Are Sony devs aiming higher?

Ya can we kill this divisive stuff? There's so many impressive looking titles coming out on both platforms. Im a lot more worried about my wallet at this point. :)

Whats really encouraging about Sony's TGS to me is just how mature the software seems for 1st generation titles. Despite the steep learning curve developers are already cranking out some very promising stuff.

This is what I thought the original topic was about. Sorry to compare with other consoles, but if you take your fanboi glasses off, I think anyone would agree that SONY's launch software is the most promising, and are offering some really technically impressive titles. How they play is another story, but just from eye candy POV, they're awesome (not all, but you know the ones I'm referring to). I mean, for 1st gen games, they can hold their own up to 2nd gen games found elsewhere.

Hey, it's one man's opinion/observation...put the guns away! ;)

Why yes, I thought this was common knowledge - he went on to create his own studio, Ready at Dawn.
Sorry, but I believe that was Didier Malenfant.. not Andy Gavin (although I'm pretty sure he's not at ND now either).

Cheers,
Dean

Good point - but I believe Marco was not part of the team prior to HS though. Not to say the rest of the team contributed nothing but I think he was instrumental in Nao32;) But then great ideas are born everyday by lots of smart people. Some just blossom more than others for lots of different reasons. Agreed on the rest of your post as well wrt competing against ps3.
At this point I feel guilty just cause I write on this forum while a lot of other ppl that have contributed or are still contributing to HS don't write here and automatically it seems they do not exist.
Speaking of Heavenly Sword's engine (since that's the part I know better) it's crystal clear to me that I have added or modified a few things here or there but 95% of it was created and designed years ago from a group of amazingly talented ppl that took a lot of very good decisions when next gen games were just a dream in game designers' minds.

When I answered this question I even used Google to verify. I actually found some game descriptions just now again supporting this (this French one for instance), BUT ... the gamespot interview has Didier visibly presenting the game as President of Ready at Dawn, and they probably didn't get that wrong. So seems you're right, and I thank you for the correction.

Can we expect to see some detailed information about how this engine works at some point, through some publication or public conference talk? I think it's safe to say that a lot of us are quite interested to learn more about HS...

I'm curious as to where we have seen ANY 2nd gen games...

I think now is good time to resurrect this thread! LBP is another tick in Sony's camp supporting the OPs contention... Persoanlly I want to see something new, amazing, and brilliant for X360. We been waiting on essentially the same games (LO, BD, ME, FM2, Bioshock) for the last nine months or so.. where are the new innovative surprise titles for 360?

e3 ...

Good idea digging up this dusty thread.

As stated in the Virtua Tennis comparison thread, someone from Sega characterized their relationship with the PS3 as "hitching their wagon to Sony" on a 1up podcast. One of the reasons with the similarity betweeen RSX and the lindbergh board but also becuase they do feel Sony is still in a dominant position regardless of the MS head start. So yeah wrt Sega, i think when given the choice the PS3 gets the big piece of chicken.

This was a good one to reflect on now that a good bit of time has passed. :devilish:

Well, this is why I think they need to swallow hard and do what they need to do on price. That kind of developer mindshare is a huge advantage. Lose that and you've hurt not just PS3, but the Playstation brand going forward.

Agreed.

@ Butta: Perhaps a new thread titled "Are Sony devs aiming Later?"

Well they arguably have the best looking console game currently available in Gears, what more are you looking for?

Mass Effect is coming soon, I can't think of any game on any platform that is aiming higher than that.

I'm playing Crackdown right now and it has some really amazing stuff. Hopefully other sandbox games (Mercs 2, Assassin's Creed) will push the system as hard.:)
As of MS developers not aiming high, I don't agree with this one. IMO their games are really ambitious.

I'm genuinly interested, what has impressed you more in that game?

Draw distance, physics, your character feels like a helicopter at times, throwing things from scyscrapers and seeing how they react with other things hundreds meters away... Maybe it's not that impressive by itself, but I never experienced such things in videogames. You don't feel it until you play the game (at least I wasn't impressed by gameplay videos)

Agreed 100%

This game is a true oddball in that regard. I saw the videos and thought "ok ... so what? GTA clone with so so graphics and a guy kicking cars, throwing things, etc ..."

The demo upped my interest but the full game did the trick.

Getting a player immersed in the story (as crappy or shallow as it is) from the get-go is key.

yes please... anyone that's truly curious about what's going on with the 360 (besides games with just "good art" ;)) please play Crackdown for a couple of hours on a nice HDTV with a character who is built up to 3 stars+ and someone giving you pointers on the fun ways to interact with the environment (preferably online co-op).

It certainly is not indicative that it can only be done on the 360, just that it is doing some things that may surprise some people as to what they expect the 360 actually does in games.

here's some cool things it does from a technical standpoint but the interaction with the environment is the most fun. :)
