A bit of NV30 speculation from Xbit...

They couldn't do any worse than GeForce! That has to be the worst name they could have come up with.

Actually the name GeForce was the result of a naming contest nVidia sponsored. The wanted something new after TNT. They annouced who won, but that was a long time ago. Imagine that as your claim to fame.

I really hope they call it Rampage. I am sure that would cause quite a stir.

Does any else think the name Rampage is ideal for a new gen video card? They couldn't do any worse than GeForce! That has to be the worst name they could have come up with.

I actually agree, they should call it Rampage. Not because it's based on the out-of-date 3DFX tech but because it's a cool name, and it would gain attention from all the 3DFX fanboys (who would claim it was based on 3DFX's crap regardless of what the truth is) and also it would just gather attention in general from among the small minority in the know (generally the same audience who buys the over priced high end anyway, so it would be effective). ;)

If they called it Rampage, they would invoke the curse of 3dfx upon their little souls and doom themselves to burn in eternal ignominy.

After all, being the market leader and then losing market share to the competitor's high-end product while the Rampage is delayed again and again... does not bode well for said market leader.

That explains it. Still, there is no excuse for that name, absolutely none.

Yep. Look at it this way... most of the ex 3dfx zealots are now FanATIcs, so by calling it Rampage, they might just get a few to switch. Personally, I just think its a good friggin name.

I heard a rumor that they might name it Omen. I wonder who at Nvidia came up with that. I also agree that Rampage would be a great name. So many former workers at 3dfx are now at ATI? Hmmm.... I bet they wish they could use some of their former tech which Nvidia has all the patents to.

Like "22-bit" color? Or 256x256 textures?

Sorry couldn't help myself :)

Right. The outdated tech you mean?
Or do you assume that no other company had thech even close to 3dfx's, to the degree that even when it is 2+ years late, its still better than say, ATI's current tech?
yeah right.

I always thought that Rampage was named after ATI's Rage serious of chips but some how Nvidia got in between the two companies.

I think he should have mentioned something to the effect of bandwidth free Multisampling on Fear (if he should have heard anything of the design anyway).

Jonathan,

I wouldn´t underestimate ATI that easily, nor the ArtX team (and all the patents that came along with the ArtX acquisition). In fact at the moment they managed to have more advanced products in EVERY market segment, than the entire competition.

Just a note. nVidia bought 3dFX's intellectual property in the end. Any direct transfer of copyrighted tech via employee's to ATI could find ATI in major legal action. That's why nVidia bought 3dFX, not just let them die. They bought all the tech.

The motivation of the workers, that's another story. And companies often don't take patents because that tell's the competion what they did.

Just to qualify what I said: 3DFX tech is outdated because they went out of business 2+ years ago now. ;)

That´s irrelevant though as to what was under research or advanced development at the time of the buyout. If there has been anything used, then definitely not from what was finalized (or almost finalized) back then.

Does any of you think that at the beginning of 2001, ATI or NVIDIA had "only" NV20 or R200 under development?

Jeez, of course everyone knows it means There aint no such thing as a free lunch. Just kidding. Just saw the answer to that in another thread. :p

Blargh! :-?

Outdated?!? You have got to be joking. Just before their demise, 3dfx had some of the most advanced 3d tech in the industry. They just didn't have the money to implement it. GigaPixel tech probably would have dominated the market if they hadn't been bought out by 3dfx. Oh, and by the way, Nvidia began early development on NV30 shortly after the buyout of 3dfx, so they have had quite some time take advantage of the "outdated" 3dfx tech. [/quote]
