Audi RS4 vs BMW M5

Well all im trying to say is there are better ways to spend you cash. Buy the alfa and with the money you save buy a Radical, atleast than you can really use the power instead of having your 250kmph car not doing more than 50kmph most of the time because your in a traffic jam.

And what I'm saying is that regardless of traffic jams, there are always ways to have fun in a fast vehicle. Did you watch the video in the opening post? Pretty heavy traffic there. Sure, not stop and go but a high volume of vehicles. Don't get me wrong, I think the two guys in the video are idiots and driving like that is likely to get someone killed so I certainly don't condone it. Besides, there's always the track, or the weekend :D

but tell me when do you plan on using your fast car? you cant in modern traffic.

Of course you can, i use my fast car every day in modern traffic.

Dont know about the handling, but ive been hearing good things about that.

Alfa Romeo only has FWD cars out with the exception of the very limited special model they made recently, comparing a normal alfa with FWD to sporty RWD and AWD models from BMW and Audi is pointless in terms of handling comparisons.

AR is geared at being a real drivers car. Atleast, that is what I always heard..Alfa's just have passion written all over them, I'd buy a alfa 159 over a brick looking corperate bmw without a doubt.

Alfa Romeos 30 years ago where real drivers cars, similar to what BMW is today, just with passion. The thing you see with AR brands these days are pretty poorly build FWD cars, that are suprisingly slow considering Alfa Romeos heritage.

I assure you that you can put the power to use every day in a fast car, you just have to want to use it.

When i redlined the second gear in my CLK, i had broken every speed limit in norway, but i still managed to find good use for the car. Overtaking is fun with 500+ bhp, and you can allways go to a track.

Ostepop, I would totally agree with you. I use my "fast" car in traffic and I actually feel much safer knowing I have the ability to either, stop faster than everyone else, or accelerate out of a situation faster than most everyone. The insurance on my ///M is 30% cheaper than it was on my old Honda Fit (Jazz in UK) and would be nearly 50% cheaper than a standard Honda Civic. Plus the FWD is very bleh in comparison to RWD.

I drool to the thought of 500bhp! with 340 now, I can power up any hill with my mouth agape.... with 500... cant imagine. :D

How do the two vehicles compare upkeep cost wise? I seem to hear more about BMW's having problems than I do Audi's. But I hear VW's have tons of problems. Since VW is Audi (more or less) how does that affect reliability?

Note: I want a S4 (2001ish for the turbos), but am willing to settle for a 328xi.

I think the warranty between Audi and BMW (on new vehicles) is pretty similar if you plan on keeping the car for 50,000 to 100,000 miles (in the US). The only difference being BMW pays for three oil changes in that period (15k,30k,45k +1.2k if you have an M) while Audi pays for one at 5k. Both have free roadside assistance, which saves a couple of dollars on insurance.

Scares me to think of buying a used car, out of warranty, from either company.. Too much maintence costs I'd bet.

The cars they make today are all front wheel drive yes, but not all their old cars if I remember right (dont know much about their older models), they are planning new RWD models.
That sounds like something you could say of a lot of manufacturers, American, Japanese, and supposedly even Korean brands included.

yes they arnt fast, but tell me when do you plan on using your fast car? you cant in modern traffic.
This may come as a shock to you, but different countries actually have different levels of traffic and modes of operation for a vehicle. A daily commute in the states would often involve an *average* speed of 120 kph (with lots of stop-and-go in between that means a lot of quick transitions from 10 to 120 kph and almost nothing in between), and cars would generally *need* at least 200 hp mainly because of their size and weight (what the US calls a subcompact would in other countries be called a borderline compact/midsize). Of course, there are other countries where traffic congestion is such that an automotive engine making more than 30 peak horsepower would be way overkill.

Dont know about the handling, but ive been hearing good things about that. Reliability was a issue in the past but not so much anymore with the modern models.
Again, something that could easily be said about a whole lot of other brands... particularly American and Korean cars since reliability was more of a dark spot for them in the past.

Yes you still have the odd sqeeks and noises but thats because it italian, theyre supposed to make some strange noises ;)
Oh, well that just changes everything. I'm hereafter completely and profoundly convinced of Alfa's innate superiority.

Best bang for your buck imo is finding a taken care of 3000gt VR4 or Dodge Stealth RT/TT. After I got mine for under 10k I never looked back. I've had it over 170mph, it weighs almost 2 tons, has true 45/55 f/r split AWD, ECS, AWS, Active Aero(3kgt), a luxurious leather interior and plenty of power potential in the platform. It has functional but attractive styling as well, achieving a very low drag coeffecient.

Yeah they are older systems, but they work. The only thing it lacks are a user controllable center differential which does suckl; and a traction control system other then ABS, but come on now we all know real men turn those off anyway.

I've beat the living hell out of mine and haven't had any major problems with it. I do plan on dropping a new longblock in within the next 100k miles though. That's only because I'm about to pump it up over 700AWHP and I don't want any niggling issues that may have crept into my old tired block getting in the way.

Good luck finding a nice one though, I know I'm never getting rid of mine. ;-)

xxx: Just admit it, post Bangle BMW styling is a bleak, bleak sight to behold. I'm still waiting for them to design something that even approches the classy elegance of the 8 series, or E36 3 series. I won't even bring up what van Hooydonk has done. He makes Bangle look like freaking Paul Rand.

Please bring some style back to the auto world Germany, I beg you. On both knees.

3S FTW, baby! Never owned one, but man what I wouldn't give for a '99 3000GT VR4 with 19"s and in white :D

Very nice. I remember seeing one of the car mags take a '99 VR4 to a track and practically doing a wheelie @ takeoff

Wouldn't it be great to still have a VR4, but with features from the Evo (and maybe put on a diet?) ;)

Man would that ever be fun. I have enough touble in my Saturn Ion though, so me + 700 AWHP an exhibition to outer space.

Know what you mean. If I hadn't wrecked my Talon, I'd still own it.

You sir, clearly are a man who knows "what's what." lol. I tip my hat to you, if you are ever in the San Diego area I'd gladly let you take mine for a spin. =)

I find it hard to believe that in two quotes that had exactly the same criteria ( age of driver, number of miles driven per year, number of years no claims etc) that an BMW M power car costs less than a Jazz for insurance just because the Jazz cannot go faster.

I was under the impression tha tthe drivetrain had issues with too much power. Not that 700 AWHP is too much... I remember wanting one in middle/high school. I used to get into arguments about the 3000GT VR4 was better than the 300ZXTT. In the end I fell in love with the R33/R34 VSpec II (or the N1 version ).

Currntly I have a 96 G20 (Primera for the rest of the world). I am looking for something that is a little bit newer, but not too new as I am buying a house on Wednesday.

I like BMW's, and the 525 my dad has is nice. But the lure of easy HP gains from a turbo has me in love with the 2001 S4. I would settle for a G35x, Evo, or WRX Sti as they are all sedans ( the 4 door).

Hondas are more likely to be stolen, and they also dont have the benefit of BMW Assist or Onstar. I'm not kidding you. A quote from Liberty Mutual, same everything, will have a M Coupe cheaper than a Jazz in the US. It's absolutely crazy.

I love 3000GT VR4s, it was my dream as a kid to get one, but then they stopped making them new :( A new redesigned 3000GT would be a great competitor to the GT-R.

Not to get your hopes up or anything but I know Mitsubishi has evaluated putting out a new GTO (or 3000GT as it's known in the U.S.). I could've sworn I saw concept art for one not too long ago but it has yet to materialize in the form of a prototype @ auto shows.

I've also heard a lot about this. I was hearing V12 twin turbo, mid engine AWD possibly RWD.

I'm of the opinion that every mechanical/tech related corporation should have a very very high end flagship product just to show what they're made of. The Evo is nice and all, but doesn't really count.

Even BMW let the 8 series go, the NSX, and Supra went the way of the dinosaur as well. These are the products that instill brand loyalty and pride and they're almost impossible to find any more. =(

There will be a new NSX in 2010.

btw. all suck. ;)

PHOENIX -- A Lamborghini Murcielago seen in a YouTube video allegedly going 219 mph on the Red Mountain Freeway in east Mesa is owned by a former Phoenix dentist.

Robert Simyar now runs an Internet porn site for which some of the models pose on the same car featured in the video.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials called the freeway incident an "extreme violation of the posted speed 65 mph speed limit" and said they have opened a criminal investigation.

The video, which was pulled from YouTube, shows the driver attempting to break the car's previous top speed of 171 mph on a freeway traveled by hundreds of thousands of motorists every day.

"To do it in the middle of the city at 220 miles an hour -- that's crazy in my opinion," said Brian Kern, a Phoenix resident.

The driver's face is never seen in the video. But he describes how he could have gone faster if there hadn't been other cars in the way.

"I travel this very stretch of freeway daily and many times late at night just at the times this clown is racing and what if it was me that he didn't see?" said a CBS 5 viewer e-mail. "I don't really want to die."

Near the end of the clip, the driver challenges someone to top his record, a statement that produces chills for one Phoenix motorist.

"I take my son to day care and we have to drive over that way," said Kimberly Green.

CBS 5 News tried tracking down Simyar at his Phoenix mountain home without any luck. E-mails and phone calls went unanswered.

CBS 5 did locate one of the people associated with the video -- an Arizona State University student named Aaron, who didn't give his last name. He also refused to talk about the video.

After letting him know the incident was under investigation, the video disappeared from YouTube.

I downloaded the 720p version of this and wow .. he did three runs, 211, 214 and 219. Couldn't go over it.

The geographical height is a big factor, since in the thinner air the engine can't "breathe" as good as at the sea-level.

Also keep in mind the speedo on the lambo (and italian cars in general) isnt even close to the truth. A guy from a dutch site drove the only murci lp640 in holland on the german autobahn and he managed 350+ on the speedo while the official topspeed is 330kmph.
