This might be slightly out of place to post this here but I just watched a lecture on this. It's an improvement on current binary interferometric display (mirasol) with single-pixel generation of every color in the RGB space:

Requires more control circuitry and likely more power, but it's still orders of magnitude lower than active displays.

Was the lecture on-line? Mirasol has been talking about generating a higher quality color display and this looks like a possible path.
