And now there is R580

I really doubt that R500 chip costs 500 $ to produce :devilish:

Chips are cheap. The price of the gfx card doesn't in any way resemble chip prices.

I agree but do you think that the R500 will be on a card in the X-box case? If no, cost of the gpu part should be way lower no ?

I dont understand. If it is so much cheaper to put the chip on the same board with the CPU whynot somebody produces a simple PC which contains all the components on the same board together with a behemoth of a graphic chip (e.g R520) and sell it for 399$.

Or maybe the mainboards could contain on board X800 XT platinums for only a small price premium, because the chips are simply cheap.

X-box won't need to do 16x12 4xaa at acceptable fps, will it? I can't see R520 being overdesigned just for funsies.

Xbox2's native res will be 1280x720p, won't it? With that high a res, you'd think they'd anticipate some AA usage. But, yeah, no doubt PC parts are equipped for higher res and filtering (AA/AF).

First, you wouldn't be able to upgrade it. Bad for sales, since that would be aimed at enthusiasts, which WILL want to upgrade every 6 months or so.

Second, there are many issues concerning power, layout, electrical interferances, thermics etc. It's simply too complicated for being a viable solution. Could be done, but noone will do it IMHO (no money to be made there).

More like the Law of Retailer Markup and "if they buy it for $400 now, let's sell the next generation for $450" :?

Also Phoenix, MS can afford to lose a bit on the hardware if it can recoup on the software royalties and its huge games like Halo.

It's not that an X850 card costs an obscene amount more to manufacture than the X850 itself, it's that consumers will pay far more for a graphics card than Microsoft will for the chip. The only reason ATI charge $500 for a top end card is because we're willing to pony up the dollars.

Also remember the high speed memory is the most expensive thing on the video card, much more so than the GPU chip itself. Of course a 512MB video card is going to be more expensive than a Xenon console with ~256MB of memory.

xenon XGPU will probably be (much) faster for some things, and may be slower for others.

It's a console GPU, and as such will likely be optimized for console uses.

Just like how the GS in PS2 is (much) faster than GF4 for some things, and (much) slower for others.

There's already something like that, it's called a "console."

We have integrated graphics on motherboards today, so... sounds like a good idea to me. I've been wondering that for years.

Xbox2 will have 512mb.

Are you sure you know what you're talking about?

text sony doesn't have to go with a umd set up. They can have the cell chip with its own ram and then have the nvidia gpu acess its own pool of ram too.

PS3 also uses XDR Rambus RAM. which is quite expensive!

512mb is just too expensive..we're talking about doubling the RAM price for millions of units

Make up your mind.

EDIT: Obviously I didn't read properly, and what you're saying is XBOX2 will have 512Mb but PS3 won't. My apologies for jumping on you.

I do hope that Xenon has 512 MB and 50 to 60 GB/sec bandwidth

22.4 GB/sec
(in the Xenon System Diagram and Leaked Document just does not seem like anywhere near enough) even factoring in the higher-bandwidth eDRAM on R500.
