ATI MSAA/ eDRAM module patent for R500/ Xenon?

Jawed your terminology "resolve a pixel" confused me. The above explaination is correct. I generally think of resolving as being the end of the scene, like with filtering for AA. I now see "resolve a pixel" meant the fragment is written to memory.

Also, even with unified shaders the graphics pipeline is first in first out. Pixel fragments and vertices can just be reordered along the way. They must still be written to memory in order or blending will not work.
