Bill Gates: Both BluRay and HDDVD doomed for failure

One in six cable subscribers either watches or is interested in watching video-on-demand, according to Forrester Research. This number should grow as cable operators like Comcast and Time Warner Cable expand their video-on-demand libraries and adopt an ad-supported business model for on-demand videos, the company said.
Moreover, Internet video is spreading rapidly with 46 percent of online consumers watching it, and 9 percent saying they would pay to watch it, said Forrester.

Strong growth is likely to come with advances in video search and as broadband penetrates more households. Broadband is expected to be available in 62 percent of U.S. households by 2010, up from 29 percent today, analysts said.

While only 8.8 percent of U.S. households have a home network, this will expand to 40 percent of households by 2010, Schadler said. One in five such consumers streams audio from the personal computer to a stereo, and they are likely to want to stream video from PC to TV as well.

This was what i was referring to as interesting.

To all Blu-ray and Star Wars fans here's some great news. Lucas is on board with Blu-ray!!

I want to point out that a number of exciting tidbits were mentioned at the event. For example, Lucasfilm will definitely release high definition versions of the Star Wars movies when Blu-Ray makes it to market. Considering how reluctant they were to enter DVD, this is definitely great news for the future.

If the chinese start making and selling cheap HD-DVD players from day one would be more important than the porn industry supporting supportng the format :) ...

Hardly.
In the end, the format itself is what needs to succeed, and the format with backing from 100% of Hollywood will always be in a better position than the one with 50% backing.

Thinking HDDVD players will be cheap straight away, chinese makers or not, is wishful thinking.

HDDVD players will come down in price just like Bluray players will come down in price.
Just because we're hearing about Toshiba trying to get chinese manufacturers to make cheap HDDVD players doesn't mean that the same won't happen to Bluray players.

I'm not sure, but I have a feeling that then mainstream buyers rather buy the known brand players from Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony... than some unknown Chinese maker's player.
Though they are often very good quality, many still are uncertain to buy other than those big names.

But if makers like Samsung and LG are counted amongst these cheap chinese manufacturers, then it will be different.

Sure brand does take you a long way but I think the price does play a big role, it depends on how big the difference would be I guess and as far as I know most of the Hollywood studios support both camps don't they? So there shouldn't be a big difference in selection as far as movies go. Personaly I don't give a sh.. about these formats. I will not be bying any of them any time soon and hoppefully never, I think the jump is to small in tech and storage. I would rather be able to download my movies instead...

I would rather they'd be beamed straight into my brain, but guess tha's not going to happen very soon ;)

Yeah, that would be cool as hell, matrix rules.

But I find it strange that first the movie companies complain that the pirated movies out on the net are bad for bussiness and people are not bying DVDs and stuff and on the other hand they will not provide some form of on line service to download movies because there is no market.

They need to move quickly if they don't want to movie industry to become like the music industry, not to start to offer legal on line options when eveyone has become accustomed to download stuff for free, although the online apple store for music is extremely successful, which I guess shows that people actually don't mind to pay for it. These companies are so extremely slow, so definitely, the beaming into your brain idea will defnitely not see frutation for a century os so :).

Atleast the porn industry is now offering downloads of full movies in Divx for dowload, that is good enough for me for now :) and if the porn industry dictated the winner of the VHS vs betamax battle maybe both HDDVD and BR will be soon defeted by the net :p ...
