That would explode the internet, regardless of how it performs :runaway:

    GPUs falling, Riot on internets,

Baby this time there's no retreat, there's no sub-render

nVidia rising, ultrashadow from the past,
feeding the flames, the fire on the edge of Fury

    All frametime,
running in and out of time,
hear the ticking of the core clocks down tonight

Go we need some, Go we need some
4K! if we're gonna make it like a true survivor
We need some 4K! if we wanna take our love away from here
We need a - living passion, to believe in, burning RAM and a brand new bandwidth

4K! if we're gonna make it like a true survivor

    Calling from the ashes
    ATi rise again
    Fighting for devs, for games,
For all that we believe in

Go we need some, Go we need some
4K! if we're gonna make it like a true survivor
We need some 4K! if we wanna take our love away from here
We need a - living passion, to believe in, burning RAM and a brand new bandwidth
4K! if we're gonna make it like a true survivor

    HBM stands alone
When all is set and done
The DDRs are falling one by one

    All frametime,
running in and out of time,
hear the ticking of the core clocks down tonight

Go we need some, Go we need some
    4KKKKKKKKKKK!
    4K!

4K! if we're gonna make it like a true survivor
We need some 4K! if we wanna take our love away from here
We need a - living passion, to believe in, burning RAM and a brand new bandwidth
4K! if we gonna make it like a true survivor

    true survivor...

Damn it, I was really hoping they'd get the word "Rage" in there somewhere too. :(

  5. I'm all for dropping "Radeon" and bringing back "Rage".

Besides, the X in "Fury X" makes it look like they couldn't figure out anything better than to copy nVidia Titan's suffixes.

And for nVidia to go back to fabulous Riva name! nVidia Riva GTX XZ (you can add arbitrary number there as well!).

Yeah, just the "X" implies either "10" or "what?" to me. Another letter wouldn't have hurt, having an XL and LE or something easy to distinguish performance by.

I think Unwinder might go after them if they tried that, and I'd be rooting for him!

eXtreme? The Z is put there to sound as S, meaning the plural.

Of course, that Z and X can be random letters meaning anything different.

  13. From those news, it appears the R390 is a full Hawaii and not a cut-down version like the R290.
The only difference is in the clocks: 1060MHz core and for the 390 and 1100MHz for the 390X.
40MHz for a rumored $50 price difference? Maybe there's a lot more to see in the Turbo clocks..

EDIT: As for the differences in power consumption, perhaps that's coming from a new PCB and different GDDR5 chips.
We've seen PCB revisions carrying better quality components bringing up drastic differences in power consumption and attainable clocks before. It's very common on 3rd party OEM flagship products.
Check this Gigabyte G1 980 Ti card. A 15-20% factory overclock that increases power consumption in just 3%.

Hasn't it been almost 2 years since the 290x launched ? Perhaps respins and so much time getting tweaked allowed them to get the tdp down that much

That would probably manifest as a decline in power consumption among the 290 lines as well.
That level of improvement would be very significant for a mere tweak, unless something was very off at the characterization or power-management level. The 7970 to 7970 GHz is an example of a GPU tweak, but the improvement didn't seem to match that kind of power reduction. The Jaguar to Puma transition introduced actual turbo and better power management, but that was a case of the implementation being substantially broken in Jaguar.

I thought 290X was 250W; that would be an improvement.

If it's a rebrand, they wouldn't have stopped. If they did due to glut, they might not have started making "390" chips.
There's no real history of a drop that significant in a matter of a few months, particularly with years of opportunity going by prior to those last months for improvement, unless something was significantly broken. The 290s don't seem to be out of line with other GCN cards, so if something did change, it seems like it would take more than a respin to do it.

  19. So could the Hawaii 290 -> Grenada 390 transition be similar to Jaguar -> Puma?

BTW, the picture of the R7 370 shows a connector for a Crossfire bridge, meaning this is definitely the (very, very) old Pitcairn.

The Jaguar to Puma transition included a foundry change and a fix to broken turbo functionality.
Hawaii does not appear to be that broken, and I have not seen much discussion about a foundry change.
