dont think so. I think core gaming is a very specific niche and it's not well served by tablets and phones, nor facebook games.

Judging by PS4/X1 preorders flying off the shelves, I think consoles still have their niche.

There are more gamers than ever, but that doesn't somehow mean consoles are going away. If "core gaming" is attractive to 20% of the people, and suddenly casual games snap up 60% of the people, it doesn't mean the 20% is no longer relevant or no longer exists.

Not with a $500 price tag they don't. IMO price matters a lot to this gaming demographic, like it does for a lot of people. And regardless of price, I don't see how the XB1 has a "huge" advantage... I think that's a big exaggeration.

Ignoring internet polls and just going based on amazon.com's sales charts and individual reports of pre-order slots, I still think Sony is shipping more units to the US and will therefore outsell the XB1. I wouldn't be surprised at a 3:1 ratio, although I think that it will be more like 2-2.5:1 in the US. I would be surprised if the XB1 outsold the PS4 in the US in 2013.

I still think they'll do well on the TV and Kinect stuff when their marketing kicks off with that crowd.

They have some unique, compelling features if it's an easy enough setup. People were buying those $399 Kinect bundles in 2010.
