AMD Mantle API [updating]

I honestly haven't played through the whole game. Maybe they switch it at some point?
Still no public docs? WTH.
I think Sony would be smart to allow Mantle API to run on PS4. Or even pay for access if its necessary. If they did that, Mantle could become the lead platform for more games As it stands DX is probably lead platform for most devs right? If they fail to sign up now MS might create some exclusive deal with AMD and lock Sony out of using Mantle. This may have already taken place if there is any truth to the DX12+Mantle deal.
Not really... I think DX12 is more like the actual version of DX who run on PS4 and Xbox one .. ( with maybe more PC computing features added who are not in the actual "DX console version") .
Now..
- Most features used in DX11 are made by AMD
- mantle use the same features level of DX11 (( no difference or anything lost in BF4 and Thief as example in term of graphic features ) ( they dont violate any licence by use all thoses features as they have for the most developp them or collaborate to include them in DX and have a total control on them ( legally ), hence why i was saying you have no difference in graphics by using Mantle ( you have not features retired as you dont use DX when using Mantle )
- Consoles DirectX API are low level API, as AMD is bringing in both case the x86 gpu and CPU.. the DirectX API is close to GCN. Mantle is close to GCN obviously ...
Saying that Dx12 is "just " DX11+Mantle look more like a metaphore for me. Basically it is something close to Mantle, But based on DirectX ... ( i will not be surprised that many codes are looking severally like Mantle, just due to the fact thoses codes allready exist in the DirectX version for consoles like the PS4 and Xboxone who have been developped on GCN architecture anyway )..
But i will not be so much surprised that MS do a deal with AMD for it.. AMD, DirectX and MS is a long story of collaboration...... ( I absolutely dont believe this is the case.. but looking the history, work of AMD for DirectX .. this is not completely impossible )

Err, PS4 doesn't run any type of DX
For what i know it is based on DX .. different but based on DX ( at least compatibl, the source codes are easely the same ) . But i had hesitate to put the PS4 in the list.. as really i have not watch more what was inside their API ..
The playstation's shader language, at least the higher-level one, was described in 2013 as being similar to HLSL, and extra steps were taken to make porting from HLSL simpler.
That's not the same as being the same as a whole API, and the playstation language exposes more lower-level detail.
Mantle supports HLSL, and a similar goal of quick porting through HLSL is present. Mantle goes a step further from being similar to just being able to use it.
So we have a lot of interfaces that are roughly in the same neighborhood already.

You mean it looks like the D3D API perhaps, but based on D3D sounds extremely wrong...
There are OpenGL look alike API in a few consoles out there for sure, but AFAIK the PS4 API is akin to its PS3 counterpart. (That said my informations regarding the PS4 aren't first-hand.)

Not a chance. Direct3D 12 will be a new version of Direct3D, not some existing API in disguise. BTW Mantle is not based on Direct3D in any way, the only commonality is HLSL.
It might be a way of limiting the number of users and thus the amount of people to support. I assume it will open up when out of beta.
CryEngine support for Mantle was assumed to be coming since Star Citizen was already announced for Mantle.

A few important points to make:
1. Discussions with Microsoft started more than 4 years ago. Nvidia worked with the DirectX team to deliver a working implementation for the past year. AMD and Intel were in talks as well. So in fact no relation to the Mantle announcement at all.
2. They are targeting December 2015 game releases, which means Windows 9/9.1 exclusive.
3. AMD speaker mentions [post=1832198]a new driver model[/post], but no specifics are given.
4. Apparently based around feature levels 11_0 and 11_1, but higher feature levels (12_x) are in consideration.
5. Less abstraction allows some hardware features not possible in D3D11.
More details will probably emerge at //build 2014.
