I suppose this is dependent upon where you place the Xenon in the hierarchy of the next-generation consoles -- it's hovering somwhere around Dreamcast levels at the moment IMHO.

from most powerfull to weakest

nintendo

ps3

xenon

Diffrence between xenon and ps3 will be slight.

So, even though "specs do not matter" at the end the GCN 2/Revolution/NES 5 will have the best specs of all three systems in terms of raw performance (strongest console) ;) ?

If true, this is still just the GPU from ATI. ATI as we know is not on the top ladder when it come to process shrink, yet they keep cranking out impressive top ladder GPUs.

From what i seen of this gen, i felt that its not what you put in for big specs, but how you put in for games to shine. ;)

viva la revolution baby !!!!

Btw i feel at the end of the day all 3 consoles will look the same in terms of output

Nvidia has better feature support such as sm3.0 with much more transistors. It's inevitable also for ATI eventually, but ATI is taking easy way for the time being. Its power consumption is lower for the moment, but not sure about the future.

yeah, nvidia does have support for sm3.0, but when games come out that actually use it... will the 6800 even be powerful enough to use it at high resolutions and such..?

also, nvidia has more transistors, but the power of their gpu isn't that better than the x800 platinum., which has less,. the 6800 pulls ahead in very few instances from the comparison i read, but for the most part the x800 pl.. was slightly ahead more often,. given the 6800 has more transistors, takes up two spots, runs hotter and takes more power to use,. wouldn't that make ATI the clear-cut winner? That's just my opinion though..

btw., hello i'm kinda new., though i've actually been reading these forums for a while.. this is my first post..

ATI Technologies is expected to roll out a new GPU, codenamed R500, for the Xbox 2 in the first quarter of next year, according to market sources.

The R500 will be built using a 90nm process at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and will deliver performance similar to ATI’s next-generation high-end graphics chip, the R520, the sources said.

ATI is cooperating with Microsoft to develop the chip, but the software vendor will be responsible for placing orders with TSMC. ATI will receive royalties from Microsoft based on the number of chips produced.

In related news, the sources said that ATI has completed the tape-out of its R480 chip, which is due to launch in the fourth quarter. The R480 is being manufactured at TSMC, using a 0.11-micron process.

So much about Xenon GPU at 65nm. ;)

I thought it was the Xenon CPU that was supposed to be 65nm, as opposed to the GPU which i always thought was going to be 90.. maybe i got my info confused/mixed up

ATI is making the GPUs for both Xenon and Revolution so it's obvious why certain fan boys of a certain console are trying to downplay ATI's ability.

Hey if it makes you happy those TFLOPS could emulate anything. ;)

yeah, and seeing as there is no reason to do so [nobody knows if the ps3 will even have a gpu or if it will run in a 'software' type mode that older games used to use, seeing as it is supposed to have all of that power behind it., which, also is not confirmed, or leaked, only speculated up till this point..], it doesn't make any sense to do so..

Everything will be clear soon. Lets be patient. :)

If all 3 have similar output, i will be disappointed. I certainly expect one of them to, clearly, lead the pack in how we can be immersed in nextgen games goodness. Who wouldnt? after all that have been said and done about pushing a new innovative architecture, designed ground up for next generation enjoyment. ;)

PS3 will have a GPU.

i dont think the power of the next consoles will matter with ps3 or xenon., they'll both be rediculously powerful., the only one i worry about is nintendo, because they like to do dumb stuff just to be different..

only thing that will matter is the games and how well the developers put them together..

Not if it will come out in 2005.

Let's face it - 99% of what has been said on that subject has been this forum's collective wishfull thinking (we're all at fault for that to some extent, not singling out anyone).

100% correct, me included ;)

considering the performance they are able to get out of the current xbox with it's mediocre specs., i have a hard time imagining what will be possible with what they're thinking about.. i don't really care if it's 65m, 90nm, or even 110nm... at the end of the day,. it's a console., so it is a machine with one sole purpose and it will be better than anything currently on the market.. which look damn amazing already [doom3, ut 2k4, painkiller, far cry etc etc., running on 6800 gt or x800 pro]..

thats not even taking into account the leap from 733mhz to 3.5ghz., or 32 to 64bit or that it will have more memory., i'll be happy with whatever., seeing as if it were the specs of a traditional pc., they wouldn't look or run as well.. it's a ton cheaper.,

That was just a rumor. If you see that a 2.5GHz G5 already needs watercooling, I don't think that a three core powerpc (or whatever powerpc design they use now) for a console could reach 3.5GHz in 2005.

For sure! I mean, I was playing Doom 3 hooked up to my tv the other day(2600+,9600p) and it looked feckin great even though it was 640x480. Max Payne 2 looked pretty good too.

When have nintendo ever done "dumb stuff" with a console

Historically Nintendo has always release a console slightly more powerful than the sony one

And how does this translate to "dumb"? The Gamecube is very powerful, pretty reliable and inexpensive to manufacture.
