why didnt they put in a open dvd drive (like the ps2's) ?

Heh...no...you're probably just not old enough to know what a "full height" device is. The standard 5 1/4 inch drive bays on today's PCs are "half-height" bays.
Oh silly me. I forgot the special console magic that allows their chips to run far far cooler than PC chips using the same technologies, same manufacturing processes, and coming from the same manufacturers.
He is right, the X360 will run cool, MS said so...
Gotta agree though that it looks like they could have made the box smaller if they had used a slim DVD drive (slot loading or the rail ones) as there seems to be a lot of dead space inside the box. Heat would likey be a problem but a better venting system could likely have been designed (look at the Mini-mac, its tiny and yet doesn't really overheat).
