Graphics Company Hires Additional Forces for R600 Product

ATI Technologies is hiring some new engineers for its product code-named R600 that is not even likely to appear on the horizon really soon. The move indicates growing aggressiveness in the graphics processors market as well as the belief of the Markham, Ontario-based company in the further growth of the R&D budget that is indissolubly connected with the firm’s sales.

On Sunday, the 25th of April, 2004, The Inquirer web-site reported about the intention of ATI Technologies to hire a team leader to manage Direct 3D driver component quality at its Marlboro plant in the USA. As part of her or his responsibilities, the manager is expected to serve as the primary point of contact within ATI for component quality problems for the Direct 3D driver for the R600 product, according to the report that cited ATI’s official web-site.

I assume R500 will be the first ATI VPU with SM 3.0, then R600 will bring SM 4.0 - which Xbox 2 will also have, naturally.
 
Perhaps the Xbox2's GPU's differing pedigree might give a hint as to why R500 might possibly be coming out a bit earlier than expected.

If Microsoft is truly dead-set on releasing the console earlier than the other ones, even if only by a matter of months, then an R600 derivative would be in production at an awkward time if ATI were to stay fixed on a 6 month new core, then refresh cycle.

Sigh, it's like it's never a good time to buy new hardware for me. Each successive generation for some reason insists on having a replacement coming down the pipeline. Who'd a thunkit?

With PCI express and the new shader models, one of my personal hoped-for eventualities--that of on GPU collision detection--looks to be very close to reality. Now I guess I have to set my hopes for a fragment processor with the capability of actually generating geometry. Maybe then I can replace my geforce3.

Is this because the R500 will be announced, we'll find it has nothing to do with DXNext which we all expect the X-Box 2 to be based around... or am I just plain wrong? :)
