A couple of PS3 tidbits

From a Famitsu interview with Masatsuka Saeki of SCE:

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/654/654390p1.html

The only bit of real news is this:

Originally, SCE was scheduled to hold a Japanese event in February that would give players a chance to play PS3 games, but Saeki reveals that SCE now has something else planned in place of this event -- something that will surprise gamers but is currently being kept a secret.

Also:

Apparently, Sony could have shown playable software, but it decided that since this was the first time the PS3 was going to be shown on Japanese soil, it would be best to show only video footage first. Pressed further by the magazine, Saeki states that SCE wanted general users to feel the same impact that industry members felt upon seeing the E3 trailer footage for the system, and thus opted for trailer footage only

In particular, he doesn't commit to a price for the system, instead stating that price is something that Sony will be arguing over internally until just before the system's launch.

Wonder what they're going to do instead of the Feb event?

Um, it sounds to me like that's a bit of a "cover" for not having enough playable software to display. Likely they will push this event to another later date. Probably something before E3.

Something that'll shock gamers...

A specs downgrade!

I joke. One surprise would be the batarang being final. Another is that...

Hmmm... Err...

Has anyone thought of online? Other innovative add-ons, e.g. Eyetoy? :)

Fingers crossed for something to shock us...

Oh yeah... The RSX! It hasn't been taped out yet. Something's going down... :D

It didn't cross my mind at all intially, but someone proposed on another board that it could be a launch that they're replacing it with ;) I think that's doubtful..but perhaps a roadshow? Or demo kiosks rolled out widely to stores? I'm not sure how surprising those would be though.

edit - I don't think it'd be simply an "information release" about online, or specs, or RSX or whatever. That'd hardly be a replacement for an opportunity for the public to go hands-on with the system.

Just this...

Press Release

"Sony PlayStation Online delivers one of the hottest online gaming environments on the market today...Sony recognizes that the online world is also full of challenges, and crowded with people at all age ranges and personal beliefs."

"Subscribers within Sony PlayStation's Online arena are open to language and content that may not be suitable for all players. To combat the risk of exposing customers to offensive language and content, the company turned to Teragram to build a "vulgarity filter." Whether playing SOCOM III, Ratchet and Clank...Sony wants to ensure that all players have a fun, but also appropriate, gaming experience."

"Players who subscribe to PlayStation Online must enroll and log-in when playing. These players then have a forum to chat and instant message one another. At these critical stages of open communication, offensive language and slang could be used. To prevent this Sony runs Teragram's vulgarity software on each of its thousands of servers around the world. Teragram's technology can monitor and filter out offensive content in microseconds, enforcing a clean yet extremely fast user experience..."

"...Sony required a technology that could be as flexible as the cultural issues of the players on the platforms. Teragram's multilingual dictionaries offer the scaleability and flexibility needed by Sony to continually update and add slang words to its servers."

man it just makes you wonder what is it gonna be! We could guess and guess but probally miss like most guys on teamxbox did with that origin thing.

Nice. They should just create a countdown. Like the 360 and (now) the PSP is doing. Makes it more dynamic. Also...its just another annoying "shocker" date. Yet...I don't doubt Sony would show something big...E3 and TGS alone where crazy.

2 tickets to attend an obscure show in tokyo maybe :D

LOL. I still can't believe Origin turned out to be a ticket dispenser. I thought it was going to be something huge or monumental. Also....its kinda not cool to go to a show..play the 360 when its only a month and some change away from release....ehh...atleast you can say that you touched it before your friends...

If I won I'd play the games and when asked, say 'nyah, PlayStation 3's better' just to really p*** Microsoft off! :devilish:

It would surprise gamers if they stuck with videos and graph-laden Powerpoint presentations. :p
I have a better idea. They could start an international scavenger hunt to put ilovebees and ourcolony to shame.
That would be surprising.

Hmmmm.... wonder what Sony has up their sleeve. I would never leave Sony out. Maybe they are going to throw in a Eyetoy included? I mean it has to be something big right? Maybe ahh I don't know.

Interesting. This was quoted from the last PS Meeting.

Sony Computer Entertainment leader Ken Kutaragi revealed Thursday afternoon his company's plans to hold a "PlayStation Conference" in Japan in February of 2006. Kutaragi stated that this conference was to be held on the "eve" of the PlayStation 3 launch.

Sounds a bit suspect. A long shot, but maybe they've replaced the PS meeting in Feb, with CES in Jan and actually launching in Feb. Wishful thinking i know

The included EyeToy as standard was mention...goodness, a year ago? If one doesn't come as standard I'll be surprised and disappointed.

As for something big, Origen should remind us all of how 'big' these things can be!
