ATI RV740 review/preview

What are the relative performance drops in each case for turning on MSAA?

Also, I guess it's worth mucking about with forced wide-tent and edge-detect MSAA and super-sampling + MSAA on NVidia.

Well, maybe if you ask Dave nicely he'd do it as a marketing research project to show how the original design philosophy of the RV740 brought power efficiency under load. Translating that back to fodling&home WU's and showing who really has a cure for cancer and the lowest CO2 output.

I've been thinking about doing these measurements and came to conclusion that to do it properly one would need to measure only GFX board power consumption.
CPU, motherboard, memory can skew measurements by a lot.
Maybe we should ask guys from XbitLabs to do it. They already have a test platform ready .

I wonder what idle power it might achieve if properly supported by the driver. Half of GDDR5-RV740 maybe?

RV740 had the same core clock of 750Mhz but used GDDR3 instead?...If 750Mhz is true, this more than competes with the 9600GT I guess. And for the performance you get at 50-70USD (at least what Chiphell's implying), this has the potential to strike big.

Am wondering if they can get the card out that cheaply. Roughly guessing at some prices...GDDR3 ~$1.80 and GDDR5 ~$2.50, x8 gives a saving of around $5. Cheaper board(less layers) maybe $3, less power components(no 6 pin) perhaps $2. That's $10 cost which propagates as approx a $20 saving at retail.

So if RV740 gddr5 is at $90 then could just make $70 for the gddr3 version. Swapping over to regular ddr3 would maybe give them another $5(perhaps more) off the retail price.

That said ATI/AMD really need a strong part below the RV740, Against the RV730 and RV710 nvidia are debuting the GT216 and GT218 perhaps late june or early july and likely will become much more aggressive in that segment.

What's the deal with availability? Seems to be out of stock everywhere. Has anyone heard of AMD stockpiling RV740's for notebooks like Nvidia is supposedly doing for GT21x?

It could be that the part just sells really well. That or 40nm is doomed at TSMC ;)

Ebuyer here in the UK has ~75 and Scan has stock. Overclockers.co.uk seems to have sold out. Dabs doesn't have stock. Definitely looking patchy.

I think there's a valid reason why the 4750 part wasn't launched simultaneously, and it probably has to deal with yields.

But really? People rushing out to buy the 4770 in droves?

Meaning the reverse?
That yields really aren't that bad for RV740?

Though remember, they need to stockpile quite a lot of cards for such a high volume market.

No, I'm just expecting surprise for a really high volume when volume in sub-$100 normally comes at OEM deals and such. Back to school isn't that close to be stockpiling.

The channel waiting for the 4770 and massbuying it when it's released? Now I'm a little hard pressed to believe that, lol.

(I did mean that yields were worse than expected, otherwise the lowend GDDR3 SKU would be doing a lot of crazy damage on the budget side. FFS, they haven't even released the 4770 in the market it'd do the best- China)

Oh, and http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3798488&posted=1#post3798488

Oooo-Wait. TWO power connectors? WHAT

But laptops are already underway, since they lead?

Also, is TSMC constraining supply? Or is production ramping slowly? Does TSMC lose revenue if yields are low or if they go below a threshold?

Yeah, me too.

I do sometimes think that the markets chosen/prioritised for stuff are specifically about marketing/fluffing-up share price. Not just for the funky cool stuff, but also the dog-ends that get hidden in markets that tend not to draw much attention.

That looks like RV770 with butchered memory and butchered clusters. The numbering is hilarious, yet more justification for naming RV740XT as HD4840. This card would then be called HD4820  Then HD4750 would have to end up being called HD4810. But I guess the HDxx70 and 50 naming has some intrinsic value and HDx7xx is supposed to indicate mainstream.

Well Asus just put G105 GPUs in the K (?) series that was supposed to debut together with RV740. I'm not too sure what's happening over there, maybe a revision to A14 needed or such?

As well as yields, there might be other problems in china for amd. There are stories going round about the poor quality of the management for the company there. Kindof of problematic as lots of the sales growth is expected to come from china and india over the next few years while the rest of the world wallows, you would want your top people working there not your "dog-end". ie this thread

Speaking of chiphell, anyone have a comment on this thread. The user hotboy (i think) works for tsmc, cryptic even in chinese, in english:
"BOSS came yesterday, no time to back .... According to reliable information, the two new nuclear is the first leap, it is hardly surprising that children with disabilities some time ago gave birth deformities"
(2x current RV740 for RV870 ????)

"It is not a. Income too low. In fact, very worried about a few days before the children of students with disabilities, will be melted down for sure. After all, the lesson learned, anyway Oh continue to purchase A dual card"
(ie amd having trouble with RV740)

"Looks like there is glue has been no mention of plans, where the middle class may not, and now are too tight-lipped, but also not too many sets of performance .... Anyway, we look forward to better under..."
(...no idea)

"40 technology can be the core of the monsters are doing very small....pull it AMD??? In referring to the next. Gluewater also take a long time, it's technology now, or is very difficult to achievewithin six months of"
(...no idea again, amd problems with next generation of cards perhaps, taking a long time)

"Khan died a few days .... ah serious leakage, a family feels that the only hearsay under casual"
(RV870 or GT215 or GT300???)

LOL! I always knew Wavey would have to slay Khan on his path to success, it was only a matter of time. In all seriousness, machine translation is awful in this case.

I read this as "it's not surprising that derivatives of defective parts are also defective". Of course, that doesn't help make sense of all that jibber jabber.

Beijing recently passed by Love will Tear Us Apart

Joy Division come back to life and touring?

There's nothing in this hotboy thread. There's ANOTHER thread where he comments on how horrendous TSMC Shanghai is, perhaps due to TSMC's more pennywise oriented purchasing of equipment.
