Before the year is out, British Telecom, in partnership with Microsoft, will announce a deal that brings IPTV to Xbox 360.

...

In offering IPTV through a partnership with Microsoft, the telecommunications giant will be in a position to buy Xbox 360s direct from Microsoft, and offer a console fully equipped to watch and record free-to-air, paid and on-demand television content to customers, without the need to pay for a set-top-box. From BT's perspective, offering a games console as its set-top-box, BT customers will have yet more choice, and also the ability to experience the world’s market leading next generation console.

HD Ready IPTV via Xbox 360 in the UK rumours abound

British Telecom, in partnership with Microsoft, could announce a deal that brings IPTV to Xbox 360 owners in the UK.

In offering IPTV through a partnership with Microsoft, any telecommunications giant would be in a position to buy Xbox 360s direct from Microsoft, and offer a console fully equipped to watch and record free-to-air, paid and on-demand television content to customers, without the need to pay for a set-top-box.

If it's freely distributed to subscribers like other STBs for a reasonable subscription fee it can be a success.

Bad deal for MS if they're locked to BT. BT don't offer a competitive package. Many folks go with Virgin, Sky, or similar providers who do better deals. Rather than get existing XB360 to migrate to BT (which they may be contracted out of doing for many months) which might be what BT's hoping, it'll surely just limit who has the service available.

What's the BW requirements of IPTV?

It will most likley be the same as the current BT Vision package - you need a min 2mb BT Brodband connection.

Will they be bog standard 360's or will they have thier own version with a Freeview tuner and bigger HD - Obvously there will need to be changes to the software to allow for an EPG.

I can see it being 2 compleatly seperate systems combined in one box... unless they are planing on using the media centre functions for the Freeview tuner and the IPTV bits.

Where IPTV is concerned, I wouldn't have expected to have got it from anywhere other than my ISP.

Thats a BRILLIANT move by MS. It establishes the console even farther and to a bigger audience and as an entertainment system for every home.

Sony should do something similar since this is their aim

Well, the most notable difference is quite possibly that with the add-on tuner scenario, if you want to do timeshifting then you are probably tied to doing that. I believe that MS have pointed out that one of the main benefits of IPTV is that you are doing server side timeshifting, hence your console need not be exclusively capturing TV.

A client side PVR should allow them to sell the feature worldwide, and independent of providers though.

How about this...

'A client side PVR would allow them to sell the feature worldwide, to any provider that could support it'

I am sure $$ comes into play with who supports it. Or if MS and any providers go the whole Apple/AT&T iPhone route.

I like the idea software based functionality to an existing device instead of having to add a tuner card.

It depends on their business model. I believe there are third party program guide providers. In the worst case, it would still be possible to do time-based recording like old recorder.

MS's approach is really service-based (because it is tied to a provider).
