Where and who claimed it was gameplay? No one at the E3 press conference went into specific details about those trailers - only after the demo, when various people were asked directly did they say something and even then, the question was dodged most of the time. I'd like to see a direct quote if you have one.

Read page 1 of this thread ( closer to the bottom - links and quotes included ). The CEO of Sony America claimed it was Gameplay LOL

50% lower than 720p means it's running at HALF the resolution of 720p. I know your not seriously claiming that, so what are you claiming?

Read carefully.

720p is 50% more resolution than PGR3's. Take PGR3's resolution, halve it, add that back on, and you have 720p.

720p = 921600
PGR3 = 614400

The difference IMO is more than slight.

I seem to remember Sony claiming that 1080p would be a Ps3 standard ( and yes, I can link you to many sources that all state the same thing ).

Bring it on. They never ever ever said it would be standard. Sony in fact has not mandated any minimum resolution, at least publically.

No, he was talking about Killzone 2. Watch it again.

What is it with all the denail in this thread?

Easily done.

These you go, there's FIVE links, to where Sony claimed 1080p would be a PS3 standard. Man it's like you guys are forgetting all the BS Sony was spouting at E3 LOL

Well considering what 'you' transcribed on page 1 was copied and pasted (and also incorrectly transcribed) from a user submitted Gamespot 'Burning Questions' feature I'd actually suggest you go ahead and watch it again yourself and transcribe the previous question while you're at it.

The actual question asked to Tretton is as follows:
INT: "Now I know that there were some other demo's that were shown there. There was Killzone - a lot of people were excited about that. People were wondering you know - was some of the stuff real? Was it CGI? It looked so good I mean what was the sense from you. Is there some stuff in there that's computer - smoke and mirrors?"

He answered a very generalistic question with a specific example - I-8 which he had only just previously been discussing. Yes, by all means call him out for dodging the question, but he is in no way addressing Killzone.

Especially when you listen to what he follows on to with his answer:
Tretton: "It's definitely real, I guess we're pretty good at keeping secrets, because the dev kits were out there. The dev kits are very intuitive so people did some incredible things, and that's one thing that Ted wanted to make sure that everybody understood. That is real gameplay everybody is seeing out there.

Err, and I think the other advantage <interrupted INT: So it is gameplay, all that stuff is all gameplay?> It is gameplay, and I think beyond great gameplay I think we have the opportunity to tap into world wide development resource - cos when you mention something like Killzone that's of our sister company over in Europe"

Yeah so if he is genuinely answering the question with regards to Killzone, how can he possibly bring up Killzone in that manner during his answer?

The HD standard is not necessarily the game standard. These are FIVE links that show your confusion. Seriously, PS3 can play the full HD format called Blu-ray.

They mention it being a "system standard." And in the 3rd link they talk about the 1080p standard in the same sentence as the RSX.... you certianly don't need an RSX for a blue Ray player render movies at 1080p.

Do you really just not remember was Sony said at E3. They touted 1080p as a stanrd to the moon and back. Just type "1080p PS3 standard" into Google. There's really no denying this, not sure why you're even trying.

Again, I have to quote this /sigh
1080p is the highest resolution within the HD standard
The standard is not synonymous with the minimum value. It's one of the supported and standardized resolutions in the PS3 system and HDTV standard.

As stated in your splinter thread, PS3 having 1080p capability as standard does not mean all games are to be rendered at 1080p. PS3 supports lots of things as standard, whether games use those or not is another matter. Sony has made no public statement about mandated minimum resolution for games.

This is really basic comprehension, BenQ.

So then everyone's in agreement that PS3 will have at best token support, if any at all, for 1080p with video games.

In other words, resolution no better than XBox 360, and possibly worse depending on how AA works with PS3.

Everyone happy?

Let's wait for the add-on HD-DVD drive for Xbox 360 that can output 1080p in games through its HDMI connector, and the Xbox 720 with 32MB eDRAM.

The 360 is already "capable" of 1080p resolutions, but it's not the standard.

"ATI did clarify that although Microsoft isn't targetting 1080p (1920 x 1080) as a resolution for games, their GPU would be able to handle the resolution"

http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2423&p=2

1080p for a game resolution really has NOTHING to do with the kind of disc it comes on. You need something like BlueRay/HD-DVD to display movies in 1080p ( it's a question of storage capacity ), but not for games.

As I stated during E3: 1080p will never be the standard resolution on PS3, and the Killzone stuff was CGI. These things should have been obvious to everyone. I can't believe that some Sony fans were so blinded by system loyalty as to believe the lies that Guerilla and Sony were putting out. It's pretty shameful.

The PS3 will be a great system, but the X360 will stand up to it 80-90% of the time. It will all depend on the studios.

I'm not talking about disc media. As a matter of fact, the upscaler chip in Xbox 360 doesn't support 1080p output. Then, I remeber in another section of this forum ATI people were hinting the performance diff between Xenos and X1800. IIRC it's basically that at the supported resolution their performance are comparable but in higher res X1800 is much faster. Now, "capable" of 1080p res? Look at PGR3 already without tiling overhead...

Launch title... launch title...

What does PGR3 specifically have to do with 1080p? It's using a resolution lower than 720p just because they didn't have predicated tiling in the engine, and they felt that 2xAA was more important.

You really need to get a clue. I'm sorry, but I just had to say that.

You speak as if the overhead for using Xenos' tiling method is a bad thing. Given the development time to tune the PGR3 engine for Xenos, well, the rest is obvious really and beaten to death in 50 billion threads in Console, every day.

I had a discussion about it at an old thread
http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showthread.php?p=626717
so please look there if necessary. I know it's a launch game but you can't negate these points:

1. Without using tiling they could do a straightforward port of the code on a Mac devkit to the actual Xbox 360 machine
2. The ported code had 2 factors to boost the perf: no tiling overhead, smaller rendering area
3. Nevertheless the result is 30fps

You also can't negate the point that the PGR3 dev's stated they wanted to redesign the entire game engine after recieving final hardware. In the face of that kind of statement, trying to draw any performance conslusions is a little silly don't you think?

As for the KZ trailer, when a company is sleazy with a capital S, they should be called out for it, instead everyone goes in auto-defense mode. It's a BS move, end of story.
